how many times do I have to run this through your brains the PS3 will be a 10 year console. 150 million sold. With blu-ray, the Cell, bluetooth, rumble, EDGE development tools, free online, PSN, and Firmware update 3.41, the PS3 will be a viable console well past 2016. Especially when the Cell is unlocked more with the EDGE development tools. If that is not potential I don't know what is.Fart_StormSo then you aren;t going to buy Sony's next console when it comes out in 6 years then? The reason why they say it has a 10 year life span is a marketing ploy. They know as well as you do that the majority of PS3 users will purchase their next console when it comes out within 1 year. Stop being brainwashed.

You had best believe that I will: join us.
I hoped things would be like previous gens , and beleive me m8 . I would join you asap , even if price is too high for me. (450 euros = 650$ or more) just for 40gb. But i dont see many exciting things ... Really.. Not to say im upseting every single time... Last was FF13... Whats next?... I hope no Tekken6 because then , except GoW3 i dont see why to buy a PS3 .. Oh well , ill wait a little longer ( ive said that the last 2 years though). Lets see what will happen.

10 years would be nice, but if a new Xbox comes out before that of course people are just going to jump ship. And then there will be another issue with being a late start on the next-gens and continue the cycle. I can't imagine the PS3 being able to compete with a new Xbox hardware wise.
Sorry just to many eggs in one basket for me and I own a PS3.
No but future firmware updates will allow the further optimization of the Cell, which will make it easier to get more juice out of the Cell (such as using more SPEs, etc). Imagine what the firmware updates will be like in 2016? Thus, the updates will allow workarounds from the RAM issue.

So you think a firmware up date will allow them to magically work around the lack of ram!

Why would SOny lie to shareholders? That's illegal.
I wouldnt say it is a lie but that doesnt mean that they are correct on how they view the future. Right now both the PS3 and 360 are dead even in hardware. You are just sold on the cell like it is years ahead of all technology when in reality it isnt. Everything Sony has dished out has been lies and more lies from the first unvieling of the PS3 till today. Is it a bad console? No but they havent showed anything that is beyond the 360. You can see it in front of your eyes every day and still you dont believe it. Ask yourself, If the cell is so might then why havent first party games blown everybody away? If the PC is producing better graphics than the PS3 today then by 2011 the PS3 will be old news by then. As much as you talk you dont have the slightest clue about how much power is being used by either console and neither do I. Just enjoy your games. For me I have a 360 and this will be my last console since I am losing all interest in gaming.

I must simply laugh at this topic.
Okay, Ps3 to be a viable console in 2016 is pretty much as stupid as statements come. That is 7 years from now. Likely at LEAST 3 years into Xbox 720's lifecycle. Let's not even get into what PC graphics will look like by then.
To say that the PS3 with its puny 512MB of RAM, and already now semi-outdated GPU, will be able to keep up by then is, well, you get it. . .
There is as pointed out by others far more to a console (and a computer) than the CPU. "The power of the CELL", is a myth that needs to die.
1. The Cell wont save the graphics in 7 years, heck it wont save the graphics in 4 years. Plainly because it doesn't do graphics at all. And to sacrifice CPU power to render graphics is dumb, especially in the future when the games get even heavier on AI and physics.
2. New tools might make the lives of the devs easier and slightly touch up the results. But to believe that firmware updates will give the PS3 the ability to make up its shortage of RAM in 7 years time is not only far fetched but pure stupidity.
Yes paying for PS3 is paying for potential. But paying for a PS3 is mostly paying for the misstakes of an arrogant company that had too complicated visions about how to shape a console.

I can't imagine even the most savvy Sony exec. being able to convince shareholders that releasing the PS4 2-3 years after the next MS console is a viable option. If he/she can convince shareholders, they clearly have the power to turn people into zombies, and should be studied in a lab for the benefit of humankind.
Ten years? The power of the cell? A lot of people are really buying into Sony's marketing.
MS will probably release a new console in 3 or 4 years and it will most likely run circles around the PS3 since it'll be using much more advanced hardware (no the cell is not 5 or 6 years ahead of its time). The PS3 is far from being the PS2 at this point. The PS2 lasted so long because it had a great library of games - in that respect it was one of the greatest consoles of all time. The PS3 has far from proved itself thus far. Personally I don't think it has the legs to make it ten years. I bet Sony backs down and releases a new console earlier than that to stay competitive.
As someone said the PC is already producing better graphics than the PS3 - the next XBox will most like be better than what today's PCs are producing so in 2011 or 2012 the PS3 is probably going to be looking extremely dated.
Crysis is also coming out on the 360. the 360's graphics are just as good or better than ps3.

Right..... answer this truthfully - would you play games now on a PC you built in the year 1998? How about one from 2000?
Didn't think so.
Yes. I actually played Zelda OOT a couple months ago. Every once in a while I pull out the old Rainbow Six games. I even play Tenchu Stealth Assasins sometimes. They are still fun. In 2016, there won't be nearly a big a difference graphically with now as there is between now and 1998. Crysis graphics are great, but are they really that much better than motorstorm or uncharted? The difference is not THAT great. And look for Crysis (or at least Crysis graphics) coming out on PS3 in a couple year when the Cell is further unlocked.
Excuse the hell outta me? I'm paying for "potential"? Maybe they should have told us 2006 early adopters that we wouldn't see a library meaningful enough until 2010. Maybe we would have rethought our damn investment.
We don't pay for potential in consoles. We pay for immediate RESULTS. We buy high-tech PC GPUs and Physics cards when we want to pay for potential...a hoped use down the line. But that's not what the console market is or has ever been.
Sony seems to have lost its way and are still doing damage control trying to keep the ship from sinking.

I saw that too and that is pretty freaky. That is just way to realistic. Sony has gone very low with this potential scheme. Lets not forget that they still have a huge loan to pay off for this PS3. If there is potential in the PS3, it is not in games but more in the set top box area.
So the ps3 is no good right now?TheDarkDisciple
or yesterday or tomorrow or ever. it's a blu-ray player with gaming capabilities.
in order words, according to sony, it has the "potential" to play games, but it's better as a blu-ray player.
When the ps3 potential is finally out there the new Xbox will destroy itEnglandfc1966
Game on.
PS3: join us.
This kinda reminds me of the show I was watching on the History Channel last night about Cult Leaders. These Cult leaders were promising so much to their followers and the promise for eternal life is coming. Some of these Cult leaders even set a date for the second coming, but when that date came nothing happened or something bad happened. And I believe this is why most find "paying for potential" hard to swallow.
And then you have a hand full saying "I'm paying for the games that's out now", but what they have now are a bunch of inferior multiplats, games not AAAE caliber, and only one perfect 10 highlight of it's 1.5 life cycle. While the competition that came out the same time outsold it double the amount and they have double the quality of games. And the other competiton that cam out a year earlier continues to lead with the best games. Games matter the most in a gaming console war.
The same message have been said over and over since the beginning, that the PS3 is the best blu ray player while the gaming aspect has potential.
This is a risky strategy for Sony.
I think the technology is pretty much in an experimental stage, we can't be sure that the PS3 is future-proof. Plus, we don't know how fast technology would improve by then.
There is a possibility that all next generation consoles would surpass the PS3 and when that happens, their 10 year lifecycle plan for the PS3 are down in the drain.

No, it wont be the same at all. When the power of the Cell is further revealed (with tools like EDGE, firmware update, etc), look at PS3 graphics being only slightly downgraded from XBOX 720 graphics in 2016. Around the difference between the PS2 and XBOX 1 difference.
LoL what planet are you on? it dont matter how much they develop for the CELL- its a watered-down CPU based on 2005 technology. not to mention the ageing GPU & only 512MB RAM. the next gen consoles will be light-years ahead!
