I think 3rd partys are going to support sony a bit more after the price cut. I mean isnt it a coincidence that Capcom announced the PS3 version of Lost Planet the same week Sony announced the 80GB price cut and 40GB Sku? And we all know Square and Konami have both pressured Sony to reduce the price and they did. Hopefully next gen all consoles will have $400 version right from the start.

Too bad developers are dumb... IBM, Sony, Toshiba, Apple, and Sun Microsystems were able to make very good software for CellBroadband Processors, but it seems that for games no one knows how... wake up devs!iMacBot

yeah, lets blame the devs for sony including a processor that is extremely difficult do develop for and not even made for games and best suited for calculations and things like folding.

Cell was built for super computers, server mainframes and sats so what do you expect when it wasn't originally designed for commercial application and more so for gaming ;) Whilst in theory its a hybird CPU/GPU its yet to be seen in proper application if it can work to its benched standards and its theorized means. Its a brilliant concept but I personally don't think the technology is here (for commercial application) for a CPU/GPU microprocessor to be viable and I think cell is proving that its design still needs to be reworked and partner hardware needs to be on par with it to make it useful.

Software also only gets you so far with hardware limitations anyway, there are bottlenecks in PS3 (even some with 360) that stop it from working to its full potiential, its why you hear all these companies lately talking about work arounds with respect to the platforms they are devin on.

I hope sony doesn't lose support but I hope it loses enough for them to wake there ideas up.

Where is this news from?

Dean's Take on NPD numbers for September
By Dean Takahashi
Friday, October 19th, 2007 at 12:12 am in Dean Takahashi, Dean and Nooch on Gaming, General.

This is clearly going to be the best year in video game history. NPD is predicting $17 billion to $18 billion for the year. The question is whether this is a temporary Halo 3 bubble or it just keeps on getting better from here on out.

To me, the overall growth of the market is what is astounding about the September numbers on video game sales from the NPD Group. Sales in the U.S. were up 74 percent to $1.3 billion in September compared to a year ago. Thanks to that growth, sales year to date are up 47 percent to $9.37 billion compared to a year ago. Surely this is the year the game industry eclipses music sales (if it hasn't already done so)?

Halo 3 explains much of this. But as Nooch notes, there is strength across the board. The Xbox 360 sold 527,800 consoles in the month, while Halo 3 sold 3.3 million copies - $225 million worth - during just 12 days of sales at the end of the month. And remember, that is just a U.S. number for Halo 3 sales. The three Halo SKUs accounted for the top three slots on the top ten list, even the Legendary version that cost an insane $129. The 360 finally outsold the Wii, which sold 501,000 units. Overall, the 360 sales grew 50 percent from August, which was a strong month because of the benefit of the $50 price cut. Moreover, Microsoft noted that Xbox 360 software outsold PS 3 software eight to one and Wii software by four to one.

The Wii is doing surprisingly well given the hype around Halo 3. Anita Frazier, analyst at NPD, noted that Nintendo finally started getting large numbers of consoles into the market. Sony, meanwhile, sold only 119,400 PlayStation 3s and 215,000 PlayStation 2s. Clearly, that's why Sony had to make the move to launch the 40-gigabyte console at $399. That should help put Sony back in the game, but I very much doubt that the former leader of the industry will move out of third place.

One piece of news that came out this week was that Sony pleaded with third-party developers not to abandon its struggling platform. That change in attitude is a marked difference compared to the arrogance of past years. The argument is that the PS 3 will show its strength as developers learn how to make games for it. But developers know they can staff four or five Wii teams with the same number of people it takes to make one PS 3 game. We may have a glut of Wii games soon, but that's not as bad as not having enough games on the PS 3.

The Xbox 360 is going to have a good season with games like "Mass Effect" and "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" still to come. Yes, I know it's also on the PS 3. But clearly it will sell more units on the Xbox 360. Sony managed to crack the top ten finally with a PS 3 title, "Heavenly Sword." But beyond Ratchet & Clank, it's unclear what is going to be a big seller for the company this season. We'll have to see the October numbers, but I expect that the Halo 3 blast radius is still going to have an effect, as will the entry of the $399 PS 3. As Frazier says, content is going to move hardware. With Super Smash Bros. pushing out, Microsoft looks like it has some of the strongest games yet to come in the season. Nintendo still has Super Mario Galaxy, and Sony will have to cross its fingers on Ratchet

It's sad, because you need good game to get PS3 sales, and PS3 sales to get good games. Hopefully MGS4 and Killzone 2, LBP and such wil be able to pull this console out of its lump in the spring.

If devs only tried to get the PS3 versions running smoothly, then they'd sell a lot better...

I think once third party companies realize how good a game can be once time and effort is put into it (i.e. MGS4, FFXIII) that they'll put more faith in the system and start to put more effort which eventually will teach them out to make shortcuts when developing for the system. Devs seem to be getting lazy lately and just make games for 360 because they're easy but I'll take some AAAs that take a year or two to make than some lame ass games that are made in 8-12 months.

LOl this thread is just silly. Number one, the post in nothing more then a rumor with just as much evidence. As for Sony begging for 3rd party support thats even more laughable. People dont realize that the 360 is ONLY around 5-6 million units ahead of the PS3. Right now it may sound like alot because you have one with 12 milllion and the other with 6 million but what do you think will happen in a year and half when at most the 360 is 26 million and the PS3 is around 20 million. Nothing, 3rd party companies arent going anwhere because porting games cost very little and making games for more consoles makes devs more money.

I mean we just came from a gen. where the PS2 had an 80 million lead over the Xbox and STILL the PS2 and Xbox shared most of the PS2s 3rd party support. If the Xbox managed to get tons of games from Ubisoft, Capcom, Edios, EA, etc.. at 80 million units less then its direct competition, WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD THE PS3 LOSE SUPPORT BEING ONLY 5-6 million short of its direct competition. Not to mention the PS3 is the only powerful console that sells in Japan and in many places in Europe. 3rd party support is going nowhere because there is just too much money to be made off the PS3 and it will only get better for 3rd party devs with time.

Even discounting whether or not it's rumor the bigger problem still remains the lack of game sales, why would they put much effort into a port that won't sell well?

Why develop an expensive new ip that won't sell?

I guess the next test is Uncharted, will it sell well enough to justify ND's expense to make it?

Cows are delusional underlings.

It is not the developer's fault that it takes more effort and resource to make a game on the ps3 because of the cell and memory complexity. It is not the developer's fault that their games are selling poorly when they release it for ps3.

Th fact of the matteris most cows are cheap. They just don't buy enough software to encourage developers to invest on the ps3. Xbox 360 and wii games are cheaper to develope on and the developers have higher success of selling their games on these systems than ps3.

Cows are cheap and if they don't want their console to fail they should buy all the ps3 overhyped inferior mediocre games like liar, forelore, madden 08, skate, heavenly sword, ninja gaiden sigma and other third party title.

If the 40gb doesn't make an immediate impact it will spell doom for the ps3. Sony cows you had your run but money and games is more important than loyalty.

It doesn't matter how much units the console is behind. The developers are more interest in the software sales.

Ps3 has horrible attach rate andit ishighrisk/low reward developing games for ps3 than the wii or xbox 360.

It all comes down to busniess and not fanboy loyalty blindness.

It serves them right for betraying so many loyal fans like me. I have moved on to a more reasonable console in xbox 360. That is where all the games are at.

... umm Sony cant sell a ps3 cause it's peaking to its Shipment. Isnt ps3 at like 5.75 right now and Sony Shipped 6 mil.Hitamaru-homia

were'nt they supposed to have shipped 6 million consoles by last march? umm yea. did they? umm, no. so basically it took them 11 months to ship what they were suppose to in 4 months. that's not good sony. besides, it's not that sony doesn't want to ship and sell more ps3's, it's that nobody wants to buy one.

Doesn't all consoles beg for support?

And how much did skate sell on xbox 360? Because if I recall it sold 80,000

microsoft is giving money away to make games. sony is starting a new ipo for 3 billion to make games.

stake sold 235k copies vs 65k on the ps3

how many ps3 are their and how many 360's are their. thats commin sence. which one will outsell the other. like how more copies of manhunt 2 will probably be on the ps2.

3rd party support is going nowhere because there is just too much money to be made off the PS3 and it will only get better for 3rd party devs with time.

and btw microsoft gaming division has never made a profit (this quarter may be there first and looks very promosing for them) and nintendo has made a continues profit for 20 years (since the famicom was released or NES depending on your americanism)

"One piece of news that came out this week was that Sony pleaded with third-party developers not to abandon its struggling platform. That change in attitude is a marked difference compared to the arrogance of past years."

 Poor, poor Cows.

Koalakommander

wow just ouch! Looks like it is going to be a long and painfull console generation for Sony.

When the $400 beast lands with FF13, MGS4, and GT5 -- The only people dissapointed in PS3 will be the people on SW.

Thank God they only make up 0.0001% of the gaming population...

Well so far the people most dissapointed have been the general public. The $400 'beast' will 'land' with none of the games mentioned above and so i really fail to see how that is going to help Sony.

What Sony needs to worry about are people like me, who influence friends buying decisions, owning a PS3 but finding little to be excited about and recommending the 360 instead. I am justone person but I am part of a larger demographic that is turning away from Sony and that is what will kill them. 3 of my friends now own 360's instead of PS3's as I am the early adopter in the group and know it is the console we'll have most fun with.

Why it will lose support is because of something called momentum. If it sells badly now, game makers will wait until it sells better later before investing in it. If there arefew games, a high price, better competitionor whatever other factor stopping it from selling then the viscious cycle continues:

Poor sales = Lower developer investment = Worse sales = Fewer new games in development = Less sales = Sloppy quick buck ports = Lower sales = Console demise.

This is how it has always been and do not think because they sold 120mill before that they will even sell 30 mill this gen.

You know what? This is really starting to remind me of the Saturn days. Only Sony was actually convincing devs not to dev on the Saturn at all. It was looked at as a deving nightmare due to its "Duel Core Styled" technology and "Lack of Tech Support" which really translated into shoddy ports if it got one at all. Most if not all the multiplats shared by the saturn and the PSX sold more on the Sony machine which just adding more fuel to the flame.

The same can be applied today. The reason Sony is in the pickle that they are in right now is a combination of 4 things.

1. Price - Self Explanatory

2. Dev Environment - The Cell architecture which takes alot of time and money to take advantage of in a time where dev costs are going through the roof.

3. Brand Name Recognition - Relying on the "Playstation" name to instantly propel them to the top spot from the jump.

Last but not least........drum roll please......................

4. Gross underestimation of the Competition - No one on God's green earth can defend this one. Sony clearly underestimated MS and the Ninty BIG TIME. This kinda ties in with number 3 but takes on a life of its own when studied. All they saw was a 100 million+ PS2 userbase that they thought they had eating out of their hands so what do they do? Totally ignore MS and Ninty's strategies until reality started setting in. And it started setting in pretty early for Sony.

They never imagined that the Wii would be doing the hardware numbers that it is currently doing all because of its architecture and the fact that it's by Nintendo. Then they look on over to MS who not only started to snag what once were PS only games but now these shared games are starting to appeal better visually on the 360. Not to mention sell more units. Who in their right mind would have thought that Madden 360 would have outsold the PS3 and PS2 versions? That right there is the tell tale mark of where things are headed.

Sony's only hope now is that the $400 model appeals to enough people between now and the time top tier 3rd party games like MGS4 is supposed to launch or you might wake up to read some disturbing news. This holiday season is CRUCIAL for Sony. Let me repeat that....this holiday season is CRUCIAL for Sony.

Devs and investors alike are going to be watching PS3's hardware performance like a hawk from Oct-Dec. and if things don't look promising (500k - Up/month) for the rest of the year in the NPDs, well let's just say there may be some new years resolutions taking place that could leave the Sony's beloved hype machine high and dry.

I've been on the fence with getting a 360 or a PS3. Been waiting for a great RPG. So it's either Ring of Death or Kill my wallet and dignity for paying so much for a GAMING console. So I don't want to pay for a machine that will most likely melt and have to pay extra for HD playback. I was this close to getting a PS3 but then I heard they Sony lost Capcom's Monser Hunter and rumors of Devs dropping the PS3 for the 360 and now the Wii! Kinda scares me...do you guys think that the PS3 could eventually bow out of the console race and we are left with a $400 shiny blu ray player? Now I am undecided again....PS3 or 360...

and you people really belive this? Its so funny how poeple love to join the band wagon on sony bashing when the consoles been out for only a year. Its pretty pathetic. 360 has what after halo3??? Its such a flawed system(360) which pretty much all of there AAAE games i can play on my PC. But yet you guys love to send in your 3fixme 3 times into the warranty dept. yeah I think Ill stick with my ps3 and i will never buy another 360 again. it just plain sucks. Im enjoying my ps3 games and there plenty of good ones. No not your gamespot worshiping AAAe but real gamers go by there own review on the game and not by what som website says. Pathetic.
