Sony pretty much saved gaming this generation

For one, Sony has followed MS, as I like many here said they would with the PS4, by charging for MP. Two, after the backlash MS got from their policies, NOBODY would have followed them. That's like crediting MS for having a $300 360 at launch instead of charging $600 like Sony was going to do. It makes no sense. And TC, you can only save something that is in danger of dying. Gaming was/is not dying.

I'm just happy they were able to continue to offer some quality gaming experiences.

I've been a pc gamer forever, like 25 years. Sony has the best computer entertainment in the industry and they deserve a ton of respect.

I'll reiterate the length of the generation ""saved"" the generation If it had ended a year ago all those games would be ps4 games.

You mean sub hd, 90% cutscene, low quality textures, no trophies, multiple 8 minute installs, 3 years to get a patch MGs4?

The history of "right now"

Sometimes it seems like users just popped into existence and are trying to explain an entire generation of history without having lived it.

Not that they have no clue, but as though they're reading points off a spreadsheet.

Sony saved itself from itself, other than that the king of this generation has been third party.

If there was no Xbox 360, with no one around to give Sony a kick for their post-PS2 arrogance, this would've been one sad gen. MS saved the PS3, if there was no strong competition at the start, it would've ended as an entirely ass-backwards system.

So, no. Sony didn't save anything.

How is charging for something that was free followiing? Thats quite a stretch. Sony wanted to make PSN better and that costs money, Why would they position themselves to take a loss for that when MS is making money off LIVE. If Xbox fans complained about paying for XBL, then they would both be free now.

No, they didn't. This generation has been pathetic and Sony contributed quite a bit to it. All 3 consoles had so many problems and so many games were shit, so many copy and paste "blockbuster" games, I could go on for hours explaining...

But, Sony did make some good decisions and that's carrying over completely to the PS4, which could be a console for the ages as well as Wii U. I'm glad we're putting this awful generation behind.

MS saved the start of last gen when Sony had nothing and Sony made up for it in the end .

Yes, thats very true. Free online was touted by Sony for years. I agree with you on that. However, free PSN wasn't appreciated by the mainstream and got trashed by gamers touting XBL as better, espeically in America. Sony doesn't want to be thought off as having an inferior product, so they adjusted to make it better. With MS making all that money, I don't see why Sony should take the loss on bettering PSN, especially with PS+ giving a good value out of the gate to begin with. I wouldn't call that copying.

Um, PS3 has been outselling 360 since 2007. How do you think it surpassed 360 in sales this gen when it started off 9 million units behind. 1 yr headstart, that is all. Your fanboy is showing.

I don't see how its copying when they really had no other option to compete. I wanted PSN to be free, but XBL kept getting buyers, so that led the market to where it is now. If X1 bombs and MS removes Kinect and lowers its price, I wouldn't call it copying. Its just competing. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

.....No, I don't. How is that and it sold less than Wii and PS3? PS3 and 360s last official numbers were neck and neck at the end of last year. Its well known that PS3 sells better throughout the year. With 360 dead in Japan, and lagging in Europe. Theres zero possibility its ahead of PS3.

Agreed. They did have another option. The one they, themselves created:free mp, PS+ leases me games for $50 per year. But the genius of MS Live was the fact that MP is a very compelling reason to buy Gold. Now I personally wish it was ALL FREE. I don't like paying for anything, and would charge a quarter for friends to say my name out loud if I could. But PS+ wasn't compelling enough as it was to make the money Sony corp so desperately needs at this point. So what to do? When in Rome!! It is copying, as much as MS copied Sony by getting into the hardware business to begin with.

Competition between 3 huge powerful companies and 3 awesome (each in their own way) consoles made gaming better then ever this generation.

Calling out Sony for special praise after the 600 launch price, broken/downed/hacked PSN, "rumble is last gen", and shoddy exclusives and inferior multiplats for many years is wrong. They got their act together as Nintendo and Microsoft fell away towards the end of this generation but they were no angels.

When all three next gen systems are out, the PS4 will be the only dedicated gaming platform remaining. So, in that way, they WILL save hardcore gamers from having to wade through features they don't necessarily want or need.

But it doesn't bode well for the future since it's probably only a matter of time before Sony are forced to go the same way as Microsoft if only to compete.

It didn't surpass the 360 until this year and even that is in question due to the fact that Sony pads it's numbers with units sold from the ENTIRE Playstation family of products.

PC's aren't even part of the console wars, because it's not a stagnant system. PC's can be upgraded and modified at any time. Game consoles can't. PC games can be improved with better technology and modes. Console games can't, so there is really no comparison. This is just one of the reasons it doesn't have any generations and why I don't think PC's should be part of Console Wars. It's not a console.

Also PC's have more issues in a 5 years lifespan then a game consoles. Every time I install a new PC game on my system I find out that something else needs to be done to get the game to play or connect online. Had to do it with Starcraft 2, Planetside 2, Diablo 3, etc. etc.. Thank God I didn't bother with the Sims. Can't even tell you how many times I had to reinstall XP because of memory corruption and all kinds of other issues. I never see PC as a superior platform for gaming. It's a nice side option, but that's about it.

The idea that Sony saved this generation is pretty funny. They barely released anything if you want to consider one publisher as the saviour of 7+ years of gaming.

Sony did nothing to lead in this gen. Wii paved the way with motion controls, Xbox 360 paved the way for strong online integration and multiplayer for consoles, built in wireless controller functionality, online demos, downloadable games, video apps, movie rentals, movie purchases, party chat. Nothing was really original in the slightest but it was a culmination of these features in consoles and it set the bar pretty high. If it were just up to Sony with no Xbox 360, I doubt we'd of seen anything like this. Microsoft also had the best digital rights management (I think as a consequence of the RROD), but still something good came out of that nonetheless, allowing for transferable rights to the users console. Furthermore MS really pushed the consoles power which helped multiplatform developers out in designing games for play on both console and PC. Sony was important though, they're choosing to have many of the same features reinforced a new standard for console gaming. And the competitive atmosphere I felt really benefited gamers of either console.

Sony made great new IPs. Some of the most highly acclaimed new IPs this gen was exclusive to Sonys platform.

The 360 still out sells the PS3 in NA.

I certainly enjoyed Sony's games this gen. But saying it saved it is a bit silly

Of course PS3 won this gen. It sold more than 360 an had the best games.

Wii is just a toy

Xbox had even less games than the PS3 in its first 2 years. Call of Duty 2, Perfect Dark and Dead or Alive 4 is all it had. If it weren't for Sony even the lems would be starving on games to bash because ever since Kinect M$ stopped giving f*cks. ;)

Playstation Plus is the only thing notable that Sony contributed this generation... First-party titles & exclusives from both Sony and Microsoft were dull and forgettable... Sony saved nothing... I'd still take Xbox for online multiplayer any day...
