Sony: PS3 at 31 million, gap is now 8 million

This is straight from Peter Dille. Despite the massive growth in Japan as well as Europe and America, the gap doesnt seemed to have closed much at all...

"I mean, we've got 31 million [units sold] worldwide right now - they've got 39 million [units sold]. I don't even need to go out 10 years," he quipped.

Regarding catching up

"I'm not going to make any predictions for your interview today other than we'll pass them, but you look at where we are today and where they are today, and they had an opportunity to sprint as far ahead of us as possible when they had the head start.

The last time I heard, the gap was around 6 - 7 million.

if that's true then the gap has actually widened since last year, as i recall it got down to something like 5-6 million last year, 8 million was about where we were in 2008

Umm the gap was 8 million before the PS3 price cut and size reduction, so you're telling me that 360 managed to sell just as much as PS3 WW in the past 3 months? you have to account for year-round sales and even in the U.S. where the PS3 eventually outsold the 360 for 2 or 3 months in the fall it didn't necessarily kill 360 sales, they were almost neck and neck

It wasnt closed it just made it a little bit smaller but still MS numbers are a little bit fishy.

Going at this rate it won't outsell 360 with God of War III , Gran Turismo 5 being the only real system sellers. Don't think there are many more game that can push consoles on PS3 other than those two and Agent, Versus XIII, Persona 5, Syphon Filter. :|Adrian_Cloud

I heard MS numbers are shipped, not sold. Don't know if that makes any difference or not.

But no one is lying here, the reason why you guys are so shocked is because your basing it off estimations like VGchartz and NPD. The only people that know how much the system sold are the companies themselves. So to say they are lying, when your basing it off estimations is ridculous.

This is a great year game wise for the 360.

True enough, but for the sake of an argument PS3 could possibly pull this off with a significant game line-up that can appeal to the niche market,hardcore gamers, and the masses. Which is basically was my point, if Agent is as big as GTAIII for Sony well we all know how well that did. Persona 5 appeals to a niche rpg market and could be a break through in WW with proper marketing. Versus XIII, well its Final Fantasy Gran Turismo 5 and Syphon Filter appeal to the old school Sony gamers.

Each of these titles are new to this generation, which is why i think they will have a significant impact in pushing consoles. Games like Uncharted 2, Resistance 2 didn't really do too much to push consoles. But we all saw how well MGS4(94% increase NDP) and FFXIII(237,000 consoles sold) managed to push consoles.

also, Agent, syphon filter, and persona 5 will not push any extra systems, at least in the U.S.

sony passed 27 million at the end of sep 09

microsoft passed 31 at the end of august 09 (and over 30 around may 09)

so microsoft sold 8 mill units in 4 months (as of CES 2010) and sony sold 4 million in 4 months (as of Dilles interview)?
