Microsoft says that the Xbox One is a 10-year console, but what about the PlayStation 4? We asked Sony UK boss Fergal Gara whether the PS4 is in it for the long stretch.

"I think there's reasons to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK," he said.

"It's probably a sign of the times and how much has changed in seven years, but I think the willingness and the appetite to pick up new technology fast has probably changed quite a bit."

Thank goodness... the last generation of consoles dragged on for way too long, so if we can return to a 5 year life cycle going forward (like we used to have), I'll be happy.

And they will wait till the last year to release any good games. Greatness awaits........................meanwhile I will have fun playing all the best games on the xbox one.

Like DLC the game!

No shit. It launched three years behind the eight ball with 2010 parts. This new console Gen screams five years. Six tops.

@kingoflife9: and what's games are they a forza which is a slimmed down version of the last game but prettier, a QTE game which scored badly, a zombie game which has been done before, o and then you have the gears of war creators who have now left Microsoft so will probably go multiplat, Microsoft have nothing left. Sony always deliver on there games, Microsoft don't

Plus ps4 has more power it has already been shown already with the multiplats

Yeah getting games like Mass Effect (5 years before PS3), Bioshock (1 year), Oblivion (1 year), Left4Dead 2 and now Titanfall are certainly Microsoft not delivering on games.

Sure PS3 got them eventually, but its not really the same thing, its like watching a Oscar winning movie from 2 years ago today. The hype has moved onto a new movie and no one is discussing the old one any more.

The x1 isn't going to have a 10 year cycle, inferior tech to current competitors should bring them enough headaches already. And going by microsoft history even if they have superior games in the first year or two, which in this case they don't, they stop supporting their consoles later on by either introducing random pointless tech like the kinect or ease off of bringing exclusives to players.

I think 5 years is too short, but let's not make it 8, I'd say 6 is good. Most games started declining in quality when 2012 hit.

This should be a short gen. GPU technology is booming right now and moving faster than ever. The consoles are already outdated but Sony will want to launch a new 4k console alongside their 4k TVs

Consolites will brag about backwards compatibility while the Master Race holds all games back from 1980s on a single system.

The difference is their devices are backwards compatible and the update to the OS is universal with some limited updated features for their legacy iDevices, thats why it works and Apple update their iDevices line yearly.

For consoles it's hard to do that or make it possible since each new console needs different chip and hardware parts and their games needs huge sales to be profitable meaning a huge userbase, there are tons of other reasons why it doesn't make sense to upgrade a console in a yearly basis.

All they could do now to keep momentum and try to replicate the Apple magic is to change the design of their consoles every E3 + update the whole UI with new features and release all of that in the week after E3, it brings hype and excitement to the consumer and makes them interested for the next big update.

Can anyone imagine X1 in 2023 running all its games in 720p? That would be hysterical lol

I'm much for longer generations, and at this point we need them. People are less willing to spend $400+ on a new console every five years now that people purchase smartphones and tablets more regularly and have other sources to play video games, at least for the casual market. For developers, longer generations help slow down astronomic development costs that are approaching unstable levels as they can re-use the engines they spent developing more, thus saving them money and making their investments into no engines more worthwhile. From a technical standpoint, we are to the point where we are going to start hitting the law of diminishing returns, hard. Shorter generations means those diminishing returns will only being more noticeable and people, even the enthusiasts will be less likely to upgrade. Personally I think eight years is a perfect lifespan.

5+ is good range IMO. Hopefully by 2020 we will just have software upgradeable chips

Where ms/sony can just pay whom ever one fee update everyone systems every year or so. Then PC you can choose to buy the cpu/gpu and pay small fee to update them at your own pace

I would be happy with a 5-6 year cycle, preferably a 6 year cycle. Last generation went on too long.

They better stick with X86 going forward. The lack of backwards compatibility is the thing I hate the most about the PS4. I can understand why there is no PS3 BC because of the Cell but there should be no excuse not to have BC going forward because I don't see why they would stop using X86. I still don't understand why there is no PSone and PS2 emulation software though.

If PS4's APIs/driver is similar to AMD's Mantle then it should scale for higher grade GCNs.
