Doubt it. They will do the exact same thing they are doing now, only offering the Plus service from the start.

From your own link. "However, he expects the PSN to start making money in the following fiscal year."

I doubt them charging next gen anyhow.

u want the truth. NOTHING.

the little extra deals they offer do not justify the plus imo. i like the psn free way more. psn+ offers some free games(crappy ones).

but psn regular is amazing u dont pay and u also get deals. also u can play online for FREE

From what I've heard its the developers who take the bandwidth costs for PSN today and they aren't liking it.

If you start charging for something that used to be free, people will reject the idea, it's the way people work. If PSN is ever pay to play (DCUO and other MMOs don't count) then I will switch to PC playing or Xbox Live. I refuse to pay for a service that used to be free.

Some of the people will disagree with me, but I think the "casual" market will jump ship. That's just me though.

No this isn't MS, Sony will still offer PSN for free but i'm sure plus will be more desirable and will bring in profit, they learned their lesson this gen not to just implement what they think is something the people want they thought we'd be happy to pay $600 for a console and it bit them in the ass, they thought we'd be happy to wait delay after delay and it bit them in the ass, but most of all they thought PS3 would ride the PS2 wave with little to no effort and once again... It bit them in the ass. I like my PS3 and all and much prefer it to the money pit of Xbox but if they charge next gen then Xbox 2 will be my console of choice based on multiplats and services.

I will never never never pay to play games online. Something that has been free since the invention of online gaming. If Sony's gaming division wants to be a complete disaster they should charge for online next gen. A lot of people will say if Sony is going to charge, I may as well go with the Future xbl.

Agreed. But with Live generating income for MS, it is hard to believe that something won't change next gen for either. Whether it's MS dropping a fee due to low sales next gen, or Sony instating a fee remains to be seen.

Playstation Plus has just started to gain some profit from them. That is only the beginning tho, I'm expecting Sony starting to charge for Online Gaming + Plus perks with their new consoles and that being the only option or maybe have a Silver / Gold kind of thing. A business is a business and if they see themselves earning more of a profit with that model, then they will implement it. Some people are going to get mad of course, but what other option does a console gamer have?? Sony will likely create a smoother transaction with this change by promoting on how this new model is worth it, with free content, perks, etc. etc. to the consumer. The average consumer will buy it and Sony wins! Just like Microsoft did with Xbox Live. The Next Console debate will be who can offer the best online features for the buck.

Generally it's not profitable when you make a half dozen games and then host dedicated servers for the thousands of people that play those games. Sony loses money for PSN, and people ***** and cry about it. Microsoft strips money out of your pocket and you love them for it. Sony doesn't have to do a damn thing with PSN, they just have to stop hosting dedicated servers and let gamers do it and then they can have all the bandwidth they want for free.

I agree. I think they are just testing the water with PSN+. It's hard for a company to look the other way as Microsoft makes a killing off of Xbox Live. Even Nintendo is considering charging a small fee for online. If not this gen,it may happen on the next wave of consoles.

they still start charging now due to piracy

people have been playing pirated games online for the last 3 days

hopefully they will add a good banning system to keep hackers out and of course make it as good as Live

The sign that they will charge next route was them ADOPTING a premium model late into this gen. Unlike MS, they were in a position to test the waters. Worst case scenario, no one bought it, and they scrapped the idea altogether. The fact that people ARE actively participating in the premium model shows Sony that people are willing to pay. I wholly expect them to have a mandatory premium fee next gen, however I don't think the basic level will be as expensive as MS. I think Sony will have two models, both pay: 1 that is online play only and limited social features while a second will be competitive with MS's gold.

Sony should start charging to reinvest the revenue to create a better service. I'd pay for it if it means to get it at an Xbox Live level.

If they can offer online play for free and make PSN+ alot more attractive to consumers then they could do both next gen, like how MS could offer online play for free but dont because how would they market paying for facebook and cross game chat.

If all 3 go the pay to play route, im going PC only. The money i save from paying to play online will fund a gaming rig more capable than the consoles anyway. So its win win

They're losing money precisely because it is a better service. Xbox Live offers the service of parting you with your hard earned money.

They shouldn't, they should have a good launch line-up, no pay to play online, price it just lower than microsofts next console, and they'll be fine. Most people this gen will realise their mistake of paying for online and get a ps3

It's not mandatory to charge to make a profit, look at Steam for example. But it doesn't seem like Sony has a clear direction for the service so it's anybodys guess what they'll do, propably something stupid, like have discounts for games like Steam but charge an access fee for it like XBL and thus have neither subscribers or sales.

Pretty much. MS is good at making money. Sony, not so much.

Correction. In gaming:

Sony was good at making money, but lost their touch. Alternatively they've never been good at it and got lucky before.

Microsoft wasn't, but is getting better at it. Alternatively they're still not good at it, but got lucky now.

And Nintendo is good at making money. Period.
