They will have to make some improvements before they can think about charging for it, if they did set up a decent infrastructure and only charged per console access I think that would be perfectly acceptable though. If they follow Microsofts example I can't wait to hear the justifications on here :D.

They shouldn't, they should have a good launch line-up, no pay to play online, price it just lower than microsofts next console, and they'll be fine. Most people this gen will realise their mistake of paying for online and get a ps3

firefluff3
I don't buy that. Next gen, will be PS4 so how many online gamers are going to be buying the PS3? I believe it will still have legs, but online gaming is more about what game is currently hot. And next gen, the money will be in the new gen, not the past. I do agree with the other points: good launch line up, and remaining cheaper than the competition. It worked for the PS2, has worked for the Wii and 360. but next gen, a fee seems too likely for all 3. It will be a battle of who charges least, or offers more with it. A lot of delusional fanboy hearts will be broken when they realize their favorite company really just wants to make money, not friends.

Agreed. I think Sony is just testing the waters so to speak, with PSN+, and will charge a fee for their general online service. Maybe not this gen, but like you said, probably with the next wave of consoles.

With the longer downloads, installs, mandatory patches, the one thing going for PSN is that it offers online gaming free. If they take that away then it'll have no redeeming features against xlive.

They would still say the PSN is better because of the cell processor, or Bluray! You know its coming. I wouldn't say the PS3 fans, rather the fanboys.

Yep. It seems to have gotten better though, but still isn't up to Live imo. I've been playing a bit of God of War 3 and Uncharted 2, but I'm still finding it hard to get used to the PS3's interface. I know a lot of people who like it, I just have a hard time getting used to it. I guess I've just gotten spoiled with the 360's interface. Just wondering, does the PS3 notify when a friend logs on? I only have 3 friends who game on their PS3, but they all have 360's also, and they are never on, therefore they haven't even accepted my friend request, so I was just curious if it notified you when they logged on.

PSN being free is a huge selling point for Sony. I doubt they would charge for a service that is nearly mandatory to play online

And now we know why Microsoft charges for online. Because the object is to make money not to lose money. Apparently Sony forgot that part when it came to the release of the PS3.

But the reality of the situation was that in its infancy there would have been no way for the fledgling PSN to charge its fanbase. Everyone would have just gone to XBL. So Sony had to suck it up and provide it for free to build up a fanbase. Much like Microsoft had to swallow the entire Xbox knowing that it wouldn't make a dime just to build up a fanbase.

You have to spend money to make money. No different then over paying a high priced Free Agent when you're a crappy team looking to get better.

I guess Sony will keep the free online play since it was a good argument for the system, but I guess they will have PSN+ from the beginning and maybe other services that cost something

i think that would be the safest bet. most important thing would be keeping the online gaming free.

Why are people supporting Microsoft's stance on paying to play online?..By supporting it and consistently renewing your subscription you're essentially telling Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo that it works. Live is not leaps and bounds ahead of Steam and PSN, if and when Sony decides to add cross-party chat to PSN what will be Live's edge? Live felt more like a headset rental fee seeing as how games still had lag even though there was a strong connection and I still had access to DLC, Games on Demand and XBLA games with a Silver account.

I'd rather just buy a gaming PC if Sony and Microsoft both feel the need to pay-to-play.

Didnt you know 360 fans on SW are MS shareholders? its in thier best interest that MS nickle-dime, bleed to death thier fellow gamers and if possible make sure that this fine business model is adopted by other companies. Because if youre not extrting your userbase bad at business aparently:?

This is interesting. I'm pretty confident Sony will go the Xbox Live route next gen.

also a glaring sign that both the PS3 and PSN were colossal failures

I decided not to renew my subscription to XBL when I heard they funneled $500 million into an ad campaign for Kinect which was unnerving considering I wasn't even playing any other game but Halo 3 and Halo Reach. After spending considerable time on PSN I came to the realization that it is exactly the same as Live minus the Avatars. It's always perplexing when I see people say "Live is so much better" or "PSN is nowhere near as good as Live," the people saying that have obviously not spent very much time on PSN otherwise they'd know the only thing Live does better is making it easier to view advertisements from the dashboard..

Do not support pay-to-play

From your own link. "However, he expects the PSN to start making money in the following fiscal year."

I doubt them charging next gen anyhow.

AncientDozer

The guy who works for them. . says they expect to profit next year. When did we start fully believing "The Man"? I don't know if they'll start charging. Probably not. PSN? Not as good as Live. The only thing it does have going is it's, well, it's free. That's it. The only reason it's free is to compete with Live which isn't but is better. I'm sure they're looking at charging, though. Plus is testing those waters. They've seen Live's success and, whether you like it or not, Live has been VERY successful.

I believe they also said they expect the PS3 to become profitable in 2010, and then whadayaknow, it ends up happening in 2010.

If you don't want to beleive them, that's cool with me, we can just wait and see if they were lying or not.

Its common sense man. If something costs money to provide you charge. But then again I'm sure you work for FREE. Does this mean I take no issue paying to play online? No. I can play for free else where. But I'm not going to be stupid and wonder why they charge a fee for a service that costs money. I mean we all know PSN is making so much money right? Oh wait....

don't worry keep paying. in the end it's your money, not mine. :) and keep wishing companies struggle more the gamers, buy asking for money for something you already payed in the disc. Online.

never said it is wrong for people (in this case a 360 fan) to do what he wants to do with his money but to wish that Sony (the competition) starts asking for money, for something we already payed buying the disc, only for ownage purposes. lol. (oh and btw is Sony starts charging for online playing my stance will be the very same) but as I said. One thing is wishful thinking and another what is happening right now

Hirai said PSN will remain free because they can become profitable especially with PSN Plus and Advertising with Home, The Tester etc.

EDIT - Hirai said PSN made 36 billion yen (~430 million USD) in 2010. (at least up until his interview)

Seriously please say you was joking. Sony see the consumer in the same light as any other company.... A money bag waiting to be emptied. Sony wouldnt send you a reef of flowers if you died because you brought the PS3 so this "Sony cares" is quite litterally bogus. No company cares really to much for the consumer, They care about the money of the consumer.

True True. So many people think Sony or MS is their friend. They're not.

Add Nintendo to the equation as all 3 would steal your kidney's if they thought it would be profitable.... Sadly mine are no good so Sony, MS , Ninterrorists dont come back here with your chloraform again.

[QUOTE="Franky-the-bat"]Sony is out to make money, not friends. I will be more surprised if they didn't charge next gen.Zaibach

so...why didnt they charge this gen

PSN wasn't near the level of live when the ps3 was released, so how could they charge people for it. Let's be honest, psn was like an afterthought compared to xbox live. No doubt PSN has been improving over time, but they are still playing catch up as far as I'm concerned. Just look at the difference of last gen consoles to current, online play is a huge factor now, with huge amounts of money to be made. If Sony believe they can make a huge amount of money, like any company, they will take it. Funny thing is Sony has already started charging for psn! It's an optional choice now but it just goes to show that they want a piece of that pie, it's defiantly an induction. Will it really surprise you if they pulled a MS next gen? I wouldn't be.

I really don't mind paying a bit so that sony doesn't lose off their service. I don't even mind a crap load of advertisements for psn free and nothing for psn plus.
