X360 - 22.5 million

PS3 - 16.84 million

Difference - 5.66 million

The gap will either close or expand this holiday, what will it be, your predictions?

It will close but not by much. I am thinking at most PS3 will at least only be about 5 million behind... Looks like I was wrong but I don't care... Sony really needs to drop the PS3s price if they plan on gaining any real ground. I wasn't exspecting the new $500 model PS3 this year. I still don't think that was a good idea. We only need one model on the market not like the Xbox 360 with so many different SKUs.

Japan's Sony Corp said on Wednesday it sold 2.43 million units of its PlayStation 3 game console in July-September, up 86 percent from 1.31 million units a year earlier.

200k more then the Xbox 360 shipped in the same time period.

Sony suffers a 375 million operating loss for Q2(games division). Definately no price drop coming any time soon...

Obviously sony is still making a profit, just not nearly as much.

Down 70% yoy to. I know I wouldn't be looking at sony if I were an investor. Of course a bad statement like this means the stock price will likely decrease, and maybe if I think sony will do significantly better in the future, I might choose to invest. But, long term investing is a snooooze fest.

I expect the PS3 to take huge chunks out of the X360's lead this holiday. At this point, there's no more doubt that Sony's console is the one to go with.

the only reason i am interested in the PS3 hardware sales is simply because with a larger install base (one which is close to the 360) 3rd party devs might be encouraged to take PS3 as the lead platform when releasing multiplats and then port them to 360.... when games are on 360 as the lead platform there are big chances that Ps3 will get a slightly inferior version, while I think its much easier to port games from Ps3 to 360 and keep the same quality for both..

Wow sony are closing in.

I wonder how the price drop from MS will affect things?

If you look at sonys total sales though, you can see that this gen they are doing very well, its not just the ps3 but the psp and ps2 as well.

That's right. I hope PS3 does better this holidays, i want those PS2 days back but on PS3, where many many games were released and i've never complained about having worst multiplatform versions (in the beginning i did complain, but latter it all went ok).

Also i hope Sony does something about those mandatory installs, i'm so sick of them

Can somebody please explain how sony is closing in, at least anywhere but japan? The largest lead the 360 ever had was roughly 6.5 million consoles. These numbers would suggest the lead is now 5.5 million. That would mean the PS3 has gained 1 million since the day they launched. Japan alone accounts for a bit more than a 1.5 million lead. That would mean the PS3 has fallen behind by a half a million everywhere else. Where are these big gains coming? Now that the PS3 hasn't been outselling the 360 by too much even in Japan, how is it going to close the gap?

Yeah Yeah we all know that your such a 360 fanboy. It's closing in, doesn't matter in which country it sales better. Anyway, holidays are what mark the real diference, lets see what happens, last year Metal Gear Solid 4 wasn't released neither Little Big Planet. In fact, last year i think there weren't any good reasons to get a PS3, it was all bad news

ExtremeOne316

Gears 2 will make a difference. It does not matter that sony has loadas of great titles coming out, so far there have not been many adverts for them, but gears 1 was advertised soooo much gears 2 is already a known game for casuals.

Sony needs to market more if they are gong to get the casuals this gen. They have the games, but not the hype unfortunately.

How can you say that? On the Eve of the PS3/Wii launch M$ was bragging they hit the 10 Million mark. That means that Sony was 0, M$ was around 10 million. Maybe they hit 12 million, maybe they lied and were at 8-9 million, but where do you get 6.5 million?

Anyways, you have a great point about closing the gap, and whatnot, I only have a problem with that first part of your paragraph.

So the PS3/360 gap really hasnt closed at all, and from the looks of it, it seems that MS are going to widen the gap again this holiday

Let me get this straight, just woken up so im a little slow, but Sony made a loss of Y39.5 billion on their games division. Also, how much of a money hole was the PS3, AFAIK, its still losing billions even though the last quarters have been posted profit due to PS2 and PSP related sales

MS said they shipped 10 million by Dec 31(I'm not even counting the fact that there were massive rumors of "stuffing the channel"). Sales were reportedly roughly 7 to 7.5 million by that date, and sony sold between 500,000 to 1 million by dec 31. That would be roughly a 6.5 million console lead. I'm talking about sales, not shipped.

Wow, you don't read very well do you? It "closed in" almost entirely in Japan. How is it going to continue to "close in" if it no longer outsells the 360 in japan by a wide margin? Nothing "fanboyish" about it, though there certainly was about your reaction to it. You're correct the holidays DO make a difference, and MS JUST dropped the price of the machine and has one of the biggest releases of the generation ready for it. If the recent trend of the 360 outselling the PS3 holds true through the holidays, then the gap will widen. It's pretty simple math.

Umm, 360 sales - PS3 sales = deficeit?

Finding old numbers is hard, but here is a link where MS talks of "selling" 10 mil worldwide by the end of dec 2006. Note that "selling" in this instance is "sold to retail". According to this MS had shipped 8 million by dec 1st of 2006. 8 million minus all the stock sitting on shelves worldwide would put 360 actual sales on dec 1 likely somewhere between 6 and 7 million. That would mean the PS3 had to sell 500,000 units from launch to dec 1 worldwide to put the gap at 6.5 million if the 360 sales were on the high end of estimates.

Well i went over to VGC, and the gap was almost 7 million back in Jan, its not 5.5 million and the holiday still to go which MS seem to be tipped to win (super cheap console, Gears which has more casual power than RFOM, family and kiddy bundles etc...).

As usual, Cows were far to quick to get to conclusions. At this rate, itll take years before Sony catch-up, minimum of two.

X360 - 22.5 million

PS3 - 16.84 million

Difference - 5.66 million

The gap will either close or expand this holiday, what will it be, your predictions?

MightyMuna

It will widen. The 360 will sell out due to its bundled games during the holidays season and cheaper price IMO.

ExtremeOne316

Whoever wants Gears 2 already has a 360.

Gears 2 will sell a huge amount of software, but it won't sell 360's the way MGS4 sold PS3's.

Only the super die hard fanboys care about shipped numbers at least I could understand debating sold numbers to the people. Any of the makers could have sold(shipped) a billion to the stores that does not mean the number of what people bought is anywhere close to that. Also the companys always mess with these numbers in different ways.

Only thing I wonder about is how much the game divisions make money wise.

The gap between the 360 and PS3 will get even better after Gears of War 2 comes out

angry_fork

Whoever wants Gears 2 already has a 360.

Gears 2 will sell a huge amount of software, but it won't sell 360's the way MGS4 sold PS3's.

Thats something we hear everytime a big game for the 360 is about to come out:|

If that is the case, why is it growing in NA and holding steady in EU?

The 200$ price tag is what's making it do that, not Gears 2.

sucks when a companies main profit revenue is from high value impulse purchases likes TV's, and add a garbage economy to the mix, and well yeah gonna be a tough year.

Is that why the 360 sold more then the PS2 last 2 NPDs and around last 7 weeks in japan? Seems people still want a 360. I love how cows say every big game no one would want a 360 because they would have alrteady bought one.

Before the price cut the 360 was still growing in NA:?

Maybe I missed it but did it say how much money the PS3 made not just the game division?

The gap will either close or expand this holiday, what will it be, your predictions?

metalgear-solid

I expect the PS3 to take huge chunks out of the X360's lead this holiday. At this point, there's no more doubt that Sony's console is the one to go with.

Except that it has by far the worst lineup of games and the worst online service.

No, it was steady. I think you're confusing 360 with PS3, because PS3 was growing in NA before 360 had the price cut, and now 360 is back to how it used to be.

I never said anything about Japan what so ever, the reason it's selling like crazy in Japan is the RPG's + cheaper price + bundles. Japan doesn't care about Gears 2.

Halo 3 sold consoles
Bioshock sold consoles
Mass Effect sold consoles

Gears of War 2, will not sell as many consoles as people think it will. It won't double the console sales from it's previous month like MGS4 did for PS3.

MGS4 is Metal Gear going into next-gen and everyone wanted it like MGS2 for PS2. Gears of War came out this-gen, whoever wanted Gears got a 360 for it already, period.

OK!@!!!!12W1323 OMG I MUST TYPE IN CAPITALS DAMIT PLEASE LISTEN TO ME PLEASE LOOK FOR REAL I'M SO SERIOUS FOR REAL

wtf, Shut up it's not that serious.

PS3 out-sold 360 worldwide in 2007.

PS3 out-sold 360 worldwide in 2008 until what, August? September? whenever Microsoft did the price cut and it started jumping in Japan.

Just get over it already, this isn't about that anyway, this is my point that Gears 2 won't somehow magically convince somebody to buy a 360, when Gears of War has been out for 2 years already and Gears 2 isn't THAT much of a step up from Gears 1 to the point where it'll make people jump for joy and do a backflip for a 360.

Angry fanboy spouting BS, so delusional youve now gone off the actual point, what next, marketting doesnt sell consoles:|

Im currently at university so i havent got the figures, but considering you dont know what you what youre talking about, you can carry on believing what you want:lol:

At least this puts to bed the nonsense about the PS3 making a profit.

As for the whole Sony catching up, its made a small in road but I can see the 360 putting more distance again with the price cut.

you know..you guys keep on arguing about 360 vs Ps3 sales but I find the Ps2 sales far more interesting

I mean, it outsold the Ps3 2:1 in hardware and 3:1 in software sales:|

Wow, Sony BMG took a 45% loss? Looks like some musical artists will be out of contracts pretty soon.
