PS3 out-sold 360 worldwide in 2008 until what, August? September? whenever Microsoft did the price cut and it started jumping in Japan.
Just get over it already, this isn't about that anyway, this is my point that Gears 2 won't somehow magically convince somebody to buy a 360, when Gears of War has been out for 2 years already and Gears 2 isn't THAT much of a step up from Gears 1 to the point where it'll make people jump for joy and do a backflip for a 360.

 Calm down, its just the internet.
You have to consider some factors... Everyone that was willing to buy a 360 for Gears of War @ $299 and $399 PROBABLY already did so(Which doesn't mean people won't pay the same price to play Gears of War 2, thats arguing a moot point but lets go with it anyways). You have completely different scenarios here: Xbox is cheaper than it was in 2006, among other things.
My point is, many people need incentive and the 360 being $100 cheaper accross the board may be enough to lure in those that were on-the-fence about buying a console for this game.

That's certainly possible, I completely forgot that you can get a 360 for 200$ now, and last-gen PS2 owners that haven't jumped ship to next-gen yet will probably buy those if they want, so you're right.
I was going by the 'normal' price though which is 3-350, which is practically how much it was at launch anyway so whoever wanted to buy that console more then likely wouldn't buy it just because Gears 2 is coming out, it would be a combination of factors. All i'm saying is Gears 2 can't sell a bunch of consoles on it's own like MGS4 did, it has to work in conjunction with 360's price, the New Live experience etc. but some people have it in their head that people will buy a 360 for Gears 2 like they would a PS3 for Little Big Planet.
[QUOTE="blue_hazy_basic"][QUOTE="angry_fork"][QUOTE="FirstDiscovery"][QUOTE="angry_fork"]I would suggest you go check the month-over-month figures, its been outselling its previous months EVERY SINGLE TIMENo, it was steady. I think you're confusing 360 with PS3, because PS3 was growing in NA before 360 had the price cut, and now 360 is back to how it used to be.

official figures>vgchartzIt's a good thing i'm going on official figures then.
And the official Sony sold figures are where?Well sony still has the keys of success, the ps3 will eventually outsell the 360 in overall units. The 360 was cheaper and still got outsold, the keys to sonys sucess are
1. Playstation is a big name, definately bigger then the xbox and more popular
2. They still have more third party support
3. They still have alot of their most popular games set for next year or beyond
now i will say this, i as a sony fan have been very impressed with the 360, ( not the hardware, i hate the 360 hardware), and while i do think the ps3 will eventually beat the 360 in the long run, the 360 wont be too far behind imo
now with all of that said, THE 360 WILL SMASH THE PS3 COME THIS HOLIDAY , I GURANTEE IT, 400$ console is STILL TO EXPENSIVE, DROP THE PRICE SONY.
and lastly, i think that even with the holiday coming up and the 360 winning, i think the ps3 will still win this year overall. but maybe if the ps3 gets hammerd over the holiday season by the 360, sony will realize they need to do what? CUT THE PRICE
O AND IM SICK OF THE MANDATORY INSTALLS
the 360 fanboys confuse me, its like they dont realize that the 360 will be overtaken eventually by the ps3. The ps3 wont have a 400$ price tag forever you know. Does anyone honestly think the 360 has a chance at all when the ps3 has another price drop? i mean the ps3 has already outsold it the entire year last year, and most of this year. so what does ms do? they cut the price. its called being desperate, and your all happy because your 200$ console is outselling a 400$ console now? what about before the price cut?, get REAL people. Sooner or later ms isnt going to be able to cut the price anymore, and honestly looking at the numbers, the 360 is going to get passed up by the ps3 eventually.
like i said before i think that unless sony drops the ps3 price, the 360 will definately outsell it this holiday season, but once sony does drop the price, ps3>>>>360 in terms of sales

Bren128
so by your logic, when ms cuts price, it's desperation and when sony does it, it's a tactic? :D
remove your fan google, realize that sony doesn't have the MONEY to cut their console price right now
what are they going to do? borrow MORE money? maybe up to 14 billion in debt now? i mean, when a companys' 30 % belongs to the lenders, they don't have the POWER to think about the console war
16.84 million shipped. They're probably around 15.5 million sold to the install base then. Yeah, they're around 5 million behind the 360. Seems like the PS3 is on a similar pace as the 360 in terms of sales. It's quite possible that they end up around 33 million as well. I think a better indication will be after this holiday season and seeing how much they sell. Adding those numbers up and comparing them to the 360's 2nd YTD sales will show us just what kind of pace the PS3 is on.
If I remember correctly, by the end of Dec. 2007, the 360 had shipped around 17-18 million. It seems like Sony might reach that number.
Also, I think this shows that the PS3 is doing well in Europe. Last week in Japan, the PS3 sold roughly 4000 consoles. In NA, they sold roughly 250k consoles. I'm guessing Europe has purchased a bulk of their consoles and is helping them keep pace.

I disagree that they will not make a PS4. For many years in the past with the PS1 and PS2, the gaming division was the company's biggest earner of profits and carried the company through tough times. It is very likely that Sony will go with innovation next gen rather than improving the graphics so that the tech will not cost them as much. IMO, they will try to release a console at the $300 price point instead of the $600 price point they did this gen. At $300, they will have good success as the Sony Playstation name will bring in buyers.

Agree with this. Sony is far from out of the console race.
PS1 + PS2 sold a combined what, 250 million units by now? that's utterly insane. They're not going to call it quits just because one of their consoles didn't sell as much as they'd like (also note that PS3 isn't even close to the failure that consoles like Dreamcast were).
I think Sony will expand on Cell technology for PS4, and NOT create an all new processor. It'll have the same next-gen spec upgrades that you'd expect, but it'll be similar technology as PS3 so dev's won't have such a hard time with it.
I also think they'll secure many big exclusives, and keep the price to 300-400$. Next-gen is going to be very interesting to say the least and we'll see how it all plays out.
[QUOTE="MightyMuna"]I expect the PS3 to take huge chunks out of the X360's lead this holiday. At this point, there's no more doubt that Sony's console is the one to go with. The gap will either close or expand this holiday, what will it be, your predictions?

Why would you say that? The 360's traditional strength has been the holidays, even matching wii sales at times last season.

I agree with your 1st and 3rd keys to Sony's success. They still have quite a few of their key franchises that haven't been released yet and that will help spur sales.
The 2nd one is a little more debatable. Besides the games that were announced before launch, there really haven't been as many new announcements of 3rd party games for the PS3. I also think the 360 has carved out a nice slice of the pie that many 3rd parties find enticing. It is more likely that the two systems will continue to share more and more 3rd party games as this gen matures. There just isn't any incentive to go exclusive either way unless there was a certain demographic that the dev wants to target, for example, Japan.
I'm also thinking that the PS3 will outsell the 360. They'll both be around the mid 30 million mark, which is quite an achievement. These new numbers seem to support this notion as the PS3 seems to have shipped slightly a bit more during the same time as the 360.
Also, Sony will not cut the price this year. They're reporting a loss in their gaming division this fiscal report. It is more important to Sony to sell at the current price point than it is to gain market share at this point in time. They don't want to continue to bleed money by cutting the price especially since the holidays are near and they will sell many consoles. They probably won't outsell the 360 in the US, but it will be more competitive in Europe and Japan.

We may see it surpass soon.

Heh no, its only a little bit ahead of the 360's pace. MS announced "over 16 million shipped" this time last year. The PS3 seems to be dieing in Japan and MS is taking over North America again. Europ can only take you so far. so its basically keeping pace but that 5 million gap aint getting any smaller.

Times might change, but Sony is still investing a lot into their gaming division. We're already seeing proof of this. Despite the losses the entire company has suffered, they are still investing heavily into their 1st and 2nd party devs. Even Sony executives have said that they can't rely on 3rd parties to drive PS3 sales, so they're going to have to rely more on their own games. This means putting more money into it to help spur sales.
What this shows is that Sony is serious about making their gaming division profitable again. They know that if they succeed as they've done in the past, they can be very profitable for the entire company. This gen has definitely been a setback, but they've made gains that might flourish in the future. I'm talking about Blu-Ray. If this format becomes the standard in a few years, then this gen would have been worth it to them.
Also, I would say that Sony's stock price is down because the economy is down. Almost everyone's stock prices are down including MS and Nintendo. Of course, this fiscal report doesn't help Sony, but they are not very likely to go out of business either. Stock holders will definitely not like the losses, but it's not panic time yet for them. The PS3 will be successful enough for Sony to have another console next gen.

Since those who played Gears 1 are already a part of the install base, why would they buy another console to play Gears 2? So Gears 2 might sell consoles, but probably not as many as people think.
MGS4, on the other hand, is the first MGS game to appear on any of the current gen consoles, so it was able to sell more consoles due to that reason.
[QUOTE="Pro_wrestler"][QUOTE="angry_fork"]All i'm saying is Gears 2 can't sell a bunch of consoles on it's own like MGS4 did, it has to work in conjunction with 360's price, the New Live experience etc. but some people have it in their head that people will buy a 360 for Gears 2 like they would a PS3 for Little Big Planet.

Well that would be reasonable if Halo 2 hadn't propelled the 360 past the mighty PS2 in holiday 2004. I mean of course everyone who wanted to play Halo would have already bought an Xbox right? This theory hasent ever been proven in practice. Big exclusive releases always propell sales.

im still waiting for your answer, was sega EVER in 12 billion in debt?
I dunnobut fact is, Sega left the hardware market (due to 4 flopped hardware products. Sega Mega CD , Sega 32x, Saturn and Dreamcast) and turned into a Software company
Sony is still here in the hardware race. So I don't think Sony is in worse shape than Sega was. not yet anyway

Since when do you need to play them to know what's been improved.
The previews/reviews already say it for you...
Gears of War 1 to 2
1. 2 new guns, which include Flamethrower and some new default gun.
2. New maps
3. 2 more players in multiplayer
Resistance 1 to 2
1. Full multiplayer co-op campaign up to 8 players
2. New guns (don't know how many)
3. New maps
4. 20 more players in multiplayer
5. Control revamp similar to Call of Duty 4
6. Much, much higher scale in both the campaign and multiplayer
k? k.

yap... nothing like adding "Full multiplayer co-op campaign up to 8 players", "20 more players in multiplayer" and "Much, much higher scale in both the campaign and multiplayer" to make resistance's list look bigger but then only saying
"2 more players in multiplayer" when it also included campaign and co-op just to make it's list look smaller... good job
oh and you forgot to add "new moves" on gears

The campaign is confirmed by Epic to be the same size as Gears 1 campaign in length. Nothing has been said about the co-op yet I believe.
wow Sony games LOST 39.5 billion yen- thats $380 Million in just 1 one quarter while the 360 made a $180 Million profit
very unlikely the PS3 will ever recover these losses

Personally i found your "new moves?...lol" comment hilarious it's like it's the first time you heard of this and now you're downplaying it because it's so conveniant
by new moves i mean stuff like
chainsaw duels
or
grabbing your enemies and using them as shield

Sega failed and almost went out of business, their standing in the industry is but a shadow of what it was years ago.I don't think you can say the same thing about Sony. As for you answer, I don't know and really I don't care.[QUOTE="ExtremeOne316"]The gap between the 360 and PS3 will get even better after Gears of War 2 comes out
angry_fork
Whoever wants Gears 2 already has a 360.
Gears 2 will sell a huge amount of software, but it won't sell 360's the way MGS4 sold PS3's.
Agreed. The thing that will sell 360s is the $199.99 price tag, not Gears 2. Even GTA IV didn't move 360s. The ONLY game that made 360 sales jump this year is Halo 3, but that is only because there were many people who would not buy the 360 until Halo 3 arrived. Gears 2 might be popular, but I highly doubt there are people out there going "I won't buy a 360 until Gears 2 arrives".

Sorry I thought you meant those moves when people are about to die and you finish them off. I completely forgot about those other 2 which definately change the gameplay up.
