Or maybe they're hoping people in America will try to prove them wrong by buying lots of PS3s to prove they aren't cheap.
Or maybe that Sony exec isn't all that bright.

:lol: I just had to play out the whole reverse psychology idea.
I don't think he was referring to labour. What I think he meant when he was speaking about massive land was the united states has a very large population. In order to sell the most products they would have to price the PS3 cheaper because Americans are more budget concious than the rest of the world. In order to make the most money and get their product out they needed to sell at the right price, which in the US is cheaper thasn the rest of the world.BumFluff122
Americans are budget concious?
It's a fact that the US has the lowest savings rate in the developed world. Just check this link if you don't believe me.
[QUOTE="espoac"]I'd call Americans a lot of things; fat, ignorant, uneducated, even religious fanatics who believe "Leave it to Beaver" was an accurate example of 1950s and 1960s life(J/K). But cheap? I don't think so Sony, if your neighbors the Jones get new siding, you get better siding , if you get a new power sander they get the deluxe model, if they get the 8-seat 6 MPG SUV for their 2 kids you get the 2.5 MPG SUV with the DVD player and amphibious mode just in case you need to duck into the river when the terrorists attack while out on a family trip to the local mall.DarthmattUneducated?! tisk tisk. One thing is for sure, there are people out there who can afford items such as the PS3. But for a majority of middle class Americans a $600 game console is more of a luxury hobby item than anything. Regular people have rent, bills, debt, need to feed kids, save money...etc. In the world of the middle and lower class, people have less flexible incomes and luxury items rank at the bottom of the list of things they need. and you are saying $400 Xbox 360 is not a luxury hobby item? ALL game console is luxury hobby items. You don't need it to survive.
now that was one retarded comment on behalf of the interviewee. I make 5000 a month, I don't have a PS3 because it doesn't make any sense to GET one yet. I have a 360 because there are lots of games plus it was 200 bux cheaper, win win in my eyes. At this moment I could run right out to a gamestop and pick up the PS3, but what would I do with it other than watch the lates bond flick? That's over 600 clams for a blu ray movie.
 I know tons of other peple who stayed away from the PS3 as well for the vey same reason. When they ome down to earth and cut the price down to 400and get some games, THEN I'll buy one. But let's face it: the product is only worth as much as the consumer s willing to pay for it, when they realise it isn't selling, they'll drop that price.Â
 As for the UK, enjoy those high taxes.
Pure stupid. Almost any american, even if they didn't have the money, that wanted a ps3 could simply drive to the store and charge a ps3 on a credit card. Their not. Obviously they don't want one.
BTW, I know poor people who have bought a ps3 because they couldn't afford a 360 and a computer, and hearing that the ps3 is really a super computer and video game system, bought the ps3. So really ps3s are for poor people.

Then why don't they use deoderant?
It's called bad wording. God I despise you people who sit here and go "OH EM GEE!!! TEH SONY SAID WE ARE TEH CHEAP. WII60 FOR ME!!!" It's kind of funny how so many of you "gamers" online take these things so seriously.SergeantSnitch
[QUOTE="TheJustin"][QUOTE="Runningflame570"]Sony UK Didn't Call Americans 'Cheap' :|SergeantSnitch
and that is why , my friends, i WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SONY PRODUCT EVER AGAIN!
HOW DARE YOU SONY!!!
HOW DARE YOU put me in a box and label something that you know NOTHING about!
HOW DARE YOU bite the hand that has FED you for SO LONG!
HOW DARE YOU blame America for you own "capatilist strategies" that have failed you this round!
HOW DARE YOU take your insecurities out on the country that has MADE YOU WHAT YOU ARE TODAY!!!!
I cant belive this and i am outraged! Its time to show fony what us "cheap Americans" do to those who betray and pervert our trust. SONY WILL FALL......and the "American" people know something about what effect the voice of "WE THE PEOPLE" can have...even on a company like fony. Say what you all want....this will not be ignored by the ones who matter.
[QUOTE="peter1191"]cheatymcshifty , your point is interesting, but its mostly communism that slows progress. Capitalism is the opposite. Communism weakens a person's incentive to work harder, after all, if the government controls everything, why should you bother working hard? Aside from this off-topic talk, Americans are cheap. But, people like to stereotype Americans, so I never like to admit it. Either way, I was not born in the U.S., but raised. As an Egyptian, I know the true meaning of cheap. Americans are cheap, but they know when a video console cost too much for what its worth.cheatymcshiftyOh, yeah, competition drives progress, i worded it poorly.. but, what i mean, is like... Look at blu-ray vs. HDDVD... now, if there was just one of those, that one would be larger, no one would be buying a player that wont play anything in new in 2 years, and all companies would profit, rather than one (or some) companie(s) profiting and the rest losing money on a failed project. Same with cell phone bands, if GSM was the standard, some companies wouldent be playing catch up, replacing towers, etc. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm a proponet of capitolisim to say the least, but thats how it is, imo.But without competition, there's less incentive to create newer, better things. I'm pretty sure GSM wouldn't have even started to try things like EDGE if it hasn't been pushed by competition from the CDMA camp. Even in politics and warfare, competition in one form or another spurs innovation--innovations in radar and stealth cause each other to keep improving. Even in sports, friendly rivalries (like traditional college football rivalry games) are considered a good thing: gives you a reason to stay in form.

Why is the PlayStation 3 more expensive in the UK than it is in the rest of Europe?
Well the first thing that is important is that I want the price to be as low as possible, because the lower the price the more we sell - we're a software model.
If you take the product at the factory gates there are slight variations to price if you're putting out a single sku product, but it's very, very small. But then the differences start to accumulate. If you've got different shipping costs and import duties that makes variation in price. And that's just getting it into a country. Then you have a look at the economic and financial situation in each and every territory. That's where the differences start to vary massively.
If you take what's considered to be the most expensive and the least expensive - consider the US with its massive land and cheap people. Then you look at the UK - a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium, and the cost of people is a lot more. The cost of retail is vastly more in the UK than it is in the US and that's before you even stop to consider the US doesn't have VAT at RRP, they put a small amount on afterwards. Whereas, we get stung by 17.5 per cent. And pity the poor Irish and places like Sweden.

Well Americans have common sense (I hope) lol. Once the Xbox 360 came out and raised the level of graphics people are not exactly in awe over the PS3 I'm not paying 200 more for the same or worse performance you can call me cheap but I'm intelligent eough to know what warrants 600 and what doesn't. Face the facts Sony got greedy and greed will be every companys undoing eventually
well the language in the response seems quite poor...people are more expensive in the UK??? but they're cheap in the USA???
Now if we all just think about it I'm sure we can make sense of it...the GBP is a stronger currency than the USD...plus all the mad trading taxes in the UK, you get higher relative price points for EVERYTHING here not just Ps3's...
The average wealth of people in the UK relative to the US is probably higher as well. I mean I earn $800+/month working part-time in a convenience store!

Ummm actually US has more rich people I actually have family out there but the cost of living in alot of areas in the US is higher in alot of areas mainly boston,san fran, new york, and honolulu areas.

 Back to Sony, when they say Americans are cheap, did he mean that we are cheap with money or did he really mean that Americans are poor?

Of course we would be more budget conscious because the cost of living keeps rising we mortgages, rent, car payments, kids to feed we can't worry about something like a $600 system he made it seem like "o PS3 is out you have to buy one if not then the whole world is over" nobody in america is really worried about something as miniscule on the grand scale of things like the PS3, I'll buy any other Sony electronic anyday of the week hands down but I ain't touching that PS3 yet not until it gets a price drop or I start winning some money!!!!
[QUOTE="UndyingVayne"]it's all true.Toaster_Cell
 In a time when wages are low and taxes are high, do you expect us Middle Class Americans to have enough disposible income to just buy a PS3? I would rather buy groceries than save up for the PS3 (although it's shaping up to be more and more of a tempting purchase with Home and MGS4)
Yes, exactly. The middle class is becoming more of a minority. All yu have is low class and high class thanks to our government. So how can you expect most of us to be able to afford a PS3 when we have bills to pay.Please Log In to post.
