In the long run i think it was the right move by Sony,at least if they lost this gen they will get something out of it...the format war which is actually just as big as the ps3's lifespan if lets say blu-ray is used as the standard medium for delivering films/games for the next 10-15 years.blacktorn

Within 10 years, fiber optic broadband saturation will be so high (and affordable) that only the elderly will be relying on physical media... of any kind.

Anyway, the radio sucks.  I do have my music preferences.  I just don't put time into them.  Do you have a link to the... pay as you play thing, so I could see what songs it has?

Now that EU is backing HD DVD and hd dvd players outselling bluray players 4 to 1 in North America, it doesn't look good for bluray's outlook....

Europe is a LOT of people...:)

Napster is one service.  Rhapsody is another.  I think even Yahoo got into the music biz.

1. Itunes: http://www.apple.com/itunes/

2. Napster: http://www.napster.com/

3. Walmart: http://musicdownloads.walmart.com/

4. Rhapsody (from Real): http://www.listen.com/

5. http://www.buymusic.com/

6. http://www.connect.com/

7. http://www.emusic.com/

Napter is good too. Download an unlimited amount of songs for 15 a month.

And Zune gives you the option of having an unlimited service or paying 79 points per song.

This thread points to what I have been saying since the PSX was launched. Sony IS NOT, WAS NOT and NEVER WILL BE a game company. That's not their M.O. They are an ELECTRONICS company. Nintendo is a game company (Call them kiddy all you want), Sega is/was a game company. That's their primary focus.

Saying that the PS2, PSP and PS3 were/are trojan horses for new formats is a no brainer when you look at who's behind it all. I mean sure some great games are likely to slip through the cracks but that's neither her or there for Sony because they have their sights set on an entirely different target. The only reason you are hearing rumblings now about the corporate shuffle is because Sony didn't quite expect the reception that the Wii has been recieving, which could possibly put a major dent in their trojan horse blueprint.

Make no mistake about it, if things continue down this road in 08 through 09, don't expect to see a PS4. Quote me on that.

Asian corporations can't be pigeon holed like that. Sony is a games corporation if they want to be and can be, and have been, successful at it. Sony also produces movies, hold insurance holdings, cell phone partnerships, and has a consumer credit and finance branch. It's quite common for Asian corporations to excel at varied operations. Hyndai makes cars, heavy construction equipment, and operates shipping congolomerates. Samsung makes everything from TV's, cell phones kitchen appliances, to solid surface countertops. Don't even get me started on Mitsubishi or Nissan.

What Sony has been sucessful at from the beginning was courting 3rd party devs to build up the PSX library because Sony alone sure as hell wasn't equipped to carry a home console on their own. They couldn't because games was never their primary focus.  Thanks for bringing up Samsung cuz you just proved my point.  They are an ELECTRONICS company. That is their primary focus and that is what they are known for no matter what else they happen to be involved in. Hyndia, Mitsubishi and Nissan are MANUFACTURERS. That is their primary focus.  You see the pattern forming yet?

Edit - Now Nintendo is a GAMING company.  THAT is their primary focus no matter what else they happen to be involved in. They have proven that nearly 2 generations in a row by having to support the N64 and Gamecube almost entirely by themselves. Now ask yourself this question.  If SONY was in that same position, do you honestly think we would be talking about a PS3 today?

By making Blu ray a intergral part of the PS3 they knew they would win the formats wars. They also knew that they would lose a big chunk  of the gaming market to MS and Nintendo by pricing the PS3 at $599/£425.

I personally think they did the right thing, with the success of the Wii the PS3 would still be struggling even if it was $200 less.

There would also be nothing that would set it apart from the 360 and with so many 3rd party games going multi-plat and and big 360 games like Gears,Mass Effect and Halo3 out before any of Sony's big guns they would still be losing out to MS for the first few years.

I think 2008 is going to be the big year for Sony,if Blu Ray has won the format war by then and they manage to drop the price .MGS4 and FFXIII and maybe GT5?should come out then as well, all those factors comnined should give the PS3 a massive boost in sales.

By then we'll also know if the Wii was a fad or not.Personally I think the Wii will still be going strong but its just not my cup of tea at the moment.

Well thats my take on the state of teh System Wars at teh mo.

tango90101

that doesn't make sense.  a console has never dicated the outcome of formats, contrary to what the ps forums say.

The PS3 is already having a massive impact on Blu Ray movie sales.

The last time there was a major format war consoles were using cartridges and movies where on tape.

Things have changed a bit since then hd.;)

I somewhat agree with you. However, by the time, IF Bluray wins out, there's still that large percentage of the population without HDTVs, this is something all three gaming companies cannot force on others. You can force an HD format, but never will you force people to buy another TV. gnutux

Isn't the FCC mandating that all broadcasts be HD in the very near future?  I've heard that for years now.  If they did, although it wouldn't FORCE people to upgrade, it sure would be a huge motivating factor for the consumer.  Especially since that if HD was the standard, HDTV prices would drop down to current SD prices.

The  prices of HD TV's are coming down all the time and HDTV's were on of the bestselling appliances last Christmas. With more price drops by the end of the year they could be mainstream in a few years.

Ive just recently got a HDTV and I cant get enough HD content,I'm loving the Blu Ray in my PS3 at the moment.

Lack of games has helped Bluray so far. Same way lack of games had lemmings salivating for XBL arcade games in the early days.

It will be interesting to see how well Blue Ray fares after the Ps3 starts getting compelling games.  When I 1st got my PS2, the same draught occured and I remember being more excited about watching DVDs on my PS2 than playing the mediocre launch games.  Deja Vu all over again.

Exactly. With no games out, that disposable income can go to purchasing 2 BD movies. When games are prevalent, people will think twice before buying 1-2 titles AND a BD movie that can be $25-30 a title.
