Whew... what the hell is going on here? Is this really Sony talking?

When asked about the PS Move, this is what Mark Howsen, Sales Director, had to say:

"Wii was deliberately pick up and play. We completely understand that and, let's be honest, they've done a superb job. I think with Move it's all about appealing to skill. It's about the learning curve that's built into the experience. It provides that satisfaction you're talking about. The more you play the better you get. That's part and parcel of the traditional gaming experience."

Whoa, man. Looks like PS3/Move fanboys dissing on the Wii just got shot in the foot.

Well, they are going to have to if they are going to defend themselves with the Move. You can't say you hate something, and yet do the same thing.

Say what you like about the Wii, it has sold the same number of units as the PS3 and 360 combined. From a business point of view it's hard to knock.

you might not like the Wii but seriously ..... Nintendo has done a phenomenal job with the Wii in the sense that its opened up gaming to a huge audience thats been absent from gaming. It might not be the best "hardcore" or "average" gamer console buts done great as a casual console; not saying the Wii doesn't have hardcore titles but the system isn't aimed at the hardcore.

I think Sony might have caught onto how dumb and hypocritical they sounded calling the Wii and gimmick and are now making an effort to be more diplomatic. Which is a good thing because their recent "appeal to our fanboys" marketing schtick seemed kind of lame.

That comment has a different semantical value than you'd think when reading the topic title, though. What they're actually saying is something like 'they're doing their best... in their own way', implying that the Wii is only for superficial gaming sessions and that Move is the real deal.

They're incorrect, by the way.

So basically they're admitting their hardware is badly made? Because as far as I'm concerned any controller should be pick up and play.

Move is still a copy...and Capcom has also done wonders on the Wii. I mean they gave the Wii Tatsunoko vs Capcom!

I think Sony's "appeal to the hardcore with Move" approach is going to fail big time. Hardcore gamers would rather use a controller.

But then again, I don't see MS's casual approach gaining much traction with the Wii dominating in such a major way.

Basically, they are acknowledging that Nintendo did a good job in making a very accessible system and in that regards, the Wii excels. However, they distance their version of motion controls from Nintendo's a little bit by saying that with Move, they are trying to appeal to the traditional gamer who wants a bit of challenge and depth and that their product offers those types of games (implied as opposed to the Wii). If you read between the lines, Sony's Sales Director is conveying a different message entirely than what you presented.

It doesn't, it's the same thing. The Wiimote was marketed for anyone to pick and play, Sony's trying to market it as something the hardcore would enjoy. If they marketed it the say as the Wii then casual gamers or the newcomers wouldn't bother buying it. I mean why bother spending more for something that doesn't have as many games around the controller when you can just get a Wii, cheaper and has more games.

I understand that. It is still rare for Sony to not be totally antagonistic towards Nintendo though, and it makes for a fresh change, and THAT was what I was referring to.

It's the same arrogant attitude, they just disguised it a bit better than their usual slip of the tongue comments.

But this is exactly what I mean. In my other thread, I posted them contradicting themselves. The least they can do is BE CONSISTENT WITH THEMSELVES. That'll only happen if they watch what they say, as they apparently did here.

hahaha ....took the words right out of my mouth. Sony has been disparaging the Wii until they announced Move. Sony is the worst company of the three. Arrogant even in last place. Pathetic.

He's a Sales Director........

Not mentioning the Wii, in a Sales discussion is avoiding the elephant in the room.

There are still some of that famous Sony Arrogance (TM) in there though........

Move taking skill?

Yeah right!

It all reminds me of a scene from The Simpsons where Ned Flanders becomes Principal at school while in assembly he says "I'll put the 'pal' back in Principal." and the kids laugh then Superintendent Chalmers follows him trying to gain the same favor saying "And I'll put the 'super' back in Superintendent." to stony silence then going to his companion asking"I don't get it, it wasthe exact same joke what gives?"

I agree with this, however Natal may have a chance with casuals. They eat up those gimmicks for menu navigation and stuffs like Just Dance.

If Sony is banking on today's average gamer being attracted by controllers that are hard to learn, then they've got another thing coming. These days, games like inFamous even has a tutorial section for how to move the camera. And the difficulty level is completely borked, too, even at Hard. They'd better make that thing MORE pick-up-and-play or it's going to tank.

They can't deny what Nintendo did with the Wii because they would look dumb if they did bash it since they are basically copying the Wiimote.

More accuracy = appeals to hardcore gamers because you need better skill to master the precision. Ask any PC gamer why they prefer keyboard/mouse over gamepads when playing FPS games. Its all about the accuracy and responsiveness.
