Sony has revealed that more than 140 million PlayStation 2s have been sold worldwide, as the console marks its ninth anniversary.

First unleashed on the world on 26 October 2000, one in every three US households now owns one of the consoles while 485 development studios have produced almost 10,000 titles for the format.

500 million games have been sold on PS2, while SOCOM has been one of its most successful franchises, racking up 530 million hours of online play - that's 60,000 years of online play.

Happy Birthday, old friend. Try not to gather too much dust.

Sony destroyed everything with the PS2, they got cocky about the PS3. But you know they're starting to build up again.

Your point? There is more then one PS2 on the market, not to mention the hardware failures and bundles. They both play games, ah, never mind..

And it continues to sell... should be a safe enough lead to keep the Wii from stealing its position as the top-selling home console system.

that's impressive, MS should take note, this is what happens when you carry on supporting your console after the new one is released, instead of dropping it like a bad friend like MS did with the xbox

And pretty much no one is making software for it anymore. It would be nice if it got the same support now that it did during its mid-life.

farrell2k

It's an improvement over what we're used to - but you're right, it's still not quite enough. It's hard to fault Sony because they released one of the biggest games of 2007 as the system entered its eighth year, but then they needed to concentrate on developing software to help sell the PS3 and PSP. The "PC/360/PS3" multiplatform strategy got a lot of American third party developers to leave the PS2 behind rather quickly. I have hopes that things will be different for the 360/PS3 generation... There's more power in these consoles than most game developers ever really need, and 360/PS3 games will age VERY well in comparison to the last generations.

Though honestly, I thought the PS2/Wii multiplat strategy would last a bit longer than it actually did.

in my whole life i only have had a slim PS2 for about 5 years, it fell on the floor several times, there is no spring on the disk tray, and yet, it never failed on me. Fun Fact: The PS2 is millions of times the console the PS3 will ever be (and this is coming from a PC gamer)

Sure. Just like a crap load of the PS3's sales were for a cheap blu-ray player.

It depends on how much you like JRPGs and don't play the Xbox/PC. If you don't like JRPGS and have another console then the PS2's benefits are greatly diminished.

Don't kid yourself PS2 has nowhere near the failure amount of 360. My brother still has his fat PS2 and he still uses it as his DVD player on one of his TVs.

I'm the opposite, 2 360s broke on me while 1 PS2 broke. Didn't the PS2 have like a 17% failure rate?

I don't think the next generation should start until one of the home consoles hit the "100 million units sold" milestone. Anytime sooner than that, and at least 2 of the big 3 will never be able to recoup the large amount of costs to entry they initially invested to enter the competitive market.
