Poll Sony Tempest 3d Audio Engine is :- (56 votes)

A fantastic addon to the PS5 18%
A waste of time they should have stuck with Dolby Atmos 20%
A good attempt but should have included Dolby support 11%
A waste of resources that could have been used better elsewhere 29%
Might be great have to wait and see 23%

I really like my sound when it comes to gaming and movies, I've invested in Dolby Atmos setup with 8 speakers (more to come). So the 3d engine in PS5 interested me, but having read Dolby's response I feel they could be re-inventing the wheel some what. A bit like Microsoft Sonic on Xbox One (although they supported Dolby Atmos also).

What say you people?

I wore a headset for their presentation like their blog said and I honestly heard nothing special. Maybe it was the stream I was watching, but I hope it is better than that. I know Dolby called Sony out for falsely claiming Atmos couldn't do hundreds of sounds at once like tempest when it can. I already have Atmos gear, so I kinda wish they went that route. Hopefully it is at least compatible.

I think it's good if they can enhance the audio on existing equipment, instead of expecting everyone to have a Atmos setup. And the fact that they have dedicated hardware for it is awesome, considering that the True audio processing on the GPU requires the dev to lock a cluster of CU's (4 cu's) on the GPU, even if they only need one or two. It's probably why they went for a dedicated CU instead of using the GPU.

Kind of interesting to see the mixed reaction this add-on gets. Personally, I enjoy any improvement, even if maybe it's not the best well-thought one, there needs to be some type of strategy behind making something. It's like that with my line of work as well. I work with audios and background music on a lot of different products/ videos, anything. I personally work with the Depositphotos royalty-free library, which I really recommend, but there are so many choices on there that sometimes I may not choose the most fitted audio. That's why I have many people that I listen to for advice once I settle on a sound, if the reaction is not too positive I keep looking. You need to listen to the majority of the crowd.

I just think Sony should invest even more money to create a 4D sound system like they did with 4D graphics in the PS3 era. We need more Ds!

This is an old thread, but the fact that so many people were confused about what 3D audio was going to be tells me it was an overhyped, misunderstood feature.

“As Long as it sounds good on my 5.1 setup...” when it doesn’t even work properly on a 5.1 setup.
