Sony Computer Entertainment chairman Kazuo Hirai told the Official PlayStation Magazine that Sony is confident the PlayStation 3 will ultimately sell more consoles than the Xbox 360, slamming Microsoft for making consoles that only last in the market for four or five years, while Sony's stay strong for ten years.

Kaz Hirai told OPM that Microsoft's next-generation system, the Xbox 360, is "something that lacks longevity."

After explaining how Sony's video game consoles, the PlayStation, PS2, and PS3, are all committed to ten-year life cycles, while Microsoft's consoles don't reach half that lifespan, he said

"...you do the math."

"Unless things go really bad," Hirai said. "There's no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going to have a higher install base."

Hirai also revealed that Sony doesn't even consider the Nintendo Wii a real competitor to the PS3.

"they're a different world and we operate in our world."

Hirai is an idiot and shouldn't be taken seriously. He's being almost as stupid as Krazy Ken.

And  at not considering Nintendo competition. MS and Sony both better kiss Nintendo's shoes.

Well, them's fightin' words. Both Sony and MS think they will beat each other but either way, they both lose.

I think he needs to pull his head out of his rear. This Christmas season was a slaughter ever since the 360 price drop. The funny thing is, Sony still nearly matched 360 sales in 2008, since they led them from the start of the year up til the month of the price drop. I really wish these guys would get with the damn program.

It's cute watching them fight for second place. It reminds me of two guys (MS and Sony) that like the same girl (Being 1st place) but yet, she is already with someone (Nintendo). :P

As it happens, that girl is a bit of a tramp. She`s already ran out on Nintendo once, and she`ll probably do so again the moment someone drives up with a fancy car.

Sony's already lost crucial momentum and they appear not to understand that fact OR why. It's really pathetic. I literally saw this coming the day of the 360 price drop. Ruh roh. PS3 sales are going in the toilet, they're going to have to cut the price. As they got closer to Christmas, I kept expecting them to see one NPD chart and change it immediately after, like they didn't understand what they were doing wrong or something and had to see the sales figures. Let me put it this way: if they really are taking such substantial losses on every console sold that they can't respond to VERY significant market stimuli, they've already lost. Shut up Kaz. Either cut the price and take the loss or start aggressively reducing the cost of each system. It's their only options.

Well considering PS3 is better quality, has better technology and includes more I guess I kind've agree that the PS3 will last longer than the X360. Seriously who really expects their 360 to last more than 4 or 5 years with the RROD issue alone.

Good to know, while were all playing the xbox 580's the PS3 will just be getting going and outselling the 360!, lol.

Sony "Don't worry lads, we'll start to outsell the 360 just as soon as they stop selling them".

After making that analogy, are you seriously suggesting that Nintendo has somehow cemented the #1 spot and can't be dethroned?

Of course.

Nintendo can't be stopped this gen on the console and handheld front. Obviously I'm talking about sales, games is a totally different story...

How can they claim 10 strong years when the first two were extremely underwhelming by Sony's standards? The best they could hope for is '8 strong years', and that implies that things are going to turn around for the PS3.... um, now-ish.

From pre-launch to today, cows have been focusing on the tech in the PS3 that makes it "future-proof." Pure marketing nonsense. You know what has made the PS2 so long lived? Software support, not superior tech... far from it, considering the tech disparity last gen. Devs have 110+ million reasons to continue supporting the PS2. That and that alone should give every cow pause before holding forth on the potential longevity of the PS3. If the PS3 is a massive sales disappointment over the long haul, do you honestly think that it will enjoy the same lifecycle that the PS2 has? If so... well, delusional is a bit too harsh, but my hat's off to your ability to surrender to the warm bath of wishful thinking. Just add some bubble bath mixture and you're set.

Like you said software support: PS3 has more software support and Sony has more inhouse development that Nintendo and MS combined And I could say the same for X360 as a sales disappointment. PS3 outsold X360 in 2007 and for 2008 X360 and PS3 are essentially tied. So if your trying to imply PS3 as a sales disappointment you'd have to include X360 as well.

The 360 has already exceeded the total number of Xbox's sold. There is no way to spin that number into a sales dissapointment.

I don't think anyone aside from Kaz Hirai has been trying to imply that their tech is somehow going to make them the market leader. The Wii should make it stinkin' obvious, WAY more than the PS2 did last gen. What we've got this gen is more like SNES and Genesis getting trounced by NES.

Except that's not entirely accurate because that doesn't take online into account. And the Wii sort of flies in the face of your point about software, because this stupid console manages to have one of the *****iest libraries on the entire market, not even CLOSE to the level of supremacy that the PS2 enjoyed. It's not diverse, it caters to ONE demographic, and there's more shovelware than consumers know what to do with. People buy crap on the Wii ALL the time and it's going to leave them with a bad taste in their mouths. One can only tolerate so many "Hell's Kitchen"s, "Jillian Michaels", and Wii Music before you just say to hell with it.

The thing is a frickin' enigma. Why don't we quit trying to estimate what makes a console sell and just admit our own ignorance?

For that to be an important admission, lemmings would have to make "10 year lifecycle claims", and even further the 360 would have to be the successor of the most successful console of all time. They have not, and it is not.

let's see what happens in the future sony could be right and a price cut + exclusive games could = sales or sony could be wrong and stay the same.

to say it's over PS3 lost in just 2 years of it's existance is ignorant it's like living in a fish tank in the same present tense for eternity, so because what you see now is what is so you believe what is will always stay as is.

anythings possible in the future it's not edged in stone a price cut and games like Killzone 2 and God of War 3 could change the course of history and make a hole in the time capsule making a different future than the one we expected.

The fact is the only lead m$ has is the 8 mil lead it started with the first year it was out that's not that big a lead that means it hasn't gained much ground on the PS 3 since the PS 3 launched and as everyone has seen every price cut PS 3 has it manages to outsell the 360 so the future is anyones for the taking as time goes by everyone knows prices will drop games will shine or flop money will be spent and money will be lost theres a time for giving and a time for losing and for many as long as quality games come out for those 10 years were happy.

If you're saying that there is still a chance for the PS3 to beat the 360... sure. But let's be clear, the PS3 is still "losing" when everything is said and done unless you are part of that camp that refuses to acknowledge the Wii as a competitor. As for your last sentence... c'mon man, again with that 10 years stuff? If that is what it will take to make y'all happy, better put in for a Ridilin prescription now.

The people likely to by a Wii are definitely not the same type of people likely to by a 360 or PS3. So no, they're not really competing at the cash register.

Hirai is an idiot and shouldn't be taken seriously. He's being almost as stupid as Krazy Ken.

And  at not considering Nintendo competition. MS and Sony both better kiss Nintendo's shoes.

Yeah, they are. The Wii is one of three choices for home console game systems. It is currently eating Sony and MS's lunches. That is the only reason they say they are not competing, and its because they cannot compete with it.

For a lot of 360 people having console problems, ps3 is having endless problems now according to a lot of retailers with endless freezing issues not reading disc to shutting itself down. 'IVE had the same issue of game freezes and it really is pissin me off. This Gen is horrible, however welldone to Wii an Ds aint ha no problems has yet, fingers crossed.

I love the logic in some of his theories We don't consider Nintendo competition- Who are blowing you away, and picking up all the casuals for the console market Microsoft has never had a 10 year console cycle- They only had one console...that was losing them money...where as the 360 is allready making profits...and Microsoft is set to go longer this time around i mean....the rest of his post is just as easy to rip apart..but...hey those were my favorite parts :P

I agree - It would be wise for a company next gen., maybe even Sega :) or someone else to compete in that different VG market and make a bunch of quick cash. Heck, they can make a $90.00 console and sell it @ $250.00 and laugh all the way to the bank too. :P

If that is what it will take to make y'all happy, better put in for a Ridilin prescription now

yes it's still losing now but the future is not written anythings possible as long as people make the right moves.

I will admit for PS 3 or Xbox 360 to reach the wii would be miracolous so I don't go there wii is in aleague of it's own but I guess that's because wiis audience is made of mostly everyone little girls wanting to play cooking mama and imagine babiez little boys wanting to play deblob and punchout wii, grandpas and mas wanting to play wii sport and wii play working males and females wanting to use wii fit and families as a whole wanting to have fun together and the hardcore nintendo fans playing Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Corruption wii has somnething for everyone, while most that get the PS 3 and 360 are gamers who love games with more depths and graphics and would not like kiddie games, these gamers is what the PS3 and 360 are fighting for.

I have a wii and a PS 3 but as far as wii is corcerned they are on a league of their own I would hope that someday PS 3 or 360 can catch up to it but giving the wide margin of wii users I highly doubt it the wii has a larger audience the least wii can hope for is wii losing it's apeal and not being as rich for a month or two.

here is the problem The Wii audience still has people that were part of last gens audience The 360 and PS3 people are basically CORE gamers at this point.....where as the Wii is picking up all the casuals that the PS2 was getting...while adding the non gamers to boot. The Wii is competition...because both Microsoft and Sony need not only the core gamers but the casual audience as well. This whole split market stuff works fine in theory...but at the end of the day.....All 3 companies have and will always want the larger install base...and that right now is The WIi.

Again with the magic of the "10 year Lifecycle" Could the PS3 go on to pass the 360 in sales after MS has moved on to the next-gen? Possibly. The real question though will be "Will anyone really care?" In all honesty, besides P3, what must have PS2 games came out last year that gamers are talking about? This year? I know someone will post a ling "Sony announces 147 PS2 games in 2009", but are they really games most of us care about. Just look at the PS2 coverage on sites like this or GI or EGM, you get little blurb afterthoughts.

The "10 years" is great for families or those just getting into that gen (A $99 PS2 was a great gift in a lot of homes this Christmas) or even some of us Manticores looking to complete our set and pick up a lot of old games cheaply. However, most of us, lets face it are all about the new, the next-gen, the next best thing. That's why we wait for E3 and the other events, so we know the latest games, the next big release. We talk for months about games that are coming out, then after they do, we forget about them in a few weeks, because another new game came out.

Yea...well with Sony's "10 year plan" and MS releasing a new system in 2-3 years, I'd hope so.

PS3 will have a bigger install base, because they keep it lingering, yet MS will make more money in those same 10 years.

I think people are still stuck in the traditional console race mentality where Nintendo is as they always were. If it's a console, then they're automatically competing.

I don't see it that way anymore. Things have changed. Nintendo is going for the casual and non-gamers. Sony and MS are, for the most part, still going after the core gamers. The target audiences are so different, I wouldn't think they'd be significantly eating into one another's userbase. Of course there is some overlap, but by in large, that overlap isn't big enough to say they're directly in competition.

I don't think Sony is saying they won't have a console the next time MS has one ready, I think what they are saying is that they are planning on supporting PS3 as well.
