I agree with Hirai that they're not competing with the Wii.

The people likely to by a Wii are definitely not the same type of people likely to by a 360 or PS3. So no, they're not really competing at the cash register.

jg4xchamp
I agree - It would be wise for a company next gen., maybe even Sega :) or someone else to compete in that different VG market and make a bunch of quick cash. Heck, they can make a $90.00 console and sell it @ $250.00 and laugh all the way to the bank too. :P

here is the problem The Wii audience still has people that were part of last gens audience The 360 and PS3 people are basically CORE gamers at this point.....where as the Wii is picking up all the casuals that the PS2 was getting...while adding the non gamers to boot. The Wii is competition...because both Microsoft and Sony need not only the core gamers but the casual audience as well. This whole split market stuff works fine in theory...but at the end of the day.....All 3 companies have and will always want the larger install base...and that right now is The WIi.

We really don't disagree. The point I've made numerous times here is that MS & Sony are splitting sales and Nintendo has the market to itself so to speak. If there were a Sega this gen with a Waggle controller because lets face it, that is why non gamers or the casuals are enamored with the Wii ( simplicity dontchknow :P ) then "n" & Sega would be splitting those sales so That is why a 4th console would be wise next gen as they could pick up those kind of gamers and earn some healthy cash that "n" has become a big fan of this gen. :P

I think people are still stuck in the traditional console race mentality where Nintendo is as they always were. If it's a console, then they're automatically competing.

I don't see it that way anymore. Things have changed. Nintendo is going for the casual and non-gamers. Sony and MS are, for the most part, still going after the core gamers. The target audiences are so different, I wouldn't think they'd be significantly eating into one another's userbase. Of course there is some overlap, but by in large, that overlap isn't big enough to say they're directly in competition.

VoodooHak
not eating into the other bases, possibly not. They are eating into the potential user base, and they are cost both MS and Sony gobs of money. that to me is the basis of competition.

Yea...well with Sony's "10 year plan" and MS releasing a new system in 2-3 years, I'd hope so.

PS3 will have a bigger install base, because they keep it lingering, yet MS will make more money in those same 10 years.

Mau-Justice
yea m$ needs to get a new console as soon as possible this gen their system has been so full of unreliability hopefully next gen they will get it right.

Wii is defianetly in competition with the 360 and PS3. :|

If it isn't, than DS and PSP aren't in competition.

I don't think the 10-year lifespan thing can be that easily applied to the PS3. It isn't the PS2. It simply doesn't have nearly as much third and second-party dev support.

I don't think Sony is saying they won't have a console the next time MS has one ready, I think what they are saying is that they are planning on supporting PS3 as well.

I never said they weren't, they are just going to be late to the party again.

Microsoft has never had a 10 year console cycle- They only had one console...that was losing them money...where as the 360 is allready making profits...and Microsoft is set to go longer this time aroundjg4xchamp
Is Microsoft REALLY making money from the 360? I mean the multiple lawsuits and RROD repairs had to have cut deep into thier pockets.

RROD repairs that they allready paid for...and they are announcing profits in there financial reports ...so yes...Microsoft is making money...and all the companies end up getting lawsuits of somekind....I mean Nintendo started this gen with a lawsuit.

Uhhhhhhh, some guy from Microsoft said the exact same thing at E3 last year. I sure hope you all jumped at his throat too. Personally, I like this. I thought it was a little arrogant of MS to say that at first but then I realised how good that is for us. It means both MS and SCE are committed to putting out the best console and services available. This just means the competition heats up, and that means that at the end of the day we, as gamers, win.

They weren't late, MS abandoned the first X-Box and jumped in early.

[QUOTE="jasopan"]

Sony Computer Entertainment chairman Kazuo Hirai told the Official PlayStation Magazine that Sony is confident the PlayStation 3 will ultimately sell more consoles than the Xbox 360, slamming Microsoft for making consoles that only last in the market for four or five years, while Sony's stay strong for ten years.

Kaz Hirai told OPM that Microsoft's next-generation system, the Xbox 360, is "something that lacks longevity."

After explaining how Sony's video game consoles, the PlayStation, PS2, and PS3, are all committed to ten-year life cycles, while Microsoft's consoles don't reach half that lifespan, he said

"...you do the math."

"Unless things go really bad," Hirai said. "There's no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going to have a higher install base."

Hirai also revealed that Sony doesn't even consider the Nintendo Wii a real competitor to the PS3.

"they're a different world and we operate in our world."

What do you guys think?

Sorry if posted before or if wrong section.

Breaking news! Sony thinks they will win because their console will last 10 years. This just in!! Gamers like new hardware every 4-6 years as graphics get dated and stale and anything more is rediculous. And now a special report!!! SOny has no idea that they ARE in that real hard time, and their console is slipping.

What does Sony feed these guys? First Ken Kutaragi went insane and now Kaz sounds like a insane man. He does not even base anything off of facts he just throws around the biggest fanboy comments. At least MS's Greenberg may smack talk but he uses facts but KZ just spews insane fanboy talk.

Hirai is an idiot and shouldn't be taken seriously. He's being almost as stupid as Krazy Ken.

And  at not considering Nintendo competition. MS and Sony both better kiss Nintendo's shoes.

Tyrant156
It's not so much about liking to buy a new system every 5 years, it's more about the fact that new systems and technology are an exciting part of this hobby, therefore, if there's a new console out, with games that look/play better or just aren't available or capable of being done on other systems, we get excited and want to play them. If this weren't the case, why to people go on and on about GC1.5 when talking about the Wii or call Wii graphics garbage. Those same graphics were perfectly fine 2 years ago. I'm not saying make a new console for the heck of it, but if the technology is there for a significant improvement, then why not make use of it.

suddenly, it feels like a whooooole bunch of corporate executives are acting like toddlers. Is this what they get paid tons of money to do? disrespect the competition? I'm glad real corporate executives in real industries are more mature. You don't see the CEO of Fox-Searchlight bashing the CEO at Warner Bros. You don't see the Ford CEO bashing the Toyota CEO. Just make the best damn product you can make and market it according to its features. Don't waste our time bad-mouthing everyone else. It won't help you sell more hardware, Sony.

Just MS? Selective memory? Remember, Sony would have been, had intended to be, in alot sooner had it not been for manufacturing and supply chain delays.

They market themselves for a completely different audience. It's a very family-ish product. Everyone can use it, even grandmas. It sure isnt like that with the 360 and PS3.

I think he needs to pull his head out of his rear. This Christmas season was a slaughter ever since the 360 price drop. The funny thing is, Sony still nearly matched 360 sales in 2008, since they led them from the start of the year up til the month of the price drop. I really wish these guys would get with the damn program.BobHipJames
Right so losing by 1.2 million is "nearly matching" the 360?

I agree. They just don't want to bring up the Wii is killing them. I would be surprised if the PS3 got close to the Wii/360 in the end, not sure what this Sony dude is talking about.

Sony is full of it. I mean obviously they will keep the PS3 on the market as long as the PS2 lasted. You've got to think, they've been getting their asses kicked by the competition this whole Gen. What better way to make that money back? Obviously have the PS3 have a longer life cycle than the XBOX 360. We all know in 3-4 years the next XBOX is coming out, and with that the 360 will be discontinued. Sony knows this, we all know this, it's easy for them to just leave the PS3 on the market and make back the moeny they lost with an extra 3-4 year life cycle. Microsoft does not care if this happens. They've already outsold the first XBOX, add together the next 3-4 years of sales...Regardless what happens they leave in a win win situation and move on to the next console.

Sony already knows they're gonna have to milk the ps3 possibly more than they did the PS2, which is why they come up with "In the end we'll do this" blah blah blah.

Microsoft is not known for milking out of date hardware. Computer related, you name it, they're already beyond a good position with the 360. The 360 will last longer than the first XBOX, but with the success it already has, Microsoft will discontinue it once the next console is out.

Wait so 360 is already succesful and Sony has to milk the PS3? But MS has only sold 8 mill more than the PS3...

Are you surprised? Of course they are going to say that. No company would stand up and say 'We will lose'.

Edit: To xsalvioutlawx,

How did Sony 'milk' the PS2? Why would any company discontinue a console that continues to sell very well? Don't mistake support for 'milking'. Forgive me but I'm happy Sony didn't choose to abandon the PS2 when it reached high sales, thats one of the reasons its such a great console. You can hate Sony, but they handled the PS2 perfectly.

Well, the Wii really is a pathetic joke...I think both MS and Sony don't even acknowledge it because it's aimed at a completely different audience (casuals), while 360/PS3 are aimed at the same audience as the PS2, XBox, and Gamecube were (actual gamers). So whoever ends their console life cycle with the most sales (MS or Sony) will probably consider themselves the true winner of this generation. It's really a two-console race. That's where the excitement and "drama" is, between PS3 and 360. That's a real fight.

Nintendo will probably not be as successful next generation unless they can created a console equally as creative.

I really dont care what Hirai, fanboys, or anybody else says. I love my PS3. I enjoy the games on it more than i do with the other systems. Sales and fanboy hatred and nonsense dont affect my enjoyment of the system.

The Xbox was Microsofts first gaming console, so to say that they aren't going to support the 360 for 10yrs is just nonsense.I could see if they had released 2 or 3 consoles and showed a pattern of abandoning them early, but we're judging the lifespan of the 360 by the Xbox's past? I remember when the 360 launched and the Sony execs were calling it Xbox1.5, but now it looks like the tides have turned, only this time Nintendo is quietly leading the pack, followed by the 360, then the PS3. Look,I love my PS3.My Blu rays look stunning on my SONY BRAVIA tv, but I wish these CEOs would stfu.
