"It is still a professional environment, you still need a development kit and you still need to have investment and a team. But it can be a small team," SCEE's head of developer relations Zeno Colaço explained. "We don't see any of the restrictions on the disc-based space being in this space."

Sony is promising a streamlined content pipeline with no concept approval, cheaper tools, shorter QA processes and lower available price points.

"You don't see this happening at Microsoft and you even don't see it happening at Nintendo yet," Subatomic's Ash Monif argued.

Sony going head to head with Apple

Well, Apple already destroyed Sony in every area of the music industry, so I'm not seeing Sony as being good competition against *drum roll* Apples app store made for their iPod devices...

Microsoft would be some good competition, but Sony? No, they already lost once a little while ago.

how could sony even lose yet when they didnt really release an mp3 player? they have the psp but it was mostly advertised as a game system, and using it as an mp3 player sucks because its huge. apple hasnt released a game system because they would be anihilated. so how has sony been destroyed when they havent really entered the same business as apple?

Sony lost the first day apple released the ipod....They had the Walkmen...It was the leading portable cd music player....

Apple beat them to Mp3 players and there's no way Sony can catch up...No matter what they release, no matter what they do, because Apple will just counter what they do with better apps..

I wouldn't be so sure I for one am over the novelty of the ipod. What was amazing in 2001 just isn't so amazing anymore. Plus they break and Apple comes out with a new version every 6 months for you to drop another $400 on. If the PSP Go is small enough I really might considering making the switch.

Well sony is going to pretty much let everything through to the store it seems which is exactly what apples store is doing. So if the same people get on board as apples stuff, then it will be exactly the same for quality. Which will mean that just like the iphone and touch the psp will finally be the multi use system sony wanted it to be.

It almost seems like Sony WANTS to lose all their business ventures.

I wonder if steam could go against the ipod store, and it could be tied to an account.

Really, no matter what Sony does the public will not pay attention to it because iPod is on the radar and the Walkman isn't, despite the fact that Sony's walkman is a good mp3 player.

I suppose this will make sense down the road when the PSP 2 (which will almost certainly have cell-phone functionality) comes out, but right now it's a waste of time. And apparently the guy at Subatomic hasn't heard of Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

They will probably make an API thats very confusing to develop against, and apps will keep getting delayed. :)

It's going to be very late then... the App store has like over 5000 apps, doesn't it? I don't see the PSP App Store catching up anytime soon, and frankly I think there will be limitations. The iPhone doesn't have GPS or an Accelerometer right? Network only limited to Wi-Fi? Yeah that would be fantastic... but it's not something anyone would probably take over with say a 3G network. The PSP Go is stuck in the middle... trying to compete with iPhone and the DS... it's very hard to watch but I don't think the PSP Go will take off like Sony hopes...

Because Sony will be competing for some of Apple's market share. People buy iPods just for the apps they can get, and Sony will try to get those people to buy a PSP instead.

less than 20MB? WiiWare and DSiware go up to 50MB i believe

You hope it doesn't end up like DSiware? You mean like how DSiware has more A, AA games this year than PSP does period this year?

No one in North America buys PSPs for the games they can get, what makes anyone think adding Apps like finding a taxi will some how make that different?

PSP sells what. 100k to 200k a month in NA? it should be on track to sell between 2.5 million and 4 million this year, its pretty much dead to Americans. iPhones sell 4 million plus in a quarter of a year.

I'm happy to see the apps making it to more products though..

And does this mean no games on PSP count anymore? Like Patapon 2 and HOly Badman, and others since they are downloadable? (not direct at the ppl i'm quoting but in general for SW)

So Sony has given up on ever beating the big N and is now going head to head with Apple?

while this will be cool, i don't see it as direct competition. i mean, apple has a much larger userbase, more innovative apps (touch screen/tilt) and a year or two head start.
