Sony unlocks PlayStation 4's 7th CPU core in SDK update
Excellent.
The PS4 was already a gen ahead of the Xbone. This will further push the PS4 to $5,000+ gaming PC power territory.
Will PS4 be 50% more powerful than X1????
It mitigates PS4's CPU issues. The benefits should be similar to XBO's unlocked 7th CPU core.
Good, the cpu needed a boost. Now they need to lower the OS's memory footprint, if they haven't already.

It will help the PS4 to stabilize its frame rates and gpu usage,
now we will see the incoming cows gloating and hyping this up.....

Naw, just added to the cushion of the world's most powerful video game console , the PS4.
The X1 CPU is still more powerful. dat OC!
Incorrect.
A prominent dev on Neogaf said that the PS4 CPU is stronger than the Xbone CPU. Now it's even stronger.
@hrt_rulz01:
The difference is R7-265 (1.89 TFLOPS GPU, close to PS4's GPU) has a higher potential than a down clocked R7-260 (XBO only has about 1.31 TFLOPS GPU).
The X1 CPU is still more powerful. dat OC!
XBO's DX11.X still has serialization multithreaded deferred context into single immediate context issue and PS4 doesn't have this issue.
On PS4, this serialization issue is limited by programmers' DX11 type multithreading designs e.g. brain dead ports from XBO.
On XBO, this serialization issue is fixed with DirectX12 and new game engines designed for DX12 type multithreading designs which also benefits PS4.
@notafanboy: Neogaf lol X1 CPU has a higher clock rate.
So Matt is a lying SONY fanboy?
High clockrate means nothing when the Xbone OS and API are so terrible than it can't be utilized properly. SONY has Mark Cerny, who is smarter than everyone at Microsoft. 1 genius is worth more than 5,000 mediocre engineers.
This is why MS will make an inferior console next gen as well. They can throw their entire $90 billion in cash in R&D and SONY will still outsmart them because SONY has Mark Cerny.

You are forgetting that X1 is soon to get DX12.
i wonder what the core was doing before and if certain features need to be disabled to have access?
not that its a bad thing if certain things are disabled. its nice to have the flexability. good to have access to that 7th core also.
of course existing games wont benefit (unless patched) but future games shoudl benefit.

Soon to get? lol

Can MS fix this issue for future games with DX12?
Makes sense though, the Xbox brand is closer to PC than Sony and MS's consoles so they don't optimize the designs as much.
Saw the edit.

R7-265 (similar to PS4) is faster than 750 Ti, but PS4's CPU configuration is a known bottleneck. PS4's 7th core unlocking should mitigate this issue when programmed in DX12 style multithreading model.
@notafanboy: Well I wouldn't believe that as its the same cpu but the ones is over clocked
Why do you listern to neo gaf
They have had no credit for about 2 years now
The PS4 has a better overall architecture (And software to utilize the hardware) with HUMA and no split memory pool to deal with. The PS4 CPU doesn't have to waste resources constantly moving data from the main pool to the eSRAM pool, since all the available data is running on the 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM. In fact, the PS4 is so much stronger than the Xbone that most devs don't even bother optimizing for the PS4. They make the PS4 bruteforce unoptimized codes and spend all their coders and time on the Xbone version.
The real-world performance favors the PS4 CPU.
The 7th core will just widen the gap.
uh ohh, in be4
That's pretty funny considering you're by far the saltiest person on this site haha.
lol LMFAO, I don't know why but this just killed me. Thx.

Just anticipating the rant that is surely going to follow from this post. :P
@notafanboy:
114 points for a straight 7th CPU scale for PS4. The workloads are compute or GpGPU compute type.
PS; XBO's GpGPU compute is considerably less than PS4.
What the hell is this? Is this real? Sooooooo Sony unlocks the PS4's 7th CPU from an SDK update? Does this make the PS4 noticeably stronger? If so my mind has been blown if true! And Sony takes their console making very seriously and more seriously than I thought! So they unlocked the hidden potential of the PS4 huh?!
Pretty funny that MS feels the need to make large announcements about a change like this. Sony just drops the update.
Sony have always been doing these quite updates like psp over clocking abilities and what not. To be honest its kind of annoying because it leaves allot of things to speculating.
