Yeah, I agree. They're too frequent and most add minor features. A photo gallery for PS3? Really, Sony? Quarterly updates at this point would be fine.

About two days ago if I recall correctly. Also, I don't mind updates, I just would like more beneficial updates that make the system better, as opposed to just minor updates that don't do anything much but are a nice bullet point to add to the box.

I agree 100% everytime I go to play a quick game I have to sit and wait for 30 minutes for an update...it wouldn't be as bad if it was like the 360 which takes seconds

download the update on your PC. It literally takes about 2 minutes max. And this is on my parents crappy internet connection which goes 2megabits.

If these updates went quickly, I ould have less of a problme with them. This last one took 45 minutes to download and install. That is time that I can't play games, and my video game time is limited (I have a job and family). Unless there is something unstable in the firmware (see v2.40) I would rather they just give us impactful quarterly updates.

And for those who are going to tell me its just my interent connect, get a better one: My XBOX360 downloads things lickty split, and I have no lag or problems onlnie gaming with either system...its only downloading on my PS3 that is the equivalent of bamboo shoots under the fingernails...expalin that one!

I'm going to start doing this as well because that's my main complaint. The game updates are quick for me, but system updates and any PS store downloads take ages and my connection is faster than average.

Still not as nice as the xbox 360 updates :P Bigger updates, takes 30 seconds, don't have to do download, then go through the install. Does it all extremely fast.

We really shouldnt have to do that. If they are going to update frequently, then the least they could do is make downloads (and the network) alot faster.

Why is everyone complaining about updating their PS3? Sell it if it's such a hassle to download an update that takes a few minutes at most to download.... >_>

You really shouldn't need to have to go through all that jsut for an update. A minor one also. Even when xbox did their big NXE update it really only took 2 mins.

If you're waiting half an hour you need to get yourself a real Internet connection.

No kidding. These people that are complaining must have terrible connections. I mean, mine isn't the best around, yet I still download stuff off PSN (including updates) at lightning speed :D

I don't mind the updates. To me they haven't been that frequent. But it can be overwhelming if you have afew games and they get updates every so often. It will feel like you are dealing with updates on a regular basis. This is why i hope both MS and Sony start making devs finish their games before releasing instead of doing DLC at a later date to fix it. I think, to some degree, devs are relying on it too much. I also totally agree with those comparing the PS3 updates to the 360. There's no good reason why PS3 can't download and install at the same time while also letting you do other tasks if the 360 can. Its a matter of the OS. If that wasn't the case, we'd have a lot less to complain about.

It all depends on the update. This last one was small and quick, others have not been. For example: (not a OS update but...) I had to download the Socom patch a couple weeks ago. It was a massive 500mb and took 45 minutes to download on my wired connection. Maybe that would have gone faster downloading from Sony's site on my PC. But I doubt it would have made that big of a difference.

I really didn't need a better Photo Gallery. I didn't care much for the "Internet Search" button, the scroll bar that tells me "What's New", or the new arrangement of friends on your list. However, there ARE things I LOVED!! Divx and WMA compatibility, a better web browser, playlists for mp3s, trophies, Video downloads in the store with better design for navigation, Home, Remote Play, increased friend list threshold to 100, Power Save settings, and much more that doesn't just pop into mind.

The writer seemed overly opinionated and somewhat cynical to me. To say you admire Sony's commitment with frequent updates and then disregard their importance is also quite, well, dumb. The point is that the PS3 is growing as a console. Before this generation, no console has done that, and now we're complaining about it?

I also don't agree with the writer of the article AT ALL when he says that previous consoles only released if they deemed themselves to be bug free. I am SO happy that today I don't have to blow into my NES cartridges and tap the reset and power buttons repeatedly to make my games work, that I don't have to keep buying peripherals to make my Sega Genesis better, or more recently, that I don't have to send my system to Microsoft and wait for over 3 weeks cause my 360 gave me a Red Cirle light which happened to so many people we gave it a name "Red Ring of Death".

There was another article that a friend pointed out to me that pointed out Sony's shortcomings for 2008. It said that one of the things Sony should do is get rid of Home. On the same day, Gamespot eported to us that, from users alone, Home generated $1,000,000 by week three and that's not including the fees that companies are paying to advertise in the space. I bring this article up to make this point:

When someone is offered something for free (as an option) and they say "No", you can start disregarding any of their future opinions.

it's still alot and i mean alot slower than xbox live updates, call of duty i have for both, and the update for ps3 took like a minute and the one for 360 took literally less than a second, not the mention the ps3 also has to go through the install process. It doesn't really bother me, but knowing that it should be much faster is sort of annoying, as there really is no excuse for why it takes longer, especially game update downloads.

The only probably I have with the updates is that they can take 15+ mins to load. If they were quicker, I wouldn't care. Sometimes I want to just jump on the PS3 and play for about an hour, but if I have to wait 15-20mins for an update it kills my play time. I usually end up playing a XBLA game whileI wait. XBox 360 updates usually take less then 2mins and never longer then 5mins.

i remember when i first got my ps3 and had to install mgs4, that was the slowest game from opening to playing i will ever encounter in my life. install, install update, open a konami account, install another update for online.

System updates only occur every month. They might be minor, but they address certain issues we're probably not aware of and might cause problems later.

This really a concern?...Free updates WHO CARES! and as for the waiting, so you play your PS3 every sec of the day of the year of your life? YEH-NO....while its downloading make a post on gamespot, read something or get something to eat...before you know it, its done. You do more time wasting on these boards...hell, while your making these posts it could be downloading. Always something else to do. While they are frequent, you don't have to get them.

I will Tho the 360 updates are never no more than 2 minutes, The PS3 firmware updates are not always that bad. 2.6 only took 10 minutes to download.

[QUOTE="caseypayne69"][QUOTE="bez2083"]Yeah, I agree. They're too frequent and most add minor features. A photo gallery for PS3? Really, Sony? Quarterly updates at this point would be fine.PSP107
My wife loved the photo gallary.

so the photo gallery is for chicks? anyway my problem with these updates is that you cant sign in on the PSN unless u update. Like someone said, minor and usless updates are stupid.

I agree. If only the updates worked by having two types of updates, crucial and recomended. Crucial ones would be like 2.40, etc, and add needed stuff like Home or Trophy support. Recommended ones wouldn't be needed to play online but would add stuff like codec support and photo galleries.

Why is everyone complaining about updating their PS3? Sell it if it's such a hassle to download an update that takes a few minutes at most to download.... >_>_Brennan_
Yeah, no, try a half hour or more. And i have the best internet available from my provider too.

Hey, I have no problem with free updates. Even if they are minor ones, they still allow the system to be better.

So now people are complaining about free updates that add more functionality? Good god, there really is no pleasing some people.
