[QUOTE="ShaineTheNerd"]If 100,000 people buy the PS4 without a PS+ Subscription, that's a 6 million dollar loss. Probably shouldn't try to be cheaper than the One if that's your sacrifice. ShaineTheNerd

6 million is a lot yes. But to a company as big as Sony or Microsoft it's not all that much. Especially considering it's not just a loss, it's an investment.

That's a good point. But, look at the 360. 77+ million consoles were sold, but there are only around 40 million Live members, right? If the PS4 saw those exact numbers, because some people have no plans to purchase a membership, would that mean a loss of (30m*60=)1,800,000,000? That's a lot of money. I guess more market share means more Sony published games.

You also have to account to console revsions which are usually able to be sold at a profit about halfway through the generation.

PS3 and Xbox 360 are like 1 million+ apart with 360 in lead. Use PSN+ numbers to determine how the PS4 will do with online. Actually nevermind, because the results would not be the same since PSN MP won't be free this time.

I used XBL because I haven't a clue what PSN numbers are. I expect PS+ numbers to soar since, as you said, MP isn't free, but there will still be a lot of people not paying. Seeing that that's what Sony's depending on -- PS+ sales -- that's not too good. I'm no Donald Trump, but it doesn't sound good.

hopefully the PS+ subscriptions and the 1st party titles make up for that, otherwise Sony doesn't have many assets to sell before their liability meets their assetts

They can at least count on the millions of CoD fans to pay for online.

That's true, but if Sony sales what they expect (5 million consoles the first year) and a 10th of people don't buy PS+, that's 30m lost. And what if people do buy PS+? 60-50=10. That's still 10 dollars lost per sale.

$60 is a fraction of they were losing on the PS4. They'll probably break even on most consumers at launch considering many will buy extra controllers, buy multiple games, subscribe to PSN+, make some online purchases etc. Both Sony AND Microsoft are probably selling their consoles at a lose.

That's for sure, lol. PS4 is where it's going to be at for COD. Cheaper system + cheaper subscription cost + redesigned controller for improved FPS = Sony Win

Perhaps I'm missing something, but why are people saying they lose $60 per PS4 sold?

If you buy 1 game, you think Sony gets $60? Isn't the reality like they get 10 dollars per game sold, regardless of the developer/publisher? Even if they sell a PS+, you think that $50 is pure profit?

Sony always amazed me with how much they are losing and still can keep going . I am planning on getting a PS4 soon after launch if there are no malfunctions of major problem with the hardware,

If the game giveaways with PSN+ are as good as people say they are that's quite a bit of encouragement not to buy games.

$60 loss per console? Thats not good at all considering thats just the "cost of sales"

Once you take into account everything else like distribution, marketing, wages, depreciation....the loss becomes quite substantial and they will need to sell alot more games and online subscriptions to come out on top.

Every game sold does not = $60-$70 in their pocket as they will only see a small portion of that and even then it has its own indirect costs associated with the sale.

Sony is taking a big risk here once again. Considering these consoles are weak as piss, i doubt they will have the long term life of the previous generation.

Microsoft have learnt their lesson and are breakeven or might even profit from every console sold.

no. Xbox1 will be breakeven or profit. PS4 will lose $60 on every console, they are taking a risk in being a loss leader.

For a company with negative current assets, this is big risk IMo.

I'm not so sure they won't be taking a loss themselves. Despite being weaker they're spending just as much if not more on their APU as Sony is. And I expect that $500 price to drop fairly quickly after they get their clock cleaned early on.

But it looks like this also doesnt take into account indirect costs associated with the console production.

However they are off to a better start than Sony, who will need to sell more games, more subscriptions just to breakeven.

This is probably why microsoft wants to appeal to more than just gamers, as doing so is not profitable.

So you are saying the PS4 won't be proftiable for Sony? $60 is nothing once the production cost go down it will be pure profit from the start before adding PS+ and any game to the equation.

It's not that big of a loss compared to the PS3's, and the risk isn't as big this time around since there isn't any format war. There's a lot of ways Sony can break even and make a profit or at least minimize their loss like the PS+ subscriptions, PS4 accessories, etc. They'll be fine.

How about reading the OP again: "According to what Eurogamer has heard from well-placed sources, Sony is expecting a $60 loss on each PS4 sold.
This was quickly denied by Masayasu Ito, Sony Japan's executive." Again, not $60. I already made a post about this back on around page 3. Jeez, seems people just read the OP and not even read through the whole thread.

Source? do you know the PS+ margins? do you know the game sales margins? also, once again, $60 doesn't include indirect costs. They might be profitable one day, but XBOX will be more profitable. Anyways lets let the financial statements do the talking....

If 100,000 people buy the PS4 without a PS+ Subscription, that's a 6 million dollar loss. Probably shouldn't try to be cheaper than the One if that's your sacrifice. ShaineTheNerd
and if they all buy a game?

Irrelevant since Sony said that number was false. You play financial statements while I play games.
