I personally find it hilarious that Microsoft has found themselves in such a hole in terms of market position that they and their followers think that leveraging 10 or 15 year old consoles is going to somehow leverage relevance in an industry that has successfully grown larger than Hollywood being cyclical/generational. I would completely understand wanting to change the rules from a strong leadership position, but barely scraping past 30M is not the place you should be pushing a paradigm shift from.

All this talk about the end of generations is coming from one small but vocal fanbase. It seems like every generation, they invent new ways of making everyone else say "Get a PC already".

I bet it's atleast 2-3 years off anyway. There is 0 point in worrying about it.

@Shewgenja: I'd rather have a console that functions like a PC than the PC. I enjoy Xbox live and everything it offers me. If MS can successfully launch their version of a Steam Machine I'm all for it. a game library that just works with every version of Xbox system MS releases. Basically concentrating on the game functions of a PC with out the hassle and price of PC, on my TV in my living room.

@xxyetixx: How are you going to bitch about the cost of a PC when you are willing to buy a 500 dollar console every four years and 200 dollars in Live fees at said iteration?

$700 will build a decent PC. You can even use the same controller if you want.

@Shewgenja: I don't have to buy a console every 4 years. If I upgrade I can choose to upgrade at my convenience or upwards of 8 years from the release of X1X. As I'm assuming 4 years from now whatever Xbox will be released Xbox One S discontinued X1X the min spec system then 4 years later buy the next system as X1X is being phased out, as long as MS continues this forward/backward compatible direction. Live is also a service I've been paying for since 2006 I have no issues with that.

Don't sit there an pretend like a $700 PC is gonna net me the same experience a X1X is cause it won't. Especially if I'm hooking that PC into my TV and wanna all the features X1X offeres i.e. UHD player.

@xxyetixx: The UHD player in the S Model is corn-riddled water shit. And yeah, actually, I would take PCs games library over the XBox in the space of a mosquito sneeze.

Almost every graphics card made past the year 2015 has an hdmi port on them. There is no "difficulty" in pc gaming. You can control the whole thing from a DiNovo Mini which is no larger than an Xbone controller.

Won't be anytime soon, imagine how much it would cost to sell a console more powerful than x1x... truth of it is, it's a matter of technology trends more so than companies' decision, tech isn't advancing as fast as it used to, so there's no much point in it.

@Shewgenja: see I wouldn't computer games are trash that's why "master race" are the biggest port beggers. I don't care about WOW, RTS games, or RPG's.

Once Nov gets here I'm gonna be playing COD:WW2 for basically a year ? With small spurts of other games in between. Hell since Modern Warfare remastered came out I only recently stopped playing that to get a little Injustice 2 and Friday the 13th time in.

My gaming needs are low ? I got my Elite Controller which I love, my friends that I play with, and COD. I don't game like I use to, and I don't even play COD as often as I use to. Hoping that's because I didn't really enjoy the future crap yet still sunk crazy time into them.

@Shewgenja: I was wondering do you only buy PS exclusives for your PS4? If a PC is as easy as a console and the experience is the same then you probably buy every multiplatform game on PC to have the better version and probably cheaper, right?

@killered3: the Xbox controller doesn't need improvement, especially the Xbox Elite controller. With digital sales being more and more relevant generationless is the way to go with consoles next evolution. I hope MS does it and continues it. If Sony doesn't that's fine and they can keep the people that think like you do and want to start over and buy all new everything ?

We don't "start over," we buy new and add to our collection. That's what I do. I don't throw anything out just because it's no longer supported. That's why backwards compatibility isn't an issue to me. It's nice but not a deal maker.

I own GTX 980 Ti and it caused BSOD multiple times a few months ago with Star Wars Online. It took a driver update to fix the problem. Other problems was WIndows update, causing NVIDIA drivers update which caused a few BSODs. NVIDIA's submitted drivers to MS was buggy. This is why I maintained a dissimilar gaming PC with Radeon HD GCN card.

I can self service my own and my relative's PCs. Some of my relatives owns Apple's MacOS X based machine.

@Shewgenja: I think Microsoft has are realistic visit that what Sony visions for the future of gaming.

Let's he honest Sony has a dead man walking in this case.

IMO, like I said multiple times, the future is the Steam Machine model. BC consoles that can behave PC-like.

PC and Consoles are starting to converge, and Microsoft is the only company to be that position, Sony, Valve is not.

If Microsoft's vision is right, then expect the decline of open PC Gaming and the irrelevance of traditional consoles to a certain extent, where all games in the future will go to the Windows Store, through UWP, and pretty much ignore Steam.

Nope. This is a company that has control over Windows and Xbox.

This is the same company that threw SteamVR, Oculus Home under the bus through DirectReality, by having all VR HMDs booting into their own platform (Windows Mixed Reality) than Valve's. The same concept of Monitors, VR HMDs will recognise the Windows OS and Windows 10 will provide a UI for VR HMDs through Windows Mixed Reality through OS control.

What happens when Windows 10 and Xbox finally merge, where future all Xbox games work on PC and future UWP Windows Store PC games work on Xbox?

That's the future. It's been like this for a while.

Why are you comparing Zune to this? they're different positions.

Microsoft owns Windows and Xbox, with recent trends, I see them merging and having Xbox simply becoming a locked down Windows 10S-like machine and becoming part of the PC gaming spectrum. Xbox consoles in the future is simply be part of a configuration of a Gaming PC. Like I said, With CShell, where the OS simply adapts to a different UI depending on the input and screen size. I see a future where, PCs will have a Xbox UI to play UWP games. and I see Xbox having a gaming focused desktop-like UI, and through UWP, which for developers, they no longer have to think about targeting PC or Xbox. They target both.

Which in turn does give more power to the Windows Store/Windows 10 S, because it will provide the unification.

I don't see how you don't think this is disruptive tech, because it impacts Valve directly and potentially Sony.

An Xbox console that can adapt to a desktop-like UI with M&K support, A PC that can adapt to a Xbox Console UI, UWP for scaling games onto Xbox and PC, Windows 10 S PCs can become Xbox consoles.

That actually is mostly how it works now and steam is still more popular. You're overestimating Microsoft's capacity to overtake a market where there are already much better competitors.

1) these are bad things. These are exactly the sort of thing that has galvanized people against MS for decades. We should not be "proud" of their ability to crush smaller companies that offer variety and - sometimes superior - alternatives.

2) I have no idea why we are counting MS's VR endeavors as a win against others yet - we have no evidence that they will do well yet.

PS5 can't come out soon because it will alienate PS4 pro buyers. I'm sure it will be at minimum 3-4 years off from PS4 Pro launch so at least another 2-3 years from now. By that time, Xbox will have had the lead for quite some time, and then after PS5 comes out, Xbox releases the next Xbox with in probably a year after. Sony's in a pickle.

Not to mention that PS5 will probalby have zero compatibility with PS4 so there won't even be games on it at launch and for the first year or more.

I'm going to take the wait and see approach. If it's going to be a new gen entirely, so long as it plays my PS4 games, I really don't care. If they pull another late model PS3/PS4 approach with no BC, then it won't be a system I buy at launch. If PS5 allows PS4 game BC, then I may get one at launch for the inevitable 4k with proper HDR output for my TV.

why do people bother with backwards compatibility? thats what ur previous system is for... play old games. Useless shit.

@GiveMeSomething: It's for those of us wanting only one system hooked up per company. One PlayStation and one Nintendo are plenty sufficient.

@daniel_su123: LMFAO! So the loser company this gen is the one dictating the future? Gotcha lol

When MS gets involved, it's lights out for AMD's Mantle, 3DFX's Glide, RealAudio, RealVideo, Netscape, Lotus 123, WordPerfect and 'etc'.

1. Not much different to Apple's iOS and Google's Android built-in apps bundles.

@ronvalencia: I'm saying we shouldn't be celebrating the ability of a company to wipe other businesses from the face of the earth and go unchallenged. That's not to our benefit.

Sony is selling so many units, so why the rush?

8th gen was rushed and look where it got us. They were only like a year away from a 14nm FinFET design.
