While I do like Splinter Cell, I think MGS is better. I like the gameplay in MGS more because it feels more fun for me. The storyline and characters are also amazing.

I haven't played either of them yet, I suppose I haven't lived ;). Well I did play Splinter Cell ONCE and got bored about 5 minutes after starting the game.

You definitely owe it to yourself to go on ebay and purchase a used copy of MGS right now... even after 9 years it's better than most games out there, it was way ahead of its time.

MGS is waaaay better. Kojima basically invented the genre and his games cannot be surpassed. Great story, gameplay, graphics.... what's not to like?

I do like both but I easily Prefer MGS over SC because of the story characters and the gameplay is pretty good.

Splinter Cell for sure. Metal gear has a great story but a HATE the camera in it. Splinter cell has amazing gameplay, gadgets and has a more thrilling feeling.

[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]MGS has a very compelling story and great characters.

When it comes to gameplay. Thief owns them both. They both should be referred to as "Tactical Espionage Action" because neither of them really scream "STEALTH" to me.

In Theif, you get into a fire fight, your dead.
AdobeArtist

Tactical Espionage Action - I LIKE that!! It fits perfectly :)

My choice goes to Splinter Cell.

The 1st game to use environement shadows not just as a graphical enhancement but as an integral part of the gameplay, avoiding detection in darkness. Plus using analog stick sensetivity to control speed, which in turn controlled noise made that could also lead to detection. Those to me made the best stealth gameplay ever.

Then there's the sheer diversity of character action. When sneaking and grabbing a character, that alone lead to interrogations, forcing to a retina scanner, using as a human shield. Then there's split jumping, zip lines, rapelling, charging window from a rapel, lock picking, hacking computers and key pads, sniping, disarming mines, spying on a conversation with the laser mic.

When it comes to stories, they all really DO feel like an amazing Tom Clancy novel, with plots that feel like real world political situations loaded with intrigue, and great twists that vary the game missions and objectives. Kojima IS good, but - and I honestly mean no offense by this - he can't compete with Clancy.

No offense, but Tom Clancy is an arrogant conservative blowhard, seriously. Good writer, but too full of himself, always trying to make his stories be dramatic and cool in real-world situations. Kojima doesn't need to try, because the larger-than-life characters and situations fit perfectly with the larger-than-life reality that he creates.

I have to go with SC, mostly because I hated the way snake moved around, it was to much of a "boxy" run for me and even when he walked. None of it seemed natural to me. SC just seems so much more fluid to me.

i like splinter cell better myself, i cant stand the way mgs games play. bad camera angles, the way you cant move if youre in iron sight, or the way you cant aim if you want to move and shoot at the same time

the stories are always way nicer, but i personally dont play stealth games for a good storyline

MGS hands down.

SC has sloooooooooooooow and tedious gameplay.

I had to force myself just to get about 3/4 of the way in SC PT.

splinter cell has much better stealth and much better online, even the story is getting better. I could never get into Metal gear solids story. For a game that appears to look like a realistic stealth game, it has some pretty cheesy moments. Like snake blabbing on about a pistol in front of eva in MGS3, the dead guy who has killer bees.....WTF?

MGS is story-focused, but the gameplay isn't very good.
Splinter Cell is gameplay-focused, but the stories aren't very good.
Thief is both story-focused and gameplay-focused. Thief is the king of the stealth genre. :D

Planeforger
correct, thief is the best stealth game around, why isnt there a new thief game coming out??????

kojima did not invent the genre, why does everyone call MGS the first 3D stealth game? Tenchu game out before MGS and was a great game, to bad the new ones are terrible.

Splinter Cell plays a lot better than MGS. I think all these people saying "MGS by far" have never played a SC game. Why do you think Kojima stole the camera from SC for Subsistence? Wake up.

Splinter Cell or MGS?

Splinter Cell; Ubisoft does an amazing job for Microsoft in the last-gen, putting out amazing XBox game and have crappy PS2 port

MGS; exclusitivity on PS2/PS3 ( well didnt it appeared on xbox too? )
sunnystarz

My vote goes for MGS.  It's gameplay isn't as bad as people seem to think it is, and the cinematics are just that.  SC never really did it for me, can't put my finger on what it was though.

Oh, and MGS was also on Gamecube.  Twin snakes.  Which was a pretty good remake of MGS.

I like Splinter Cell the best.

I hate how MGS plays, and the fact that it's a Japanese developer often coes through WAY too much... some stupid crap happens in those games.

1. Its the same camera as in Splinter Cell:|

2. You can in Portable Ops and MGS4, you can only lean in MGS2 and 3.

3. Yes you can, ever since MGS1 you can move and shoot at the same time.

Splinter Cell=More realistic stealth (although I doubt any spy in the world uses the split jump)

MGS=More fun (you can choose whether or not you want to kill everything or sneak by, you are a special forces soldier after all, not a spy)

No one said MGS was the first 3D stealth game, but to claim Kojima didn't invent the genre shows how little you know. The very first stealth game ever created was Metal Gear in 1985, unless you wanna count running away from the ghosties in Pac Man stealth.

Ok lemmings...So why do you want MGS4 on xbox360 again?  No cow ever asked for Splinter Cell on PS3 yet we still got it, and we still could care less.  After this thread I should never see talk of MGS on xbox360 ever again...but somehow I know all lemmings are liers and any of them that have played MGS knows it distroys Splinter Cell in every way imaginable.

Have fun with Splinter Cell on 360 Xbots,  I'll be enjoying the ever so epic game adventure MGS4 when I get my PS3...but don't worry lems, Splinter Cell is a better game anyway right?  lol.

I am a gamer....in the end, I get my kicks out of actually simply PLAYING the game....therefore my vote goes to splinter cell... Take away MGS' excellent plot and all you're left with is, is a classical pac man game in 3D which plays a bit rusty and doesn't actually do much for the claim it makes as "ESPIONAGE"......Splinter cell does the whole Espionage thing better... The only reason I like MGS is for it's well thought out storyline...but in the end, gameplay is what I opt for. It's more memorable to me that way. XD

MGS 3 without the plot and alerts = pure action. Pac man? You have to be joking.

IMO both of these games are boring. I guess I find splinter cell to be not quite as lame as mgs. Its a close call though, they are both pretty lame. I just cant get into the whole stealth bore fest. Not knocking anyone that likes these games, I know they are very popular, I am just expressing my side.

Quite the contrary, I'm very serious...it's basically the same concept....you're in an enclosed limited quarter (until you move on to the next quarter which takes some loading time) run around the enemy, try to avoid him and progress,...or just kill him and move on o.o...you can pretty much kill anyone who comes running toward you.....I agree with you on one point though...IT IS ACTION....it's whole Idea of tactical Espionage is BS Snake's movements are just overly rough and too careless for a stealth game....let's face it....this game is what it is because of one thing only, and that's it's superb story line...without it MGS would just be another failure of a game.....In the end it still doesn't do the stealth gameplay as well as Splinter Cell does.... But to each his own. I have shared my thoughts on this.

Many ppl I know and have posted here say they play MGS for it's gameplay, you are just fooling arond by saying one just runs around the enemy in one area.

Even if some say SC is more realistic that doesn't mean MGS isn't better.

Metal Gear Solid is and always will be the greater of the two.
