Spore is way overhyped. Can we discuss what the big deal is?

I really don't get it.

So if someone would be so kind to tell me why Spore is getting this much hype?

I'll sum it up in one word:

Freedom.

You either look it and nod your head understanding, or you'll never be convinced it's anything special.

because you're in total control, its bright, colorful, and appealing, it's a new idea, nothing like the generic shooters and sports games that breed like mutated rabbits

Its a blank canvas game anyone whos creative and enjoys the freedom to create what they want will more or less understand why people want the game.

In short think of the Sims and Sim City and now glue them together.

Tell me about it, it's just some crappy maze game made over 20 years ago.

its like the ultimate god game. its sims mixed with sim city mixed with civ IV.

not sure what wii version will be like

You can explore an entire universe, with its own unique galaxies, and its own unique planets, with your own ship in real-time, none of that Mass Effect cutscene crap.

That's enough for me to hype the game, without even mentioning the entire evolution aspect of it and playing God.

Thats what a normal person would have done instead of creating a topic on a forum, typing spore into google isnt as hard as you think.

Will Wright + Ability to create your own race with MASSIVE creative control + awesome art style = enough reason to hype.

A game were you can customize your own race, armour, buildings, vehicles, plants, planets and so on to create your own little civilisation and explore a sandbox universe populated by other races created in the same way.

What is there not to be excited about?

Calling Spore "ambitious" is doing a severe injustice to the game. Whereas many other games this year have been noted under similar terms Spore easily outdoes all of these games in terms of what it is trying to achieve. Whereas most games only offer the tiniest amount of history to be covered, be it a world war or a single period in history, Spore ousts them all with a design so grand that it would be theoretically impossible to go farther. Covering the entire life cycle of a single species from microbe to interstellar race Spore charts your progress as prey to predator and coloniser to invader, from inception to destruction Spore sets itself apart by presenting a million different possibilities to the player and a space setting so large that Will Wright himself has said that there are "over half a million different stars, each one having its own planets, more than anyone could visit in a lifetime."

... Is this person serious? The Spore editor allows you to easily assemble, paint and animate a creature with no prior experience and use it in a game world to build your own civilisation. If you are honestly wondering why people do not simply use a 3D modeller for maximum design freedom then you have not understood what Spore is about at all.

I already know plenty about the game, but I wanted a personal perspective hence, the forum post. Just to clarify.

Actually, I don't see THAT much hype for it. I don't see hermits making thread after thread hyping Spore like cows did for teh MGS4...AvIdGaMeR444

Spore and LBP are similar looking to me, you create your own "world" then you watch the characters do whatever..with no point other than to create a character/level over and over again. Don't see the end point at all for either, seems pretty empty. hopesfall2own

Oh, but there is an overall objective in Spore if you choose to attain it. ;)

I was only moderately excited for Spore before. After reading this, I totaly want to play it.

Empty? Spore is four different genres all rolled up into one. If Will Wright can pull it off, it will be the most groundbreaking game ever made aside from maybe Pac-Man or Pong. You know, the games that started gaming. And even if he doesn't, it still remains one of the most ambitious ever attempted.
