With the super success of the Wii, I think launching a new console in 2011 would be a mistake as I just don't see the casuals who bought the Wii in droves are going to race out to buy another console so soon - maybe 2015 or there about. :P

I kind of agree with MS & Sony not really having a huge impact by introducing their new control methods though I'm interested in trying them out when launched. :)

I dunno, just my thought here - What ya think ?

The Story.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/21/square-enix-head-predicts-new-wii-in-2011-says-motion-impact/

The new motion controllers for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3are likely to make big appearances at this year's Tokyo Game Show. While both Microsoft and Sony are attempting to take away some of Nintendo's mindshare with its new controllers, Square Enix head Yoichi Wada believes neither company will be truly successful. "Present game machines already have a lot of functions: they are a network terminal, a Blu-ray or DVD player, and a gaming machine. Compared to these three pillars, the [new motion] controllers are quite limited, so the impact may be small," Wada told the Financial Times.

Wada also believes that the three platforms will start looking more like each other by the year 2011, when he believes Nintendo will release the fabled successorof the Wii. The system will add features found on the PS3/360, and may also introduce a brand new controller. It'll certainly be interesting to see what moves consumers when an HD Nintendo system exists concurrently with motion-enabled Microsoft and Sony systems.

What a way to start the morning off just right. Reading an article about something Kotick or Wada said lol. As for the Wii isn't a little too soon for a new Wii. I can see a successor to the DS sort of butnot the Wii.

With such a big lead I think it would be a bad idea for ninty to start over from scratch. They would need to make games for the system that justify it's existence and then the install base would be small again.

There is no reason to replace the Wii this soon.

Thanks for the info, but I couldn't give a crap what Wada or Square Enix say anymore.

Bitter, much?

I still believe that the new gen will start in 2013 or 2014 and the first one to release the new console will be MS then Nintendo. 2011 its too soon.

Won't happen unless the Wii drastically fails in 2010. With Nintendo's Fall 2008-Spring 2009 blunder, and a possible User-generated content focus inside the company until Wii Music and Little Big Planet flopped may mean that the Wii mania is permanently over. Nintendo can start it again, but they have to be more careful, and produce a constant stream of games with actual content. (It's ridiculous that Brawl has more music than Wii Music O_o Then again, Brawl is one of the most content-rich games this gen. Also, I don't mean content in the "more levels" sense, but in the "Pipe World/Giant Land" or "Prime 3's planets" sense. Experiences.)

No difference really than any other gen, around 5-6 years.. Besides, if they release a new console is Nov. 2011, thats still over 2 years away.

Who said they were going to replace it? The new system might be a complimentary product aimed at a different market.

1.The DS did have a succesor this year, the DSi. I know that isn't what you meant, but it will have DSi exclusive games, so it is basically a new handheld with backwards compatibility.

2.I kind of agree with you. Nintendo systems usually last about 6 years. If one releases in 2011, then it will be five, but I think it is neccessary to compete with the PS3/360's hardware and games.

The Wii, however, isn't. CEO of SquareEnix or not, this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. He'd clearly rather compete than win. Nintendo hasn't been trying to compete. They've simply been trying to win.

It was sneaky, but the DS did have a successor this year. Under the hood, the DSi is far superior to the DS Lite. It's just a slow phase-in, like Gameboy to Gameboy-Colour.
