I assume when this game is fully complete, and ready to buy, it'll run on the latest consoles out at the time.

The current consoles could probably run it now, on low settings and reduced resolution. SC won't go to consoles because Sony and MS have far too restrictive and expensive patching policies and Chris Roberts will never let anyone else have any say over his baby.

I don't even want to think about the backlash a console port announcement would cause among backers. The refund claims would devastate them.

Why would there be a backlash? Obviously you only announce a console version once the PC version is released.

Let's see

  • It was announced as a PC game.
  • It's been stated multiple times by Chris Roberts and other high ranking C.I.G. staff that it's a PC exclusive and would never go to console.
  • It's been funded to the tune of $122 million by people who want the game on PC. How many people do you think would demand their money back as they have not paid for a multiplatform game? Even more so when you take some of the original backers who have contributed $10k+ to the project.
  • Not a penny of the crowd funding has come from people wanting it on console.
  • It would need to be seriously scaled back for it to be properly optimised to run on any console. It's not even properly optimised to run well on lower end PC's yet

That's only scratching the surface of the furore that would ensue if they announce a console release.

I'm not one of the people who would complain about it, I'm actually expecting to see some form of Squadron 42 released to multiplatform.

Star Citizen is a very different monster from Squadron 42 though, which would cost a hell of a lot of money to keep updated they way that C.I.G. plan to. Additionally they would need to conform to Sony's and MS's rules and let them have overall say on what they can patch and when. None of that will ever happen. It doesn't really have anything to do with hardware that will be available in the future.

You are acting like they are going to give it away for free or something, if you believe they will "never" release it for anything else then you are gullible, unless the game is a total flop and they go bankrupt. I think what Chris meant to say is not on the current consoles, or if he's being funny he will rename the game to something else before releasing it with minor changes.

I think people underestimate how much people like money.

I'm not being gullible, I'm being realistic and about a community I've been part of since it was first created and know well.

You really haven't been anywhere near general chat on the RSi forums, especially when they feel entitled about something. The stink that was caused when they stopped giving lifetime insurance with ship sales was bad enough and still to this day, occasionally, raises it's ugly head. The internet would self destruct if they announced a console release of Star Citizen (the little RSi corner of it anyway).

If anyone is being gullible on how the community, who have funded every single penny used in the creation of this game would react, it's you my friend. Remember this isn't the same as a bunch of Sony fan boys kicking off about FFXV being delayed. The SC backers, especially the big funders, do have a voice that's listened to and heard by C.I.G and it only takes one person to open a floodgate.

They're going to run the risk of having a game so intimidating that people may not understand it. If you can't sum the game up in a sentence or two, then you may have a communication problem.

Pretty much this but I'll elaborate a little

You'll be able to trade, if you own a ship with cargo space all the way up to a massive transport ship

If you have a fighter, you'll be able to take escort missions or bounty hunter missions

A lot of ships are good for exploring. This will go from finding a mineral rich asteroid belt and selling the coordinates, all the way to finding a new uncharted jump point and getting the naming rights to an undiscovered system, if you manage to chart the jump.

You could get yourself a mining ship and pretend you're playing No Man's Sky

None of that is even scratching the surface of piracy, support ships (medical and repair), Salvaging, Ship to ship boarding and capture, small fleet battles (it'll never be first person Eve).

Or you may fancy yourself as a space racer and get yourself a formula one type ship and compete in competitions.

You'll be able to take missions depending on what you want to do. Some of them will be along the lines shown off in the 3.0 demo but the vast majority will be from mission boards. Players will be able to post missions for other people to take as well. For instance a guy playing as trader wants some security for his haul, so he'll post a job for escort pilots. Another who has been hit may post a bounty on the pirates who robbed him last time out.

Essentially though you can do what you want in the ships you own, the more variety of craft you have, the more options will be open to you. Everything they are selling to fund the game, will be available with in game with in game cash, the amount of cash you get is down to you and how you play.

Sounds pretty cheap considering what it costs to setup any company with more than a handful of employees. But considering there's a fan out there that spend $30k on SC ships, I think they can cover the costs of that coffee machine and couch just fine.

I wish I had a coffee machine

A game that is actually deep? and not instantly understandable... sounds like a plus, not a risk.

Too many watered down diluted games out there for the "average gamer" already. this was not intended for that audience from day one.

You're responding as if I said the game was bad or that's it's depth was a problem. It's the communication of the game's features and comprehension of the content that will be the challenge.

Lol, I guess Chris is pretty good at being a movie producer after all then. The people he's got in front of the camera, pretending to be developers are really, really good at looking extremely uncomfortable and acting like they don't know how to talk to one.
