Video gaming analyst ZHugeEX has mentioned on Twitter that Star Fox Zero was not profitable at all. In fact, it did so badly that he does not see Star Fox surviving. I asked for further clarification with sales, and it turns out that the game hasn’t even sold 500,000 copies sold worldwide. ZHugeEX doesn’t expect it to surpass that amount.

https://mynintendonews.com/2016/06/02/zhugeex-says-that-star-fox-zero-was-not-profitable-at-all/

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone really believe what this "analyst" says? No official sources have been released yet, although I guess that would make sense. He also claims that this will be the death of the Star Fox franchise, which I don't think is 100% true.

They couldn't have spent much developing it. It looked really low budget.

They should have put more time and effort into it. Even if they did though, I couldn't see it selling well. Look at Bayonetta 2.

That's unfortunate, I loved the first 2 game back in the day, some of my fondest Nintendo system memories are from those games.

the technology put forth with the gamepad probably was costly, with R&D

Godspeed, Star Fox crew. Hopefully you'll find peace with your fallen companions from Metroid and F-Zero.

In come the VGChartz posters (because that's where Bayonetta 2 sales defenders will resort to...)

I like star fox zero but I think maybe we can all agree it's time to hide Miyamoto in the basement. Keep him away from developing any games.

I'm not worried. It'll most likely be one of those games that keeps on getting trickle sales over time. I wouldn't be shocked if it creeps close to a million before its all said and done.

Has anybody played it that can answer me this - is the game salvageable?

For instance, can they update the game to just have single screen play? Or was the game too built into the idea of multiple screens to the point which that is not an option?

That's kind of what you get with a niche title with a poor presentation, released exclusively on a system on its death bed.

They made the controls an integral part of the game. So unfortunately it's the only option. Retooling the game to be played normal would change a lot. Too much.

Star Fox Zero is doing fine, its a very niche game and was never expected to do much. Its estimated it sold over 250k in the first week. I still say for the install base, Star Fox Zero is best selling Star Fox game, will for sure be more to come.

On another note, Star Fox Zero is brilliant, and some of Platinum Studios best work. The game will for sure become a cult hit for years to come.

First week sales estimates

  • 150K + in US. (You know how we do!)
  • 25K+ in Japan
  • 13K+ in Germany
  • 12K+ in France. (We love you France!)

Also remember this is a hardcore game that doesnt cater to kids. Doesnt require advertising etc. These numbers are very good for such a niche game.

I wonder how many people calling it 'bad' have actuallly played it for more than an hour.

I enjoyed the game from start to finish, personally. It's a really solid sequel to the N64 classic.

I love the game so far, being able to steer in one direction and aim in the other is fantastic (makes for good evasion and steering AT enemies to shoot them is stupid), it took me all of the one quick training mission to get used to it.

the worst thing is that The Game didn't reach it's full potential because of those Motion Controls!

It's not a bad game at all, but the controls pretty much killed any potential this game had.

Vocal demand doesn't translate into mass demand.

Star Fox should have died with the N64. There is a reason why these games aren't popular anymore.

Yeah I mean, how many games has it been that the Bumpers were the buttons that allowed you to Barrel Roll and NOW they decide "you know what the Right Analog stick is perfect for this!" (protip: it's not)

Star Fox Zero pretty much suffers the same fate Zelda Skyward Sword suffers, my only defense against this argument is that Skyward Sword was at least fun(?).

Hmm, moving the somersault to the analog allowed for much faster shooting cause you dont have to take your finger off the stick to press the somersault button. Once you get use to it, its a groundbreaking addition.

Same for the barrel roll, you dont have to take your finger off the sticks, its a much needed improvement. Reminds me of people who use to complain about NBA2K moving the shoot button to the analog stick to allow a much smoother transition.

there is nothing groundbreaking about it... its awkward and unnecessary, the whole game's controls were how not to make a star fox game. Classic star fox controls are 100x better

@aigis: Clearly you havnt played the game then. Its changes and innovates not only the way we play Star Fox, but the way we play rail-shooters in general. Its the most ground-breaking rail-shooter since Sin & Punishment: Star Successor.

Deserved. Spells a bad future for the Starfox IP but hopefully Nintendo gets the message that their hardware gimmicks are not wanted.

@iandizion713: I can go into detail if you want...

The games controls are so forced upon you when enemies will appear on the ground in all range making you look down at the gamepad to aim and try to not crash with the tv. Dog fights are completely ruined with this controls too, the increased range makes it so easy. There is no longer the tension of trying to get behind someone or shaking an enemy off your tail. Another problem is that it holds your hand too much, the game forces you to take certain paths before others and then you can even replay the planets at any time removing the need to play through a campaign like 64 (also making achievements less significant cause you can just jump). The walker is a horrible addition, if I wanted land vehicles why not just make landmaster levels and the Gyrowing brings the game to a screeching halt every time, awful addition. It doesnt feel like star fox.

Also I dont know what Splatoon has to do with star fox. I love star fox, 64 and assualt are some of my favorite games. Zero is just a huge disappointment to me

why, oh why, did they not make a proper Star Fox game for the Wii back around 2007/8?? Everyone even said how perfect the point and shoot controls of the Wii would be for Star Fox, and back then there was a big enough user base for the game to do well.

But no, they released it on a low selling system, and with a bizarre dual-screen control scheme that no one wanted. Not to mention the fact that they just remake Star Fox 64 for some reason instead of a truly original game.
