I'm interested in playing Starcraft 2. What I want to know, is how important is it to have played the first game. Will I be able to follow what's happening, or should I go back and play the first one before. I don't particularly want to play the first game, and I've watched IGN's "Starcraft in 5 minutes", soI sort of get the idea.

Probably a question better suited for the SC2 forum, but playing the first isn't really important. They retconn most of the story anyway, and there are enough tutorials and challenges to get you comfortable with the controls.

Gameplay wise, the campaign does a good job of introducing a new player. As Blizzard put it, it (supposedly) is easy to learn, and impossible to master. :P You can just read the story off of wikipedia, and youtube some cutscenes for the lore.

You don't really need to play the first, it has good tutorials.

The first game is great so you should definitely play it. It's not needed though, but it makes moments in Starcraft 2 (The Betrayal cinematic for example) twice as awesome.

Firstly, I'm sorry if I put thistopic in the wrong place, it was kind of an impulsive question. Secondly, I'm not worried about the gameplay, as much as the story. Thanks for the answers, everyone! :)

don't play SC 2 if you want actual campaign depth. it was actually pretty terrible. do play if you're looking for the greatest competitive experience around in its mulitplayer.

Jump in an enjoy it. No need to have trained much in SC1, SC2 is in many ways very very different. Just go for it and enjoy it!

This man either lies, has terrible taste, or has poor choice of words. SC2 has one of the best (if not the best) campaigns in RTS history. The variety, the polish, the fun factor and the challenge are simply outstanding. However, it pales compares to what the multiplayer offers :) He is correct in that regard. @TC: If you want, you could fly through SC1 with cheats in about 30 min. It's a great campaign, and definitely worth your time with or without cheats.

If I decided to play the first one, can anyone tell me about how many hours it might take without cheats?

the story is nice, the characters are awesome, playing through it is an absolute chore. it's not like it "trains" you into being a better competitive player, because that's laughable you're better off reading a synopsis on wikipedia and watching the important cutscenes on youtube imo.

What the... The campaign, a chore?

I haven't played a game this year which offers as much variety as SC2s campaign.

considering that the game explains you what happened in Sc1 when you install I would ssay "no you do not need to play the first one" Not even kidding, the install has an audio "log" of the happenings up till the time where you start the game :P
