Getting success on 100,000 units sold generally comes from shoestring budgets. Console games can be made on shoestring budgets, too (especially downloadables); it's just the environment is not as encouraging on consoles. StarCraft 2, OTOH, is a big-budget title, and needs good sales results (in the order of a few million) to turn a profit.HuusAsking
A retail game that has such small budget would never succeed on consoles. The market only accepts big budgeted titles with large marketing campaigns.

And you say downloadable...but it's the same deal, only absolutely biggest indie devs can make it on PSN and XBLA.

Also...SC2 had big budget, but by PC standards. Console budgets generally are far bigger, even for games with similiar production values.

Why would anyone Pirate SC2? I mean don't get me wrong, its single player is freaking epic and I can't wait for the next one to see the amazing conclusion, but the multiplayer aspect is the reason I keep coming back to this beast of a game, and when u pirate it, u cant access it. Same with black ops...If you are pirating the game to play single player, then u obviously have problems, because the single player is atrocious. If there was a multiplayer crack/cracked servers available, then I could sorta understand why one would pirate it, but without it, you are just wasting bandwidth.

Where have I seen this before? I remember something like this a few months ago about SCII when people made the same torrent argument. Are you sure this article isn't old?percech

This thread is just a last ditch response to the report of SC2's sales success, it doesn't matter if the information is 4 months old and proven wrong. Apparently PC games aren't allowed to be successful anymore, even if they are.

It's still the most sold PC exclusive game last year so there is no need to bring it over to the consoles. Besides, strategies on consoles don't work too well.

A lot of people download the game from other sites and play it legitimately. Same with WoW. If they find Blizzard's content servers are overloaded, they can download from other sites or over P2P.

It's sad to see one of last decade's most anticipated PC games get outsold by a PC expansion. Makes you believe the game sales on consoles are on a completely different level.

Don't they use their own OFFICIAL torrents though, not some place where you don't have to pay for it.

Pretty sure Blizzard made a statement that the figures were false, and that the actual estimated piracy number was a lot less.

The TC says that it "only sold 4 million". Well, that's really great, considering the circumstances. Plus, not every game will sell like Halo and COD! Though, it could have been higher if it weren't for piracy.

Edit: I'm pretty sure that Black Ops was the most pirated game on PC in 2010, lol.

I'm no pirate defender, but Blizz is rolling in cash, and I bet many of the pirates will buy the game after playing the awesome sp campaing, it is afterall mainly about the multiplayer.

I don't understand either. All I'm reading from PC fanboys in denial are that these sources are creating false reports, Blizzard is teh greatestzz, and 2.3+ million stolen copies is not bad  That's over $100 million in revenue that the company has lost due to piracy. Yet it sold 4 million so it's all good! Denial at it's finest

You're the one in denial.

You see this? This is Blizzard's OFFICIAL downloader. It's the thing that patches Blizzard games and through which Blizzard distribute their games. And it's a torrent client. This means, the numbers you posted in the article are ABSOLUTELY MEANINGLESS as is your point.

Well the game costs 60 bucks, has been split into 3 seperate games, and has no LAN. What do you expect?

danish-death

I don't need lan, the singleplayer is fun (although the story is weak) and I've played 550+ online matches. I have also started to beat the game on brutal + I've golded all the challenges. So I don't see a problem with the price tag. It's my most played game of 2010/2011 and I got a lot of playtime left it in. Not only that, but the SP part has roughly 30 levels, which is the same as the original game(s) ? Your logic seem to fail.

Well you're a blizzard fanboy, we cant really take your opinion and force it on everyone else. And btw, I dont like online play, I hate it, im not a competitive person and a lot of people use the internet in my place so hosting online when I can play lan is a waste o bandwidth. Every PC game is 50 at most with the exception of SC2 and MW2, ironic? Both by Activision Blizzard. My logic is perfectly fine, you may not agree with it but the millions that torrented do.

Blizzard distributed the game on torrents, there was no demo to the game so people have downloaded the game as a demo. The real meat of SC2 is the mp.

Dying huh?

PC sales rose 20% last year.

Superbored

Missing the point huh?

PC would have more blockbuster exclusives if people didn't feel entitled to get everything for free. Hermits complain about consolization of games, then click their torrent downloader to check to see how much longer its gonna take to pirate the latest game. Then they go to System Wars forums to complain about how Sheep, Lems & Cows are ruining their games.

Do people pirate games on other platforms?? Absolutely

Is pirating a bigger issue on the PC?? ABSOLUTELY!

Competitiveness has nothing to do with playing SC2 and you must have 0 clue about Blizzard RTSs if you think that. Custom games exist just for that reason and always have, since the Starcraft 1 days. I am a Starcraft nut and I've never played SC competitively, only UMS games.

Every Blizzard game up to now has retailed at 60$. That point is meaningless.

Your logic "perfectly fine", that's something worthy of a chuckle.

Ah yes PC piracy killing PC gaming where have I heard this before. All PC piracy proves is that if you make a console port your going to get pirated or just plain not sell.

Look at the sales of BC2 more players than xbox or ps3, also when you think about how used games can still create unique players I question the amount of "sales" on consoles EA actually recieved and not used copy sales.

Then there is SC2 that sold 4.5 million copies not counting korea or china, with those counted its probably more than any ps3 game

Then WOW cataclysm with sold god knows how many units

Also Civ5 which sold quite well as well, despite being a SP focused game vulnerable to piracy.

BTW how are those Killzone3 sales coming along?

Or how was alan wake's sales?

Either way, most or not, 2.3 million and 4 million pirated is inexcusable. That's insane.

NanoMan88

Can consolites read or are they not even capable of doing that?

Blizzard distributed the game on torrents, there was no demo to the game so people have downloaded the game as a demo. The real meat of SC2 is the mp.

It's not like SC2 or any PC game for that matter needs to be the SINGLE example of a heavily pirated PC game. Just go on a torrent site and that's the proof in itself. Tons of downloads, tons of games. Spin it how you want, Black Ops was pirated to hell and back as well on PC. The irony of that is that MW2 was pirated like crazy, according to PC gamers, because of the fact that it was "consolized". Yet, when Treyarch is going to allow modding, it's still pirated to hell and back on PC. So spare me the excuses.

What's insane here is how most of you consolites can't read the numbers and just act like nothing happened when you are corrected.

Or perhaps I have a life outside of video games, hence, am not on these forums 24/7. Perhaps I have to leave to go somewhere so I don't see a post on here...crazy thought right...

Hmm, I wonder why? Word spread in the PC gaming community that Black Ops was poorly optimized and ran like crap, thus people downloaded to check how it ran on their computer. Also another reason for downloading was just to see if the game was worth it -- nothing wrong with that. I deleted Black Ops after 5 minutes because the level of suck was obvious.

Really? I have Black Ops on PC as well. Runs perfectly fine. Never have had an issue. That's one of the worst excuses I have ever heard.

Notsureifsrs. It is not an excuse, also you act as if there is something wrong with downloading a game to test performance before buying.

Just read on any PC forum and you will run into 'Black Ops performs terribly' or 'Black Ops unoptimized' threads...PS3 suffered from similar problems.

You answered to a OP whose original article states what I restated.

It's not a matter of having a life outside videogames, it's a matter of knowing how to read. You know, that thing that you learn to do when you're 5 years old.

You see this? This is Blizzard's OFFICIAL downloader. It's the thing that patches Blizzard games and through which Blizzard distribute their games. And it's a torrent client. This means, the numbers you posted in the article are ABSOLUTELY MEANINGLESS as is your point.N30F3N1X
But the torrent client for Blizzard downloads a single .exe file, and it's using Blizzard's own official tracker. The 7.19GiB file being referred to by the OP is most likely *not* Blizzard's official SC2 download - especially if, as I suspect, it's just a DVD image or something, which means it's now not even the same type of file as Blizzard's providing. If anything, posts likes yours seem to be saying 'Well, you say Black Ops was illegally downloaded X number of times, but STEAM DOWNLOADS GAMES TOO so the 'downloaded' numbers are meaningless how do you know those weren't through Steam!'

According to the site, Blizzard's 7.19 GB PC game received the "Most Data Transferred" award, moving a massive 15.77 petabytes across the Internet since the game went torrent-side three months ago. The list also notes that legitimate copies of StarCraft II transferred additional data using Blizzard's own BitTorrent downloader, however legit numbers weren't provided as Blizzard's tracker doesn't provide statsrpgs_shall_rule

Looks like a slight misquote on your end. Emphasis mine:

Interestingly, the legit copies of the game sold by Blizzard may have transferred even more data. All download copies of StarCraft 2 have been distributed through Blizzard's very own BitTorrent downloader. Unfortunately Blizzard's tracker doesn't provide any stats so we don't know if the official beats the illegitimate counterpart traffic wise.TF

tldr nobody else knows how the internet works!
