Starcraft: arguably made the RTS genre what it is today

Halo: arguably made console FPS's what they are today

But both these games just seem to come out with high-res versions as sequels. Halo 3 doesn't bug me as much, since they're ending a trilogy and it wouldn't make sense to make a radical change.

But it's been 10 years since Starcraft I. I guess I expected Starcraft II to reinvent the genre, and it doesn't like it will at all. It's basically a shinier version of Starcraft, with a new storyline.

Am i the only who is bothered by this?

I haven't waited almost ten years to get something radically different from the game I loved. I don't want Blizzard to re-invent the wheel, I want new tires and shinier hubcaps. Leave "re-inventing the genre" to some other IP, and let Starcraft be Starcraft.

PS - brace yourself for hordes of PC fanboys and self-proclaimed "true gamers" balking mentioning Halo and Starcraft in the same thread without a "... is so much better than..." seperating them.

FYI Starcraft is the Counterstrike of RTS.

Halo made CONSOLE fps's shine though. PC shooters are leagues beyond, not going to refute that.

How in the world could anyone run into assumptions when we hardly know anything about Starcraft 2, for all we know this game might come out in 2009.  It still has a little left to go, not only that but like i said before no (deep) details have been said about the game.

I don't want a reinvented Starcraft, then it won't be the Starcraft I loved and played for a decade now. The main deal is the story, and maybe a few added units and some tweaks..

Because people are trashing it based on graphics. Not gameplay. I have been having one hell of a time with the beta. It is more like Halo CE than Halo 2. Also you have to remember they disabled alot of features, weapons and effects for the beta so they dont release too much.

The "in the spotlight" factor. When Starcraft was in development/released there were droves of TA fanboys (if you don't know the acronym, you're on your own) and other notable elements of the gaming public criticizing the hell out of more than a few elements of Starcraft... "Warcraft in space," "Sprite based graphics," "no formations," "low unit counts in the map," "little fundamental advancement beyond Warcraft," etc etc etc. 8'ish years later, those critics are all but forgotten, but they sure as hell existed.

Oh, and Halo being console exclusive and associated tightly with MS doesn't help much.  You see MGS/FF and Mario/Zelda receiving similar criticisms.

I love Starcraft & Halo.... yes Starcraft made RTS's what they are today, but Halo making FPS's what they are today..... dude as great & fun as Halo is.... you're way off on that one.

Also, I'll take what Blizzard gives me for Starcraft II, I'll trust them to make the game great, not 1 person who wants something radically different.

It goes for Halo as well, I want more Halo.... not something that doesnt even resemble Halo whatsoever.

What happened to sequels we have seen before? Did something put a dent into the fun? Will we ever be able to smile again?
Find out, on the next wii update.

SC2 doesn't have to be new. We loved what it did and now want more.

We don't NEED anything new. Blizzard aren't a developer that implements new things just for the sake of them so it wouldn't be suprised if SC2 doesn't deivate from the original formula that much

If people need something new. Go out and buy another RTS. The market is drowning in them already.

Actually the rts genre went something like this

Dune - C&C - TA - SC

Those games defined the genre, in that order. Each after dune defined differances in the genre and made there own unique catergories in the genre.

You might be the only one who is suprised. Seriously, WHY were you expecting starcraft 2 to re-invent the genre? Starcraft 1 sure as hell didn't. Warcraft 3 didn't. Warcraft 2 didn't. Warcraft 1 didn't. World of Warcraft and Diablo didn't re-invent their genres either. What all these games did, was define the genre. They did what the genre did best, and starcraft 2 will be no exception. Besides, they don't want to ruin the near perfect balance that made SC1 such a great competetive game.

I see no problem with that line too indeed. After all, most FPS coming out lately are more like Halo than they are like half life. Halo just put together a lot of features from several other games, and maybe some new ones into one game, and since then most fps follow the same formula.

Agreed,

Halo is great, but it really wasn't anything special. It was just really good.

Blizzard on the other-hand, everything they make is near masterpiece.

Halo may have a "triolgy" but Starcraft has a storyline, and a damn good one at that.  I am more than happy for them to keep the gameplay the same but polished if the story is there.  As with all Bliazzrd games, the story is what makes them for me.

I must admit i hope there is some innovation, but as someone else in this thread posted, leave the Starcraft IP alone and create a new one to make big changes!!

Actually Halo has a worthwile story too, and there's apparantly lots of people buying halo games for the single player and story. I hope for both games they keep the good things, throw out the bad things, and add some small things to spice the game up, because that's how you make the best sequel.

Oh wait, that's what they're both doing. /

Halo has a good story like how the Star Wars movies have good stories. Are they deep or emotional? No. But they get the job done and have enough cool moments to get by.

i honestly don't get what people are complaining about. A few people don't like the Halo 3 beta because it isn't what they expected, but you have to ask, what the hell were you expecting? It's Halo. The core gameplay isn't going to change. Same goes with Starcraft. They're both GREAT games, and the theory of "why fix something that isn't broken" goes along with both.

IT isn't even arguable wether or not SC made the RTS what it is today. It did. Every RTS since Starcraft is judged next to that game and no one has yet to pass it.

I dont get why people expect sequels to be totally diffrent from the previous ones in their series.  Its stupid to try to totally change the forumla, changing it to much just ruins the fact that your even making a sequel cause it pulls you too far away from the original concept.  Yes I know totally changing the series with a new an improved game could be good but its not what sequels are for, thats what new IP's are for; Sequels are for improving and perfecting that series.  If you wanted something new and ground breaking you will have to wait for Bungie and Blizzard to make new IP's instead of sequels cause they are the type of developers that like to stick extremly close to their main goal and not just reinvent stuff for the hell of it.

Going with the don't try to fix whats not broken theoryDoctorBunny

Exactly. And there's plenty of room for new, fresh stuff without completely re-inventing the genre. Personally, Starcraft is my #2 favorite game of all time (right behind Diablo II), and I wouldn't have Starcraft 2 any other way. Same Starcraft controls and basic feel + severely upgraded graphics + new campaign + some new units and abilities + it's freaking Blizzard = The greatest RTS ever concieved in the history of RTS comes out when Blizzard says so.

Miranda Keyes

Dr. Halsey

343 Guilty Spark

The heretic

Halo also has 3 books involved with its story. Soon to be 4. How many does Starcraft have? hmmm....gotcha.

Uninformed. Blizzard has a whole string of Starcraft, Diablo, and Warcraft books that are very good. Gotcha there.

^Ya got me. I concide defeat. But still, saying Halo doesn't have a story is non-sense.
