Why do people think Halo is the biggest game franchise out there? The immense amount of hype creates the illusion that it's the most important game ever made. You hardly hear anything about The Sims, yet that alone outsold both Halo and Halo 2 combined. Diablo 2 sold more. WoW sold more. Starcraft sold more.

Of course it does. But it's a mere shadow of what a story should be compared to StarCraft.

The children on GS do. Don't listen to the children. I actually enjoy RE4 and Psychnauts more then i did Halo 2's story.

Halo may have a "triolgy" but Starcraft has a storyline, and a damn good one at that. I am more than happy for them to keep the gameplay the same but polished if the story is there. As with all Bliazzrd games, the story is what makes them for me.

I must admit i hope there is some innovation, but as someone else in this thread posted, leave the Starcraft IP alone and create a new one to make big changes!!

ArisShadows

Actually Halo has a worthwile story too, and there's apparantly lots of people buying halo games for the single player and story. I hope for both games they keep the good things, throw out the bad things, and add some small things to spice the game up, because that's how you make the best sequel.

Oh wait, that's what they're both doing. /

Uninformed. Blizzard has a whole string of Starcraft, Diablo, and Warcraft books that are very good. Gotcha there.

There are a total of 6 Starcraft books, with two more coming for a total of 8 books officially based on the Starcraft Universe.

----

In addition to numerous fan fiction works taking place in the StarCraft universe, it has spawned several official novels and eBooks, including StarCraft: Uprising (ebook only), StarCraft: Liberty's Crusade, StarCraft: Shadow of the Xel'Naga, StarCraft: Speed of Darkness, StarCraft: Queen of Blades[39] and StarCraft Ghost: Nova. Simon & Schuster has also announced the publication of "StarCraft: the Dark Templar Saga #1: Firstborn" for late May 2007 (ISBN 0-743-47125-3) and the publication of StarCraft: the Dark Templar Saga #2: Shadow Hunters in the series (ISBN 0-7434-7126-1) for November 2007.In addition to numerous fan fiction works taking place in the StarCraft universe, it has spawned several official novels and eBooks, including StarCraft: Uprising (ebook only), StarCraft: Liberty's Crusade, StarCraft: Shadow of the Xel'Naga, StarCraft: Speed of Darkness, StarCraft: Queen of Blades[39] and StarCraft Ghost: Nova. Blizzard Entertainment authorized two short stories in Amazing Stories magazine, entitled StarCraft: Hybrid and StarCraft: Revelations.[40] Blizzard also licensed Wizards of the Coast to publish StarCraft Adventures, a supplement for the role-playing gameAlternity set in the StarCraft universe. Even manga comics[41] and action figures have been done in the StarCraft universe.[42] A CD was also released of 2 game tracks and 11 original works by Korean musicians.[39] A StarCraftboard game entitled StarCraft: The Board Game is in development.[43]

Too bad. But all you need to know is that StarCraft is about the only original IP science fiction game I can think of with a decent story. Mass Effect may become the second, and Mass Effect will probably have an even better story than StarCraft. Truthfully, though, no game has what I would call a "great story." Not even the very best.

im not dissapointed by halo....its a good series that is spanning a trilogy over a short time, but Starcraft does bother me. I agree with you on that. Blizzard changed the formula in every RTS they made up until now. They're taking steps backward...Something I don't appreciate, because I've always found Blizzard to be the most revolutionary RTS makers (with the exception of the original warcraft, based on some research).

honestly I'm very glad they're focusing on having SC2 be every bit as balanced as the original for competitive play. I have never once had someone I played in SC say "OMG your protoss! THATS A RIGGED RACE!" or "OMG ZERG ARE TOO POWERFUL" cuz if they do everyone else will just laugh at them for being stupid. As long as they keep the races balanced with the new units and keep the game as fun as the original I will be happy with SC2 no point in trying to redefine anything.

Wait, what? StarCraft 2, taking steps backward? This is Blizzard's first RTS with truly massive battles. From what I heard, NO unit cap, or at least a very high one. That's a huge change from StarCraft's 200-count unit cap, and WarCraft III's anemic 90-count unit cap.

Starcraft II will be as balanced when it comes out as Starcraft I was...... which means it will have balancing issues..... but thats the great thing about the internet..... UPDATES!

within a year or so of its release im pretty sure they'll have the balancing ironed out!

Didn't help that Warcraft 3 had upkeeps to bring that 90 count even lower. It worked for the game, I guess, especially with the amount of abilities you had to micro...

Actually the rts genre went something like this

Dune - C&C - TA - SC

Those games defined the genre, in that order. Each after dune defined differances in the genre and made there own unique catergories in the genre.

Zenkuso

You are correct but what does TA mean?

Well, at least we've got C&C3 for eye-candy.  That game sure looks sweet with the settings all the way up.  :D
