On any platform.

I was just watching some Starcraft 2 matches on a master PC, and it reminded me of how awesome a developer Blizzard is. Their artwork is so well done and unique, and I really think they have some of the best art design in the industry. The gameplay in their games is mainly what is so great, IMO. I would put Blizzard right up there with Valve, Bioware, Rockstar, Nintendo, Sony, Bungie, Naughty Dog, From Software, Rocksteady, Retro, and a few other developers in terms of top tier developers. I really think they are the better half of Activision Blizzard.

Anyways, I was watching some matches of 3's Diamond League, and the game is just so intense. The management of resources, the build order, building of units, micromanagement, it is all just overwhelming to me. I have never played the game before, only watched. The game intimidates me, and admittedly, I've never been that great at RTS games, so I respect it that much more. The battles that take place in the game are just so intense, and the teamwork / communication that takes place during the game is unreal. The matches remind me of MMA fights where you see blood, and just go for the kill. It's really hard to put into words, but the game is just very easy to admire and it is obvious that the skill ceiling is very high.

I know other games have high skill ceilings, but I'm just not sure if they are as high as Starcraft II. Fighting games were immediately the next genre in mind. I understand that games like Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, and quite a few others have very high skill ceilings, as do some first person shooting games like Counter-Strike, Quake, even Halo. I just think that all things considered, SC2 is the highest.

That's cool, I guess. Starcraft, and RTS games in general still look very boring though.

Out of mainstream titles I'd say this is almost certain. There's some things out there though that throw the notion into doubt.

I laughed at UMVC3 having a high skill ceiling. I mean, there's a decent competitive scene but come on. Virtua Fighter has the highest ceiling. By far.

Well one of easily. Though I'm not big on RTS, I have not yet seen an RTS that has more tactical nuance than SC2.

Some fighters are pretty intense

and Quake 3 is bloody science at high levels

I'd argue the RTS genre especially Starcraft 2 has more complexities requiring more brain power than the fighting and shooting genre where quick reflexes are more significant.

You need pretty fast reflexes to play SC2 at a high level and you need to be able to commit to decisions in a split second. While those are both important in both fighters and certain FPS games both tend to live in the moment. That said it's really hard to judge skill ceiling since I've never actually seen anyone hit the skill ceiling in either fighters, shooters or RTS. I've never seen someone block every overhead, tech everythrow and confirm every hit perfectly. I've never seen someone land every shot. However I think the fact I'm having trouble even coming up with a scenario where someone has hit the skill ceiling for an RTS says something.

Actually SC:BW (Starcraft Broodwar) has a higher skill cap. I love SC2 (both playing and watching it) but SC:BW definitely deserves that title.

This.

Brood War's skill ceiling is ****ing insane.

Granted, some of it comes from clunky mechanics that were fixed in SC2, but the skill ceiling is higher nonetheless.

I know that. I'm not saying quick reflexes aren't needed for SC2. I "was" a Platinum 1v1 player of SC2 at SEA server after all. Joniro #671 Just that in fighting and shooting genres, quick reflexes are more significant than critical thinking because in fighting and shooting you're only controlling one character which is yourself and a quick jab or one tiny mistake can lead to immense disaster unlike RTS there's lots of things you need to take into account and manage resources and units and having one tiny mistake doesn't result to a defeat right away.

Yeah, there are some games that can intimidate the hell out of us. I was like that when Ninja Gaiden came out. I kept reading reviews that said the game was brutal. I was put off initially but something made me cave in and buy the game. When I played it, yes, it was tough but no where near the game breaking difficulty touted by users or some reviewers. I absolutely loved the game and even finished MN mode.

Don't let the game intimidate you so much that it doesn't make you play it. Chances are, you'll miss out on a gem.

And yes, RTS matches are out of this world. But know one thing - these users use Hotkeys and make atleast 150 moves/actions per minute. If you can get the hang of the build priority and order, master hotkeys, and the speed then you can also play like these users. Starcraft shouldn't be that difficult in the Single Player. But for Multiplayer, you definitely need the skills mentioned previously.

I agree. Starcraft 2 is one of the most intense, difficult and tactically brilliant games ever made. Hat off for Blizzard to make very unit count. The smallest unit can change the tide of battle easily.

Well since its a strategy game, I think you are confusing skill with strategy here.

In Starcraft its not about lightning quick reflexes and skill, its about being smart, managing your resources, and its less to do with skill and more to do with strategizing and planning.

It's very high, there's a huge amount going on and required in Starcraft; I'd say much more then your usual FPS and fighter. But I'm doubtful it's as high as Brood War is even at the moment.

Broodwar probably has a higher ceiling simply because its not as streamlined and requires more micromanagement of everything on the field.

I played both and although I like DoW, I can't deny that CoH is way better. I loved that game. Was as addicted to it as I was to starcraft.

Anyway OP, I find it hilarious how you listed Blizzard as a "top developer" then proceed to put in place next to trash developers. Half the devs you put it next to are like a joke compared to Blizz. Well at least you didn't put Bioware on your list.

Yeah this is funny, because starcraft 2 is the one strategy game that IS about speed and skill, rather than careful planning and strategy.
