Korean's are also quite adept at winter sports.

if so, then korean has no life...this is pathetic if a country's national sport is a video game.
i think korea's national sport are like taekwondo, soccer, figure skating, or baseball
balfe1990
I agree with this lad..
If this video game is their national " sport " then they are one sad little country...
I'm suprised South Korea doesn't have some obesity epidemic happening right now
And before any of yous quote me for sayinga video game is not a sport, take into account this fact -- ITS NOT. Sport involves excercise, strategy and actually getting out into the fresh air..sitting at a computer screen shooting magic at polygons does not count ( or whatever u do in the game )
And by the way, South Korea are actually quite good at football...
Whats wrong with them making it one of their national sport? Its 2010, time to get up to speed with the fact that notions change over-time. Its considered an e-sport, btw, if it makes you happy. If sport has to include a rigorous physical activity, please go ahead and convince people that curling is a sport as defined by its exhaustive physical exertions. Oh they do sometimes play matches in open-aired areas so there you go, you have strategy, fresh-air, thousands of spectators and some finger exercise :PThe real question is.. are there any Starcraft k-pop songs? I'll have to investigate.
In the meantime, here are two soccer songs. Until such time as the popular k-pop bands start making songs about Starcraft, I'd have to say soccer is still their national sport..

In Texas we worship football basically. Our practices are 5 hours long 6 days a week and this is high school[QUOTE="gammon56"][QUOTE="sleepingzzz"]
Actually, American football is the most popular sport in the US. It past baseball some time ago.

Wow...what do you want a cookie? Six hour practices 6 days a week. All year long and more of a body work out. I know cause I did it for 12 years and football along side it for 3.
And this is through elementary, middle, and then into High School.
Whop, hold on everyone, we got Captain Badass over here![QUOTE="glez13"]

No America isn't soccer. First America is a continent, thus it cannot have a national sport. Second its not soccer its FOOTBALL.
In the eyes of most people in the world, "America" is the United States, not a continent. There is no single American continent, but two -- North America and South America.
I have been in other parts of the world they call it the US not america.i've known this for years. i have a south korean friend who is addicted to starcraft. they even had a documentery on this on HBO

Starcraft IS strategy ;)A sport, by definition, is physical. And don't tell me that you have to move the mouse, I've heard it. Using your "physical" abilities is not the main part at all.
So pistol shooting isn't a sport. Guess the Olympic committee are totally wrong then :|And before any of yous quote me for sayinga video game is not a sport, take into account this fact -- ITS NOT. Yeah I woldn't call it a "sport" (likebaseballcough)... lets just call it a "game" or "passtime"... but "sport" I don't think so.
And to the guy who thinks that's pathetic that "omgee a video gaemz is the sportz lulz" try to think of it as their chess tournaments... yeah.... like chess on steroids with rockets, tanks, nukes, and blood..... lots of blood.
not so pathetic anymore is it? Unless you think chess is stupid in which case... go back to Halo. Leave the thinking games to us big boys.

Well I don't think anyone actually considers it a proper sport...Its an Olympic sport yeah, but thats about the full extent of it...
I don't understand how everyone is goin mad at me for saying video games aren't a sport, how blind are you lot??
should I go over to some football/rugby/baseball forum and declare that video games are a sport??? How do you think they would react?
Yeah, they'd laugh and have every right to...Video games are an entertainment medium and nothing else...Considering it a sport is just comical...

Anyone considers it one? Hah. The Olympic committee considers it a sport, that completely invalidates anything against it. And of course the majority people who are avid traditional sports fans are going to think against it, what do you expect, esports in western countries are still barley making a dent. It's what they are used to. But then ask someone who lives in the presence of popular e-sports, like yes, south korean star league, and their opinion will most likely be completely different, and will more likely consider it as a sport - as it *is considered as one* there. If you were there, standing in an crowd of thousands watching a tournament and thought otherwise *you* would be laughed at. Go figure. Fact of the matter is your definition or interpretation of what a sport is, is wrong. While I think video games are in their infancy as far as being taken seriously globally as 'sport', and I think the competitive edge of the vast majority of games is far to lenient to be considered something actually compelling, the evidence, particularly south korea stands. Ignoring blatant evidence or the Olympic committee could be called 'blind' - in your own words.[QUOTE="balfe1990"]

Sports started as entertainment medium and nothing else too. No. It started as sports. I.e. Phsical activity governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Yes a form of entertainment to some degree but primarily the afore-mentioned.

Video gaming may be a "sport" but its a completely different breed. In other words, its a so-called" e-sport ". Which in turn, alienates it from the category of traditional ( I know im gonna get hate for this) Real sports..
Seriously, would you send your kid to " Little-League Gaming " in lieu of traditional baseball or whatever?
The bottom line IMO is that video-games are not a sport, they're an " e-sport "..Entirely different in my eyes.
Problem is what is a 'real' sport?Alrite, I agree with you to some extent, but you keep referring to Video gaming as an e-sport and your spot on.. Wherever you go the definition will change, as what is a 'sport' and what isn't will change depending on location.
Though I can't disagree, games fall into the e-sport or 'mind sports' category, and you have 'physical sports'; they are all 'sports' difference is in physical sports are much, much.. much more dominate globally, especially in western society (which is why they are taken so seriously in our culture).
Either way a child getting the best of both worlds is good; sport can be entertainment and social just as much as self improvement.

Yeah well I did have the Western world in mind when I was talking about sports but obviously South Koreas culture is vastly different and their idea of a sport is basically an anti-thesis of our own (or mine at least).
Well I think we're gonna have to agree to disagree on this one man, unless we wanna be here all day..;)
I love a good debate:P

It's an e-sport. Many people whining about the physical sport notion doesn't invalidate its definition.
Explain please?!?Balfe1990

Following your own logic, StarCraft is a sport too. Without the "physical" part. That's why its cla$$fication has an "e" before "sport".
