If Mario Kart Wii kills Gran Turismo 5 in sales, does that mean there is no more debate?

People want casual.

People don't care about graphics and system power.

People want fun over realistic.

Both are highly popular racing franchises with about the same amount of sequels. Both come out at roughly the same time, both have two entirely different approaches. Is this the real battle to see which direction the video game industry will go?

And before you give me the excuse that more people own a Wii than PS3, well, same goes for 360 yet Halo 3 was still the #2 selling game last year I believe.

I see where your coming from but i find GT fun so thats all down to the individual, i think the market is large enough to cater for both types of gamers.

I'm a car enthousiast so that speaks for itself. Would love to test out those cars in the Jeremy Clarkson track.

And as for the comparison, I think Gran Turismo will top it. But I can't say for sure.

GT5 is a simulation racer

JUST AS many hardcores like both sub-genres. And they are very different genres.

let's see, Racing simulators haven't exactly been the most popular genre, and there are many people (myself included) that prefer an arcadey racer to a realistic one.Hewkii

Of course it sold well, but it's not really fair to compare sales of a complete game to a prologue to a complete game.

Well if you're happy that Mario Kart destroyed sales of a prologue game ( or demo), then goodluck to you... However you should eventually compare sales of Mk with GT5 the full game...

So many are quick to point out this is the "demo" of the game and even alot of cows have said they won't buy the game until the full version comes out.

If Mario Kart outsells GT5P, congrats.....you beat a "demo". The real question is will it beat the full game when it's released next year.

If anything thats the one thing that doesnt show its sbecoming casual. Just about everything else does. Arcade racers are just as "hardcore" as simulation racers.

except that a toyota isnt really a good analogy for MKWii, more like a dune buggy. a dune buggy is more fun than a mustang.

Heres the break down.

Wii had more consoles and only has 1 blockbuster title out at a time which makes the game sell well because the majority of Wii games blow chunks people are forced to buy rehashes and games that they have already played.

Both are very different games. Besides, higher sales doesn't mean it's better. Just look at the Wii sales, it's higher but I don't think it's in the same league as PS3 and 360.(and I'm not talking about power, I'm talking about games.)Terami

Disagree about Mario kart being casual.. It can be a pretty compettive game against people.. Granted it is easier to pick up, it is still hard to master and get very good at.

If Mario Kart outsells Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, it could be for a variety of reasons. But why do you insist on comparing the two in sales? If GT5:P sells well, regardless of how Mario Kart sells, it's clear that there's still an audience for it. So what if more people want an arcade racer? Does that mean that everyone who wants a realistic racer are somehow "wrong"?

It's preference, not positions of right and wrong.

it would mean people want games that are fun with gaming elements instead of driving shiney cars in circles untill the required amount of circles is reached
