Steam Greenlight announced, will let gamers vote indie games on to Steam

Comments 43 Graham Smith at 08:18pm July 9 2012

Valve have just announced Steam Greenlight. The new service will work like the Steam Workshop, but for indie games. Creators can submit their work, whether it?s an unfinished playable build or screenshots and videos, and gamers can then vote on the games they like. The best rated games will enter Valve?s approval process for inclusion in the Steam store.

Steam Greenlight is currently due to launch at the end of August, and it should be a boon to any developer trying to make a living from indie games.

?Making the call to publish or not publish a title isn?t fun,? said Anna Sweet, in a press release the developer just released. ?Many times opinions vary and our internal jury is hung on a decision. But with the introduction of the Steam Workshop we realized an opportunity to enlist the community?s help as we review certain titles and, hopefully, increase the volume and quality of creative submissions.?

Currently any indie game designer can submit their work for inclusion on the Steam store, but the approval process can be frustrating. Valve get far more submissions than they can quickly process, and indie developers whose games have been rejected often say they weren?t given a clear reason why. Being accepted, meanwhile, can make the difference between success and failure as an indie game developer.

This new process should make it much easier for the best games to get on to the service. Best of all, gamers can make the difference. Have a favourite indie game that?s currently not available through the Steam store? Convince the developer to submit it, then rally the community to vote it to the top of the Steam Greenlight pile. My first vote will go to the excellent turn-based strategy game Unity of Command.

Steam Greenlight was revealed at a private event in London for British indie designers, and the official website has more details. What indie games do you think should be on Steam?

This is a fantastic idea. Many good games like Oniken, Unity of Command, Panzer Corps and UnEpic will have a chance.

Steam sucks, Amazon is where its at if you want the best deals on Digital Downloads. As an added bonus, most games on Amazon do not need Steam heavy DRM system.

Sucks? In what way?

Other stores offer better deals, sure. However, Steam offersfantastic sales prices which often beat out competitors (due to it being a far wider platform for distribution). More and more DD services are starting to hit lower to match Steam's sales (and sometimes undercut them).

Steam is hardly heavy DRM. If you could explain your definition of "heavy DRM" that would be great.

Excellent idea; allowing Valve to communicate with the fans, and to find out the noticeable trends in gaming. Kudos, Kupo! :)

Yeah an Amazon sale like once a year twice maybe. Steam regularly discount games on an almost daily basis.

And yeah people hate steam cos DRM, but what bad has come from it so far? They say "If steam goes down you can't play your games" but that hasn't happened and is unlikely to happen

And even if it does, there's offline mode and Gaben has been quoted as saying they would just release a patch to remove Steam authentication from all the games. Thus being able to keep all the games you bought.

To help your argument, this should be mentioned:

"According to the Steam Subscriber Agreement, Steam's availability is not guaranteed and Valve is under no legal obligation to release an update disabling the authentication system in the event that Steam becomes permanently unavailable.Despite this, Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve, said in a post on the Steam User Forums that "Unless there was some situation I don't understand, we would presumably disable authentication before any event that would preclude the authentication servers from being available." He added, "We've tested disabling authentication, and it works."

Source

Even if Steam goes down, doubt you'd have any reasons to worry about games not being playable,as long as you have retail copies,or keep backups of your DD bought games(which can be made through the Steam client).Steamworks authenticator would simply be disabled by the side of Valve...

indeed like it or not CS 1.5 is a mod and there is an official 1.6 mod for hl1 technically making cs 1.6 an indie venture

I'd add DayZ to that too. That's a mod and look how amazing it is.

They have measures in place so that if something like that ever happened, you will still be able to play your games.

Sounds like a great idea now that the community has more choice in the matter. Nevertheless, niche games will likely not be added now, hm?

Because everything points to the 12th. No new games are being released until Prototype on the 24th, all sales end on the 11th or 12th, plus those Pyro items thing ends on the 11th as well.

This seems like a good idea on the face of it - but popularity is not always a measure of a good game. I'd hate to see some interesting good quality niche titles get overlooked because not enough people voted for them to be included. There should really be a balance between what the majority of the community vote onto Steam, while still having a more structured selection process.

After all, a game that doesn't sell well normally could have a massive boost during a Steam sale.

Additionally, maybe Steam should take this to the other end of the scale, and allow the community to vote off some of the truly dire bug-infested and broken/unfinished games that are somehow allowed onto the service.

Developers are still free to submit their game the old fashion way. This is just another way for indie developers to get their game noticed.
