I just can not understand why you would buy a new console when you can wait for a little bit and get a Steam Machine.

@lostrib:
500 to 1300 dollars based on recent steam machine prices revealed by third party manufacturers iBuyPower and Digital Storm. The entire Linux library is playable with the steamOS while you have to buy the windows OS to play the rest that's not supported.

Pretty much. Its a very expensive HTPC at the moment.

I'm not talking about replacing a decent gaming pc, I'm talking about picking between a Steam Machine and what people are calling "next gen" consoles.

Those "next gen" consoles have something called games....

Yes, you are wrong. There are very few games on Linux at the moment so you will need a Windows OS which makes it pointless. Much like this thread.

Well if that's the case I stand corrected. No reason to be an asshat.
@Sophette:
The point of the steam machine was to bring pc gaming into the living room into a smaller form factor.

right, those next gen consoles aren't worth it right now either.

Yeah but I was under the impression that the entire steam library would be available....if that were the case it would easily be a better buy than consoles.

Where? let me know when this happens
I still say that Linux is the fatal flaw of the Steam Machines. Unless Valve can get GTAV, Destiny, and Tales of Zestiria onto SteamOS, you're much better off building your own PC to hook up onto the TV. Sure, Windows doesn't have the games i mentioned, but you'll have something to play other than Valve titles.
Steam Machine is pointless for us PC Gamers, but it might bring more peasants into nobility.
We really should have a hermit scale.
Consolites = serfs
low end machines/steambox= Barons
midrange PCs= Counts
highend PC's= Dukes
hermit moderators = royalty
All seems legit to me
Our very own SW feudal system!

Some hermit moderator, did you even play half life?
Plus my rig>your rig. I should be higher up than you

Half life has been sullied by putting it on consoles, how common.
Oh and
"Plus my rig>your rig. I should be higher up than you, YOUR MAJESTY"
And the answer is no, cos I can ban you. >:D
Meh, I'll just stick to a proper desktop PC and any console that takes my fancy.
Might as well do this..if you're looking for a console experience hook up ur desktop to ur tv and get the steam controller.
So can Steam play games like Next Halo, Uncharted 4, Infamous and other exclusive?
Yes.
Can I play Red Dead Redemption, Halo, Uncharted, God Of War, Forza ect on these boxes?
Can you play Red Dead Redemption, Halo 1,2,3 ODST and 4, Uncharted 1,2,3, God of War 1,2,3, chains of olympus, ghost of sparta, ascension, Forza (you get the picture) on any next gen system ? :S
@R4gn4r0k: What I mean is there are plenty of games like them available. For example, Uncharted is a fairly standard cover-based shooter. There's no real shortage of those on Steam.
Just curious, if a Steam Machine does come out as a competition to the consoles, are the games downloaded for you to keep forever, or is the Machine strictly a Streaming Gaming only console? Because honestly, I was a little impress by that prototype controller shown a few months ago.
Forgive my ignorance, for I'm not a PC gamer nor am I familiar with Steam at all.

Ah I see :p
Would be cool though, if steam could actually play games

But ok
Can you play Forza5, DR3, KI, Ryse, KZ SF, Knack, Resogun, Super Mario 3D. Peggle2, ec ect on this Steam box?

Of course you can't. There is a lot of Nintendo, Sony and MS money behind those games.
Can you play them on one single system though?

Nope, but that's not what the OP was about.
"I just can not understand why you would buy a new console"
Even a $1500 steam machine can only play a small handful of games. Barely any games come out in OpenGL at launch.
Dual-boot solves that.
Then you're still paying quite a bit more for a PC on your TV you could have probably built yourself and you've gained nothing.
This first batch of Steam Machines is not meant to replace game consoles but rather compliment existing PCs. The whole idea is that Steam OS is friendly for a living room situation, not a desktop computer. All of the interface has been built for a remote control or controller, not a mouse and a keyboard.
Steam big picture mode alleviates most of that problem, but unless you're streaming from a PC that's more powerful, you won't be gaming right on SteamOS that much without spending an extra $100 on Windows to dual boot.

"I just can not understand why you would buy a new console"
True, the OP pitted the PC against all consoles, so you weren't wrong :P
I just can not understand why you would buy a new console when you can wait for a little bit and get a Steam Machine.
Because it'll cost 2-3x more then a next-gen console, that's why. I could build a PC gaming rig for less and still enjoy all the games on SteamBox and other games NOT on STEAM. It's obvious the SteamBox is aimed toward hardcore PC gamers, but I doubt they will give up their epic PC rigs for a SteamBox.
