I just can not understand why you would buy a new console when you can wait for a little bit and get a Steam Machine.

Because it'll cost 2-3x more then a next-gen console, that's why. I could build a PC gaming rig for less and still enjoy all the games on SteamBox and other games NOT on STEAM. It's obvious the SteamBox is aimed toward hardcore PC gamers, but I doubt they will give up their epic PC rigs for a SteamBox.

I want to think you for your reply.....for your avatar alone. Well worth reading.

Basically what Valve has done is this.

They have been watching a decade of players buying lesser powered machines to play games in their living room while the PC is just sitting there in the other room just waiting to be used.

For years they thought 'they will eventually catch on and move the computer to the living room' and when the so called next gen consoles came out they just said 'oh f8ck it lets build a PC and says its for the living room and see if anyone bites'.

In short, Steambox is for suckers but the console market has proven there is a lot of money to be made from suckers

A number of things prove you wrong:

  1. Steam is incredibly successful.
  2. SteamOS is available on all PCs.

-----

Now, you need to provide evidence for your post... Show they have been buying lesser-powered machines, in direct contrast to higher-powered machines/components. You must also link these specifically to gaming... Burden of proof, and all that.

Steam Machine is pointless for us PC Gamers, but it might bring more peasants into nobility.

We really should have a hermit scale.

Consolites = serfs

low end machines/steambox= Barons

midrange PCs= Counts

highend PC's= Dukes

hermit moderators = royalty

All seems legit to me

Our very own SW feudal system!

I will send an email to our lord and saviour.

the serfs might kick up a riot though. nothing a cattle prod couldn't prevent.

I think Steam Machines are going to be stuck in this awkward position between PC's and consoles where they cost significantly more than consoles, but not necessarily much less than a mid to high end fully featured PC. I'm still unsure who the target market of Steam Machines are, and I'm not sure why PC gamers regard it any differently than, say, Alienware computers (which most PC gamers hate).

I think it's more about Steam OS than the system itself. Someone who wants a quick HTPC might grab one, but you can make your own steam machine too, or just install SteamOS to your desktop and use that with Big Picture mode.

I'd rather just pick and choose from any one of the currently available Linux distros and install steam onto it. I'm not really expecting much from SteamOS, but I'm still interested in it none the less.

What's the price? and the game library?

there is no single steam machine. there's a few with different hardware and prices.

So basically, it's the same deal as the PC where you really can't be fair in comparing to consoles since all they are going to be are small form factor PCs with steam OS installed.

alright, so still not worth it

Well, next-gen consoles are also starting from ground zero i.e. zero legacy support.

I'm not talking about replacing a decent gaming pc, I'm talking about picking between a Steam Machine and what people are calling "next gen" consoles.

Those "next gen" consoles have something called games....

My understanding is that the entire STEAM library will be available...am I wrong?

Yes, you are wrong. There are very few games on Linux at the moment so you will need a Windows OS which makes it pointless. Much like this thread.

It'll will support all Steam Linux games. Steam Windows games can be streamed from a PC running Windows.

Because most hardcore gamers I know have decent theater type sound system. Most PC gamers I know, don't. Why would they since they usually play their games on a desktop with small 12" speakers. The only non hardcore gamers I know who don't have a decent sound system are my nephews and a couple of old friends who don't game that much. Everyone else has a nice setup with large speakers, subwoofer and a decent receiver.

I know when I was on PC, I usually just used headphones. Granted, they were kickass headphones. Since I moved to consoles I went with a surround system. It's not the top teir and I'm sure it's not as nice as Gio's, but they are a nice ste up from using headphones. My favorite thing about switching to consoles is moving from a 27inch monitor to a 60 inch tv. What a huge difference.

Have you used it? It sounds bad. I jsut think Valve is thowing money away and wasting time that could be spent elsewhere. I mean, why not just have a PC? You don't get the awesome exclusives to consoles, you don't get the few advantages to PC gaming, you are stuck with Steam....I mean wtf is the poin t of it?

Microsoft shill Kevin Dent went off on the Steam Box today, so it's pretty obvious to lemmings that it's a threat to them. All that extra power for the same price and no cancerous XBL community? Xbone ain't got a fuckin' chance.

Same conversation, different day. PC gamers are getting desperate for that console audience. Another fun fact for you, let us assume that people want to realistically purchase a Steam Machine, do you think the developers/publishers would embrace Steam Machines?....

Steam Machine can't even run it's own games without the help of a Windows Machine.

At least Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo's Machines can run their games without the use of a 2nd system.

Steam Machine is a joke.

Note that the next-gen consoles are starting without legacy support.
