I am seriously perplexed at the amount of people that want a one console market. You trash the competition like it is a bad thing.
In a way I hope some of these geniuses get their wish. The ramifications will be interesting to say the least.
Publishers are already looking at going mobile. Many developers are already stating that making AAA titles is getting increasingly difficult and expensive. Mobile on the other hand is easy, effective, and the cost return is minimal. Enough publishers start switching and there will be no more games on consoles besides first party titles.
There is a reason a lot of analysists are predicting the death of console gaming. Calling consoles dinsosaurs and the like. The money is in mobile games and publishers know it. Each generation is getting more expensive to develop for, but the consumer wont have increased costs. You people will resist any attempt developers attempt to make more profits. Screaming that they are milking money from their customers.
The combined platform totals of the three systems is the potential for good multiplatform releases. The more games sold, even if its on a competing platform, is good for the industry. All the signs are there. I do not own an Xbox One, but I sure as hell hope it has success. Your idea that if Microsoft gets out someone will be there to replace them. I wouldn't be so sure. Anyone looking to get into the traditional console market would have to make their mind up that they are going to lose revenue right from the start. It isn't until you get a good install base that you start making money from the investments. Amazon might get into the games business, but look for it to be much like the Ouya or the like. Why do you think that Sony and Microsoft want a long console lifespan? Its because if they didn't they would be doing nothing more than losing money on these ventures.
No one is looking to get into the traditional console market. It is archaic. The returns do not show up into later in the platform. You have to spend a shit ton of money in R&D, and then make the money in the long term. GOD forbid you have a RROD. If a normal (non multibillion dollar company) had put out a Playstation 3, or had a 360 RROD issue, they would have went bankrupt.
Apple isn't going to get into the regular console business. No one is. Keep dreaming. You don't make enough money off of them. Apple is making more money off of games being on their phones then a damn console would make them.
