Casual and hardcore are real and are very different. A casual gamer is like my wife who plays puzzle games and search and find games on her pc. Casual gamer is my mom playing solitaire for an hour a day. Casual is my wifes parents coming over 2 times in 16 years and play 2 games for 30 minutes.

Hardcore is when I played medal of honor allied assault spearhead on pc for 2 days straight. Hardcore is me playing SSX for hours and hours a day to get over 700k on a game you shouldnt be able to score that much on. Hardcore is me on COD2 "360" playing every day untill I can snipe 2 people "1 of them dropping from a roof" then me throw a granade and kill someone else coming in and then hit the next person with the buttof my gun.Hardcore is me playing Twisted Metal 1 and 2 for hours on end and NEVER EVER getting beat by anyone.

I think what people mean to say about NOT BEING CASUAL and HARDCORE is this......There is NO HARDCORE OR CASUAL GAME. Any game can be as hardcore or casual as you make it.

Well maybe not a sticky, but you read several posts a day with people arguing about hardcore and casual and if there is really either one. So I figured I would clear it up. I think its pretty clear from my stand point. Anyone else have anything to add or you agree pretty much?

Right, and there's nothing in between.

There are non-gamers (those who play solitare on the PC or suduko on the bus)

There are casuals (those who play madden with thier buddies and buy crap like buillet proof 50cent or true crimes; or kids who play shadow the hedgehog)

There are gamers (those who research games and play quality stuff and have a pretty fine taste for it)

And then there are hardcores (those who making gaming their number one hobby and put alot of time and money into it)

Time spent playing has nothing to do with someone being "hardcore" or "casual."

The only difference between the two is the dedication to the hobby itself.

A casual gamer generally only has one system and a handful of games to play, and when they are done with games, they trade them in for new ones. They generally know little about anything in the industry besides the games they have interest in and spend very little time learning about other games that might interest them. The "play what they like."

A hardcore gamer has many systems, usually spanning many generations as well as a very large collection of games, many of which haven't even been played yet. They never trade in games and buy games even when they don't need anything new to play. They know an incredible amount about the industry and all the games they enjoy. They spend lots of time researching games in the genres they enjoy as well as time experimenting with new games they may think they might enjoy.

I'm a hardcore gamer... but sometimes I don't get much time at all to play games due to other obligations... but that doesn't stop me from investing what free-time I have and lots of my money into the hobby itself.

I've invested thousands into gaming, have a huge array of games, a bunch of consoles, a nice tv. Like to read up on the industry and partake in the community. But if what you're saying is hardcore, I'm no hardcore gamer. Casual is the way for me.

I disagree I think it has everything to do with the amount of time you put into a game per sitting and how often you have those sittings. I can see your point though, but my train of thought seems to be in line with what some in the industry deem hardcore(blizzard).

It really has nothing to do with it. I have the ability at points to sit down and game for 14 hours straight but rarely do I get the time to do it. If I game 1 hour a week because I have work and university... I'm still a hardcore gamer by my dedication to the hobby. It is still my number one pastime regardless of how little free-time I actually have. Time spent isn't what makes someone hardcore.

If someone who owns a Wii and Wiisports plays it religiously 3-4 hours a day... and only owns that game and system... then they are more hardcore than me when I can only game a couple hours a week? That makes no sense.

You may know about the industry and it maybe your number 1 past time, but at the end of the day, if someone puts more time into something and are more dedicated they are more hardcore. Your example was one of dedication, and funny enough one of the meanings of hardcore is dedication.

Yes? People who play halo and gears for hours turn around and say they are hardcore gamers, when those are some very casual games.

There is no definite hardcore or casual gamer. It's all what you consider yourself to be. I game a lot in a week. Many nights I have all nighters. I know a lot about the industry. I own all three consoles. But again, I'm no hardcore gamer. I play casually.

Casual game=easy, and reach as many people as possible across a variety of gametypes and likes and dislikes.

Hardcore game=ment to reach a select few who want a certain thing in a game.

Yes they are. You bought 75 games that you haven't or barely played while they have one that they play alot. I know a guy who has tons more games than me and yet he only plays them once every few days, he hasn't beaten many of them. While gaming is his main hobby he clearly CASUALLY plays these games and that's exactly how I define a casual gamer.

I agree with this post. I have many consoles, games and handhelds. I usually play games for atleast three or more hours a day, know quite a bit about the industry. It's my main hobby and I have gamed for a long time. Some people would call me a hardcore gamer, yet some, (mostly PC gamers) would say I'm a casual gamer. I don't think I'm either one, just a gamer.

There is always a middle of the road when describing casual and hardcore. You took two of the extremes. I have a roommate who plays java games on Pogo for about 6 hours a day. Would you call that hardcore? I also have a friend who plays COD4 and GeOW2 for maybe 2 hours a week. Would you call that hardcore or softcore? Hardcore can either be based on the game or the amount of time played or both.

Games cannot be "hardcore" as the term refers to individuals, not things like games.

This nonsense over labels such as "hardcore" or "casual" needs to stop as it serves to divide gamers into a "us versus them" mentality. This attitude is expressed by gaming elitists who selfishly want to maintain the status quo in a hobby they arrogantly claim is exclusively for them. Hate to say this, but gaming is was never intended for the few, but for the many. All who play games, regardless of their dedication, are by definition gamers.
