A study has been published that claims that releasing a demo for a game actually hurts its sales. They claim that trailers are the best way to push a game and point to the most successful games not having demos.

They even rigged up a fancy graph to try and prove their point.

We, however, don't believe this for a minute.

PS3 Sales

360 Sales

Here we see that sales are clearly higher for games that only released trailers, but let's think about this for a minute.

Two of the highest selling games last year were Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, both of which this group claims had no demo. However, both of these games had multiplayer betas. Those could basically be considered "exclusive demos".

BioShock had a demo and went on to sell a whole mess of copies. It appears that good games sell well. A lot of bad games get demos and that could very well hurt their sales because gamers get to try them and realize that they are bad. Without a demo, they might be tricked into buying something that looks good, but actually sucks.

These researchers should re-focus their study to only deal with bad games.

I could believe it

SITUATION 1 - "Played the demo, not interested"

SITUATION 2 - "CRAP, i bought this game and it sucks! they should have made a demo! "

No, bad demos are bad for game sales. If you know your game sucks, why put out a demo? I'm looking at you Hour of Victory. A great demo can make a game that is very little known to the mainstream like Bioshock and make it a certified hit. If devs make better games, they have a better chance of selling well. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

on the consoles, this makes sence, But I dont think its the same way on the PC.....there are deffinetly a lot of PC gamers who refuse to buy games without demo...at the least to make sure they work on their PC's.

I dunno. If a game sucks when you play the demo, you're not gonna wanna buy the whole game, but if you think a game is crap you could end up liking the demo. So it goes both ways.

Well, thing with a demo is you might not buy the game. If all the hype is built up so much you just might buy it without experience and think it sucks.

Very few demo's have ever made me purchase a game I would not have otherwise. But I have played a lot of demo's that insured I would not buy a game I may have tried.

i dont know how i feel about it. to me, playing a demo is like renting a game....without the money, so thats a plus. on the other hand, what ever happened to just taking a chance on a game (this goes for the reviews too), but games cost too much to be taking chances on them. like lost planet, if i would have played the demo, i would have never bought the game.

Same. The demo grabbed me. I had not been anticipating that game at all. I am glad, too. Seems a lot of the gripes people had with the game were based off really high expectations, of witch I had none.

That's probably true... however, it doesn't effect us because we're not making money on the games. If a game got a perfect review and I played the demo and it sucked I wouldn't go out and buy it... on the other hand if there was no demo I might be inclined to drop the money on it out of impulse.

It's good for us that there are demos, but bad for the devs/publishers... I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see as many of them next gen.

I disagree. i believe no demo results in an enormous increase in rental (console) or pirates, but i do not have the data to back it up.

Even if Crackdown isn't your type of game, you have to realize how great of a demo it put out too. Bioshock and Crackdown were probably the best demos this gen so far. Bioshock you really got a feel for the setting and it made you want to find out more. Crackdown on the other hand did it differently by letting you get a huge chunk of only messing with Gameplay features, it didn't let you do any part of the story however like most demos. You got to try everything in Crackdown demo that you would have access to in the retail game with a limited time frame. More games need to do what Bioshock and Crackdown did. Either set it up where you have to find more or let the user get a full understanding for the gameplay mechanics.

interesting

maybe they should make better demos

the 360 Bioshock demo is one of the best i've played .. i was already desperate for the game, but the demo didn't let me down

it was like a teaser for me, but would have definately helped sell copies

Exactly. I was interested in uncharted but unsure how it played, its demo showed me how fun it was and convinced me to buy it. Downloaded flatout demo for psp and i hated it, saved me from buying a POS game.

Of course they're going to affect sales, but companies would have stopped making them if there wasn't a significant redeeming advantage.

Demos are a bit of a double-edged sword. I would have bought Blue Dragon had there been no demo, however i bought Crackdown just a day after playing the demo, so it really all depends, they hurt and help sales.

Thats cause we ase gamers can actualy try out and see how crapy theiur games are with a Demo, Which we don't in a trailer and then have to actualy buy the game just to get stabbed in the face by the fact that the game sucks monkey.

It should be noted that the Blacksite:Area 51 demo was pretty awesome, but that didn't help sales or reviews.

if the game sucks then obviously. if it owns, the demo should usually follow i.e. uncharted. however i think burnout paradise suffered from this. the actual game pwned but the demo wasnt bad but paled in comparison

Hum... Interesting. It seems feasible enough, considering how demos aren't so good as they were back in the day you could get a whole chapter of Doom and when you finished it you would feel impelled to play the remaining ones.

Really, Demo's are good for sales if the game dosent suck. Look at turok and conan, If I made a game that sucked as bad as those I would not reasease demos, just touched up screen shots.

Often, a demo is entertaining enough that you don't bother buying the full game. Or a demo might show that you don't like the game. If there's no demo, you can't actually form an opinion until you buy the game.

for me crysis was a pretty good demo, just because it was nice and long and gave a real taste of the actual gameplay. Also, you can make custom maps, for the demo!!! Crazy!!!!

There have been a number of games that I probably wouldn't have bought without playing a demo for it first. That said, for bad games it's obviously a bad idea to put out a demo.

ive bought certain games primarily because of the demo. i bought the bigs, and i dont really like baseball games. but i downloaded the demo and couldnt stop playing it, so i bought it. but MOST games, like blue dragon, i avoided because of the demo. id strongly agree with the claim that demos are somewhat bad for games sales but they are good for me. as by many demos ive saved a lot of wasted money goin towards a crap game.

Yea, I see why trailer is up there, it teases you to buying the game. Ive seen trailers that make the game look so good and then I play it and I am bitterly disappointed. Demos bring in the dissapointment earlier so you dont have to buy the game, once you buy it, you have spent the $40-60 and the profits are in... :|

I agree because some games after playing the demo I would never buy while others I can just go back and play the demo when I am in the mood for a certain game (mostly sport games). I have played a few demos and thought I must own the game as well though. Like COD2 and FNR3 on the 360 are great examples.

They're not bad as long as the devs make a good game and put out a good demo. For example, Uncharted. I wasn't going to get it, but when I tried the demo I love it and now that games is a must own for anyone.

Of course they would never admit that most likely case for this is that trailers create hype without actualy letting you play the game to know what its like (eg, a potentialy false sense of awsome by manipulating collections of cutscnese and vioce overs to make them look like gameplay or useing doctered gamepla footage or even pre-rendered CGI) and demo can expose potentialy expose the game as "not worth the price tag", Wich is what a lot of demos do. Demo can also be made poorly (eg. poor representation of a good game, there a quite a few of these around).

Crysis demo made me have second thoughts. And in the end, I didn't buy the full the game.

Bioshock demo definitely influenced my purchase decision in a positive way. And if it weren't for the first Devil May Cry demo I wouldn't have been into the series.

Call of Duty 4 demo was also a good call on EA's part.

so they want you to buy thier crapy games instead of testing them out first? thats kinda putting the screws to the gamers imo. if you want your game to sell good, make it a damn good game. if you cant do that, then shut down your cheap studio.

i think it goes both ways. it all depends, i think if its a good game and they put togeather a good demo that lets you get a good feel, and taste off the game then it will help sales. but if its a bad game and they put together a bad demo then its going to hurt sales. or if its a good game but if they put togeather a bad demo then it could also hurt a good game's sales. it's all about makeing the demo not to long but just long enuff and picking a good level and makeing sure theres no glitchs and it runs smooth and looks good. for me if the game got good rateings then i will watch game play videos off it then if those look good then i will rent it and if i like it then i will buy it.

I think it has something to do with high profile games not having demos in the first place. Which games did it look at?
