I could believe it

SITUATION 1 - "Played the demo, not interested"

SITUATION 2 - "CRAP, i bought this game and it sucks! they should have made a demo! "

Completely 100% true because I have said that before

Top-selling titles Halo 3, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty 4, CoD: World at War, etc all had public betas (effectively demos ) - so that does cast doubt on the "beta is bad" thought pattern. Besides, we're looking at rather off data - big sellers like Oblivion and Fallout 3 didn't have demos because of the difficulty of "Framing" a moment that showcased the game, it wasn't an intentional "we shouldn't have a demo" thought, while many less ambitious (and worse selling) titles were able to offer up demos.

-

We might simply be showing that big ambitious titles aren't able to get a demo together, not that a demo really hurts sales. Of course, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) recently pulled its public view on the demo from Xbox LIVE - so, who knows what companies will make of such a dubious study.

i think there should be more demos out there. i think that really only the bad games come out with a demo. couple of games thinking about is banjo kazzooie and skate. i liked both of those games really the only game i bought because it had a great demo.

Only demo that I found worth playing was Valkyria Chronicles to see if the combat system wouldn't be annoying. Sad thing is I still haven't bought the game.

It seems like a lot of the heavy hitters (that you know are going to be multi-million sellers) such as Halo and GTA don't bother putting demos out - that could be skewing the numbers a bit.

Demos for BAD games may affect sales , but demos for good games usually boost sales.

I believe it. I have seen plenty of people on SW say "I was looking forward to this game but after playing the demo I think I'll pass" I like having demos for that exact reason.

on the consoles, this makes sence, But I dont think its the same way on the PC.....there are deffinetly a lot of PC gamers who refuse to buy games without demo...at the least to make sure they work on their PC's.cobrax75
Like me, I don't buy a game without a demo unless I play it at a friends house (which is a demo...). Trailers can easily be the most cinematic parts of the game or best scenes in an otherwise buggy mess. If a demo gives you a good hour to 2 hours of gameplay you get a basic idea of how it works. If a game runs solid for that long the full product shouldn't have any problems.

probably true as you realize the game isn't worth buying after the demo

$60 is dirt cheap how about the $120-$140 console games cost here in nz. ($75-$85 was over $100usd at one stage)
