Let me start by saying that I am a PS3 owner that greatly enjoys Ratchet & Clank, generally dislikes the Wii and current day Nintendo.
Now that I got that out of the way...
...to satisfy a craving I have had for Super Mario Galaxy until I can put aside some money for a Wii (yes, I will buy a Wii-a system that I dislike-just for SMG), I recently watched GameSpot's Super Mario Galaxy marathon, in which they played a pretty good chunk of the game live. So even though I have not played the game, I have a very good idea of how it plays, what it's level design is like, what it looks like, etc.
After watching this magical game for an extended period of time, it simply boggles my mind that some (these are relatively few in number, but they still boggle my mind) people still say Ratchet and Clank is better. I know it's all subjective to a point, but there IS a way to look at games objectively by way of common ground using established video game standards. I keep trying to see what could be objectively better about Ratchet and Clank and I keep coming up short.
Sure, it murders SMG as far as technical visuals go (as it is on PS3, it should), but Super Mario Galaxy's psychedelic art sytle is far more interesting to look at IMO. This is especially true when one considers that Insomniac has been rehashing the same art style/locales ad nauseum for the past 5 years or so. Don't get me wrong, Ratchet and Clank: ToD is a gorgeous game, but I feel that more thought was put into SMG's art design.
However, it's the gameplay in SMG that truly slaughters that found in R&C.
These are the reasons why:
1.) Its levels designs are far more inventive and clever. The fact that physics come into play and the levels take the form of these incredibly inventive planet-like structures makes R&C seem rather linear and typical. Ratchet and Clank attempts to build a galaxy, but it comes across as being a typical action/platform world with a futrustic spin, whereas SMG truly nails what outer space would look and feel like.
2.) It's more challenging. SMG actually has pitfalls and puzzles, the kind of stuff that made classic platforming games challenging. R&C has lots of cool gadgets and some mildly interesting gameplay mechanics, but it is an extremely easy game that mostly involves shooting up stuff. The physics in SMG makes it seem like one actually has to keep their balance, etc and the way one must navigate the levels forces the player to think a bit more. R&C just seems so "mindless" in comparison.
3.) SMG is a departure from earlier entries, whereas R&C is part of a continuing rehash cycle that needs to stop. ToD plays EXACTLY the same as past Ratchet & Clank games. I feel that R&C: ToD should have scored higher than 7.5--it deserved an 8.5--but I can't exactly blame the reviewer. R&C: ToD adds nothing new except for frivolous details like the pirate costume, etc.
4.) R&C is far more predictable. You pretty much know what you're getting the whole game through. With Super Mario Galaxy, there is always a surprise. It was simply a joy to see the game turn into a 2D sidescroller on occasion
5.) SMG's boss battles are far more inventive, both in art design and the way you defeat them. Sure, SMG's bosses look easy as hell, but they are very cleverly designed. There is always an interesting mechanic used to defeat them. In R&C, you basically just shoot at the boss until their life meter is exstinguished.
6.) SMG's enemy designs are more interesting-looking and varied, making R&C's collection of robots look rather repetitive. I mean, how can a robot from R&C possibly compete with the chain chompers and those living bullets heads?
7.) SMG has a more interesting soundtrack. There's more variety, more quirkiness and the songs fit the stages better.
I'm sure I could come up with more reasons for SMG destroying R&C, but I'm tired of typing.
Basically, I don't see a case for R&C being better in any area besides graphics. If anybody can enlighten me, I'd be interested in what that person has to say.
Also: PLEASE don't litter this thread with these kind of posts:
"I like R&C better cuz it's funner to me."
or
"I just like it better."
or
"Blog it."
or
"Opinions...everybody has them."
or
"They're two different kind of games. Can't compare."
I will ignore that kind of deflection. I want real objective reasoning here.
