LOL, this is some of the lamest and most ridiculous damage control I've seen on fanboy wars, I mean System Wars. SMG is the best game of the year, deal with it. If you don't like it, go somewhere else. That's the popular phrase to say here on a Gamespot forum I do believe.

In advance, sorry to any future unreplied arguments, but arguing the philosphy of fun isn't what I came here for, and that's what it's turning into.

I think you can say what you like, that mario is not any more fun than a beer and a board game, but your lack support for such an argumetn. I'll see if you can raise some when I get back, but atm in the idea of measurable fun which you seem to believe impossible while on a gaming forum arguing scores made based on the idea of measuring fun, I think I would have more fun watching my bro paly chibi robo than listening to this headache enducing twisted logic that no game designer should ever make a game around..

In short, be back later.

Vandalvideo

Its my opinion, something that is simply not disprovable in any way, shape or form. I've already established that fun is entirely subjective in all its capacity and you CAN NOT measure fun. its as simple as that. Why should I buy a 50 dolalr fun game without story when I can buy a 5 dolalr fun game without story? I simple expect more out of a game than "fun". Can you not understand that? I'm not talking about relative fun here, I'm saying I expect MORE than just fun from my video games. If I wanted mindless self indulgence I'd go buy carnival games.

I hate to be the one who breaks this to you but the main purpose of video games is entertainment, in other words having fun. Yes quite insane I know but its the truth, engrossing stories interesting dialouge and philosophical question can all be found in books, it seems to me that you would be better off reading Dostoyevsky than playing Video Games. Fun is subjective but it can be compared, for example, I have more fun playing Mario Galaxy than I have playing Plinko, that is why I pay 50$ for it. That is whay I pay for Video Games, to have fun. If you simply don't want to have fun I suggest you drop 10$ and go buy yourself a decent novel it will satisfy your needs and would stop this silly arguement.

Unfortunately, you haven't said anything I haven't already adressed previously. Since fun is entirely subjective, you CAN NOT compare fun as a universal. Just because you find Mario galaxy to be "more fun" than plinko does not by any stretch of the imagination make that a universal fact. Sorry, it just doesn't work that way. Fun has to be a constant for the sake of derailing into an entirely different arguement here. Just because you find Galaxies more fun than Plinko doesn't mean that will hold true for other people. I may hypotheticall have just as much fun playing Plinko than I would Galaxies. Thats why I really am not focusing on relative fun here. I'm focusing on externalities. I'm saying with fun as a constant, why should I pay 50 dollars for a fun game with no story when I can pay 5 dollars for a fun gam with no story? Fun doesn't justify the price point. I made a valid request that I require more than just fun in a product I pay exhorbant ammounts of money on. Sorry, go fish.

Why should I pay 50$ for a video game with story when I can pay 10$ for a novel which would have a much deeper story? If that is the only aspect in Video Games you care about.

Because not only do you have an engaging story, but you ALSO have the fun that we've previously been talking about. I expect not only fun from a product that costs that much, but also a great story

ok fine listen I understand what you're saying, my favourite genre is Adventure games so deep stories matter to me, but when you look at the video games as a whole they don't rely on story lines soley to be successful. Some of the best games have shallow storylines (e.g Zelda) but that doesn't make them any less acclaimed the reason being they deliver the main purpose of the video game medium which is entertainment. Games such as Zelda and Mario entertain us through gameplay while games such as Monkey Island and Grim Fandango entertain us through storylines. When a game has both thats wonderful but the fact that a game is focuse on one aspect doesn't detract from its merit. In the end, if you wish to play games that only have deep stories you're going to miss out on some of the masterpieces of gaming. But to each his own.

This is one of the best games on the Wii console.

1.The graphics look great in spite of the wii not being very technically powerful, the art direction is great, the edges and lines are Anti Aliased, and the colors are vibrant. The models are fluent and animated well. The camera is average, and sometimes doesn't zoom in enough, but that is a total nitpick.

2.The Sound is fitting to levels, and isn't repetitive or recycled. It is just the right volume that you can hear everything. The voice acting..... Well, there is a total of maybe 20 lines in the whole game, so it really doesn't matter.

3.The Game play is great. I don't really like platformers, but even I loved this. It's always clear what you are supposed to do. The levels are quick, like 4 to 5 minutes maybe, so you'll constantly be exploring new areas and planets. The addition of starbits a welcome addition, and allow you to stun enemies, or pay "Tolls' to in game characters.

4. The controls work great, and feel like they were built from the ground up to take advantage of the motion sensing, which is breath of fresh air as opposed to the 100's of bad ports. They are very reliable, and make sense, and are easy to execute.

5. The story isn't great, but in all honesty , it doesn't need story. The princess got kidnapped. again. go save her. good enough.

It's really just a symbol of the wii: Innovative, Different, bright, easy to use, and fun.

I agree. It's the best game on the Wii by far; but in a year with titles like Orange Box, Crysis, BioShock, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4 and World in Conflict, it's simply wrong that Galaxy beat them all out for Game of the Year. It's nowhere near the quality of those titles, however fun and silly it may be.

You know that not having much support, which I do have some people in here agreeing which you so carefully ignored, doesn't affect my arguement in any way, shape or form. It never has and never will. Thats why the whole "Fun is subjective" thread a few months ago went on for so long. Oh but it does, vandi, it does. We can never have just 1 guy say he wins an argument or everyone would just say they've won the argument and systemwars would be over out of pure ignorance. Everyone here is a spectator, and I've turned more to my side then you have to yours. My side grows strong, and that 1 guy who might support you but hasn't joined the argument at all is looking rather flimsy.

It doesn't change your argument, even though if you know what's good for you it should, but it should be a pretty clear sign of who's winning. Remember when I said I had the upper hand? You took the idea of fun far to scientifically and began babbling nonsense that does not represent the human mind at all.

what i mean is that its pretty plain to see how much smg pales in comparison to the atmosphere of bioshock and assassin's creed. it has no multiplayer capability which even if it did, would be obliterated by halo 3 and cod4. its on a console that prohibits high resolution detail.

The fact that you compare a platformer with shooters its enough proof that you have no idea of what are you talking about.

Nintendo games rarely have technical issues? Where have you been? People have found bugs where you can beat Super Mario 64 in about an hour. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess had a bug where you could get stuck in a room(Nitendo went as far as giving replacement discs for it) and Ocarina of Time had a similar glitch in the Water temple. And Super Mario Sunshine had tons of glitches(just look it up on youtube, you'll find plenty of stuff). Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow,Gold, Silver and Crystal allhad a pokemon clonig glitches and Red and Blue had a glitch that could corrupt your save data. The list goes on and on.

Nostalgia should not be a factor in why a game should recieve GOY. and niether should subject material(Reason why Gears won last year. Not because of how violent it was, but how fun it was).

Galaxy does not represent what all Nintendo games are. There are alot of buggy Nintendo games, not all of them relly on Nostalgia(and they never really should) and there are some that are quite violent. Galaxy is good because it is a highly refined platformer.

It really doesn't matter what other people think. Just because a large group of peopl e want to jump off a bridge doesn't make it the smartest thing to do. The fact of the matter is you can pull the support card all you want, but its just a veiled attempt to avoid the actuality of my arguement. You have yet to adress any of my points, instead opting to stuff loaded words in my mouth and pretending I cried wolf. I have NOT bashed Mario, I have NOT said stories make games funner, I have NOT said that mario is "just as fun as a board game". You are taking everything I've said out of context and swaying it to your own deluded arguement. Let me put it simply, go back and read the last few pages, half the people arguing against me at some point in time said, "I see what you're saying" or "I agree somewhat". If you would understand that you'd understand that people are accepting what I'm saying, they just are nitpicking at how I'm saying it because they don't want to hear the truth. These are things I've established so far that you haven't been able to discredit yet, that I have provided ample proof there-of. A) Fun is subjective and CAN NOT be measured. B) Mario doesn't have a deep story. C) I think that games should offer more than just mindless fun for the price point they are asking, because I can just as easily get fun from a board game. You still haven't answered my qusetion, why buy a 50 dollar fun game with crappy story when I can buy a 5 dolalr game with a crappy story? You haven't answered cause you can't answer, because you realize the truth behind what I'm saying. Just because Mario is fun does not mean that I should go out and purchase it. You can NOT force your opinions and thoughts on to other people, thats not how the world works. Learn to accept dissenting poitns of view for once in awhile, it will greatly benefit you. I simple require more from a multi-dozen dollar game than just some fun I can get elsewhere for significantly cheaper. I require extra incentives. Its as simple as that.

Mr. vandi, you once again jump and say something stupid. Mario is mindless fun? Have you ignored my argument all this time? And YES, influence does have a large impact on system wars. We fight in an argument for influence.

Once again, I state the way your oddball mind is working. Fun either equals 1 or 0, and once fun equals 1, the fun EXPIRIENCE gets filled with story elements and such. It makes not a lick of sense and you leave any highschool psych teacher shaking their head in shame.

And once again kitty, you jump and assume I even said Mario is mindless fun. Have you ignored that entire post? Reread it. You're doing me a disserive by CONTINUING to misconsture what I'm saying. I did not say that its mindless fun at all, I said if I WANT mindless fun I will play a board game. Its that simple. It makes all the sense in the world, because I provided PROOF to back up my statement, a game development article that said supported my statements. Look, unless you want to provide PROOF that you can measure fun, I suggest you shape up and ship out, because I wont listen to you anymore if you're just going to continue to misconstrue my words again and again.

Anyone still in this thread, isn't it blatently obvious he just called mario galaxy a mindless game?

Mr. Vandi, just because you didn't word something exactly how I put it doesn't mean you never said it. Wording is everything here, you never change the topic off of mario galaxy bashing when you said that.

No, we already went over this. Its called a non-sequitur point of logic. They are points of logic that have nothiong in common. Its just a listing of points I've made thruought the topic. So please, stop twisting my words.

The fact that you compare a platformer with shooters its enough proof that you have no idea of what are you talking about.

neonvzla

you make no sense. you are saying a platformer can't have graphics like halo or cod4 or gears of war. gears was in fact compared to a platformer, but where you jump from cover to cover instead of on top of blocks or across chasms. we are talking about goty, not best platformer, and not best fps. so if you're telling me that the two genres cant be compared, then how can you objectively name a goty..

Maybe a black hole opened up and lead me 20 post back to argument B-2 so I could totally tell you didn't just say mario galaxy was mindless in point C, or maybe you're just using stupid loopholes that make no esne to avoid a stupid statement.

yup it was obvious he was reffering to mario galaxy

why else would he bring that argument up?

vandi's running around in all sorts of loops, his arguments are all over the place.....all together he's just a mess right now

regardless of which games he was referring to, i'd have to agree that mario is pretty mindless. you are jumping around space with a wiimote for no good reason and with no logic. i'd say that's pretty mindless in my book. i'd also say there's nothing wrong with it if you are having fun.

but this all goes back to the original point of my thread, which after 10 pages i can see has been completely missed.

It was a general statement, I made no allusion to mario galaxy anywhere in that sentence. I expect more out of games than mindless fun. Thats it. I'm not referring to anything. Those are my expectations.

What he's refering to is mindless fun, not mindless story. The gameplay is extremely well thought out. Pacing is near perfect minus the beginning, and the level design offers manywell thought out puzzles.
