Obviously Nintendo does not know you have friends. It certainly came as a surprise to me!
That being said, can you prove you got friends you could play the game with?

People expecting a respectable online showing from Nintendo? That's interesting.
DAY ONE CANNOT WAIT! WAHOO! (most likely my game of the year)

Well, when Nintendo decided to put a paywall on it, there was hope.
But yeah, everyone's hope should already be destroyed by now. Turned out they were just greedy and had no plans to improve.
Look, I'll probably still get Super Mario Maker 2. Is the way Nintendo handles online play bs? You betcha. But I have Smash Bros. and Splatoon 2, and a few other Ninty games with online, and I still manage to enjoy them. People shouldn't blame this specific game for a longstanding problem on Nintendo's part.
I might not agree with KBFloyd, but in a way maybe he's right about matchmaking being more important than playing with friends. I mean, I have two buddies added on my Switch. They aren't generally creative guys, I'm not sure how much they would actually contribute to making fun, new stages to play. It would be cool to play online co-op in other peoples' stages with them, but still, they themselves probably wouldn't add much to SMM2.
For a game like SMM2, you want to go search the database and see these awesome stages made by experimental folks, and game-breakers. Every now and then a straightforward stage will be great. But for something more wild or ambitious, expect the big fans of this game to put out the best content.

Sure. But there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to also play with friends. If Nintendo are worried that people will cheat their way up the leaderboards (as they tried to pass off as the reason) they'd just have to make you not get points when playing with friends. Problem fixed, gamers happy. But no. Let's remove the whole option for no reason at all instead.
I really don't like when Nintendo assume their fans are morons.

That's an effective business model though. It also works for apple.
Soon Nintendo is going to be making sure that they're games are only sold and delivered along roads paved from 1983-1991 or something.....
IN general fans are nostalgic and stuff Nintendo is th eone case where that's reversed and it's the developers who are loaded with nostalgia...
Also
Doesn't affect me, I have no friends. Lol
