Super Smash Brothers retail debut underwhelming for the #1 console

I saw bigger lines at Gamestop for less hyped games like Bioshock.

There wasn't even a line at mass retailers like Walmart.

I would think the #1 anticipated game of 2008 for the #1 selling console would have more debut night craziness, wouldn't you?

Does it just prove that most Wii owners are casual non-gamers? Only true gamers wait in line for the big games at midnight.

Did you see the Japanese launch? The retailer counted 500 people in line, that's like... the Xbox 360 launch times 3.

The Japanese may love it, but obviously North America wasn't as thrilled. It will still sell well, I just thought it was wierd how dead the opening night debut party was.

Nintendo games dont sell on three days of hype, they sell on five years worth of word of mouth.

I didn't check out my nearest EB, but stores like Walmart were completely sold out in my city. Plus, I've never seen a lineup at any EB ever. I find everyone reserves their copy and EB only orders a little more than what is reserved. So there is no need to line up.

I don't think anyone needs to worry. Even NA loves Smash Brothers. The game is going to do well. It is stupid to think beause one person didn't witness a line-up at one store that must mean the game will flop.

Or maybe Wii gamers are just more sensible. I don't know what the midnight releases here at Gamestops were like, I personally couldn't be bothered. If you preordered the game, it'll be there when you're ready to pick it up, and even if not, most retailers stock a good supply of Nintendo titles.

Personally, I waited until Sunday morning, went to Target, reminded them that it released today, and got my copy. I expect that retailers are very pleased with the sales, it just wasn't the type of "event" that Halo 3 was.

I think that Gears of War 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Soul Calibur 4 and Tekken 6 is more anticipated than SSBB!!

I live in a fairly small city. There were approx 25 people waiting at midnight at one of the Wal Marts for the release when I got my copy.

Almost forgot. The WM that i went to got about 150-200 copies. There were none left by Monday morning.

I don't know man!! I think all that I listed there is more anticipated...maybe I should add Killzone 2 and Resistance 2....oh and Gran Turismo 5(that's if it makes it out this year!)

I was there at WoW launch. Connections sucked for over a week. I think it was closer to a month before things settled down. also SSBB already as over a million japanese that have it. and now it's getting a big bump from Americans too. this is expected.

I don't think any of those games are more anticipated....yet. They may be when they get closer to release, but as of now they certainly havn't been more anticipated than Brawl. So far this year Brawl has definitely been the most anticipated game. It remains to be seen if it stays that way though.

Ok I'd say so far GTA4 is the #1 anticipated game of this year by far!!!

Err no... it's like yellowandmushy said; only GTA4 is more anticpated then Brawl.

Well, I got my copy pretty easily... no lines, no huge rush. Still, I expect it to be a million seller in the first week here... no gawdy Halo numbers, but great nevertheless.

And only GTAIV could be more anticipated than Brawl this year.

i ordered my Brawl online sometime last week thinking I wouldnt find a copy after Sunday. But yesterday I went to the mall (Queens Plaza) and entered GAMESTOP to see more then 10 copies ready to be purchased (no, not displayed cases).
