Yeah, Nintendo has been dragging their feet with online since gen 6. Like, seriously, they went to the trouble to make a modem for the Gamecube, and did nothing with it. Sega did, that was it. Nintendon't at it's finest.

I don't play online much so it has never been a big deal to me, but I totally get why so many find it frustrating.

At least they didn't use it as an excuse to elevate costs for their online service... yet...

When you think about how bad Nintendo's online has been and how bad it continues to be, it's not surprising that they are very late with this kind of voice chat. Just two gens ago they were completely against the idea of voice chat. Then they half assed it with Switch, and now they're finally doing something that people might actually use.

It's a joke that you have to pay for that feature next year.

Whether it's long past due and a laughing point or not it's about damn time. This will REALLY prop up Nintendos online. Maybe I'll actually play the next Splatoon now.

This might seem like a small and unusual thing, but it isn't.. this could be huge and is one of only 3 things Nintendo needed to completely take over. No trophy/achievement support is stupid... especially since they announced it years ago. It's not a big deal to me, but it is to a lot of people.

If they add trophy support and gain a majority of 3rd party games (which is already confirmed) they will dominate even more... unless the prices are out of control.

Either way, 2 of the 3 isn't a bad start. The ability to chat with friends on CoD, Fortnight, Splatoon, etc. will make it more appealing to the kids and younger population that weren't interested in the Switch before due to low game availability and the ability to properly communicate with their team.

The really weird/crazy thing is that they had Satellaview for SNES in 1995, an absolutely ahead of it's time way to download games, tournaments and magazines. For the SNES! In 1995!

Kids that parents only buy Nintendo will have a chance to play more multiplayer online games, and with voice chat Nintendo's online will boom. Nintendo usually makes high quality games, so we should expect to see a stronger push in the multiplayer sector... it's a win/win. A competitive market drives innovation and quality.

The best part is they are selling that god awful camera and mic that only works for the switch 2 like it's a new thing. Not only that, but I think this may be the first time in the history of gaming that you have a physical controller button that's locked behind a paywall. But hey, at least you now have QR codes from the early 2000's instead of typing in friend codes like it's a free 1995 AOL disk.

@xbox7204life: It is not 2007 anymore. No one cares about Halo/Gears/Forza anymore except Xbots living in nostalgia land. That has always been the problem with Microsoft and Xbox.

They lack the ability to make new and exciting content. They had to buy all their studios and create game pass because they have always sucked at making games since 2001. When has "Microsoft Studios" ever made a good game? Name it. I can think of 30 good nintendo games of the top of my head and good Sony Studio games.

Nintendo makes games people care about, Sony makes games people care about. Xbox hasn't been relevant in the world since Halo 3

There's a reason why Discord is the main reason to use over anything Nintendo throws at it. Nintendo can charge all they really want but Discord remains to be the superior chat is why it was used more when Switch came out.
