My literal reaction:

No, it's Hybrid nature is what's touted. The Switch needs both. Some games need both. Nintendo points this out in their announcement video.
I don't play any of my Switch games purely in TV or Handheld mode. The flexibility of having both is what makes the system what it is and I think it's great. But I feel that if you're going to go the route of a dedicated handheld, then the answer is the DS. If the route is a dedicated TV device, then I feel a pure console is the answer with a form-factor for suited hardware and features.
But as a Hybrid, the Switch absolutely delivers as it is and most of us are/were happy with that.
In this forum the portability is touted. Nintendo release of the Switch Lite is most likely closer to their original intentions. The Switch Lite exist to replace the DS and possibly always been the desired replacement. There willingness to drop the hybrid nature and focus on the portability is more proof of this. This version is going to move more units than ever before because its the replacement for the 3DS.
In this forum, yes. But it's touted by the usual names that don't want to acknowledge the system as a hybrid (no need to drops names, you all know who you are). ?
But anyway, no. The Switch is exactly what Nintendo intended all along, which is a Hybrid system, not a 3DS replacement. The Lite however is a 3DS replacement. But personally, I would have rather had a new DS model. I'm one of those folks who is still getting a lot of the 3DS because I'm more interested in it's utility software (which doesn't exist on the Switch) than it's games.
The Lite exists for two reasons: 1) The 3DS is on a decline now and Nintendo needs to fill that void with something before someone else does. 2) A Switch model priced at $199 with an already established quality library will sell... ALOT.
So I agree with you, it's going to sell like mad by moving into the price slot of the 3DS. But I won't be picking one up because it offers nothing that I don't already have.
.. well, maybe that D-Pad. Ha!
i wonder if they will go completely the other way: just a console that connects to a TV with more horsepower. but no dock, no screen etc...more just a normal console that can still play the same games.
it would make the switch, as a platform, quite diverse. almost PC like (desktops, laptops, devices like the GPDWin and so on).
as for the switch lite: that price....yeah this is going to sell quite well. get a pokemon bundle going for christmas and it should really shift some units. i was initially reading about it and thinking "that's a lot of cuts" but 199.99 is a nice number to be at.
the big issue is the confusion this may cause with some games that use the OG switches more unique features. i think in mario odyssey the tutorial mentions using motion controls to throw cappy for example...will that still work or are people going to be flicking their switch light and ending up confused?
other than that...and i will probably be in the minority here, but i think they should have made it a bit smaller. it looks like its the same size as a vita roughly which was a pretty big handheld. it's size reduction doesn't really make it any more portable than a normal switch.
or if they made it like the GBA_SP: that would have been cool.
Price is amazing. Seriously 200 is nothing when the original model is still selling at 325 years after release.
Just wish there was a purple model :P
(Oh, and it's a big bigger than the Vita even, screen is bigger as well.)
So Nintendo made a Vita? Sony had it so right. How'd it go all wrong?
Propriety memory cards for starters, developers also abandoned it. Wanted another Freedom Wars, oh well.
They went the other way from what i was expecting. I was expecting the current switch to get a price cut while a more powerful one takes its place. This is switch's true form perhaps. Portability is the best feature it honestly sux on the big screen.

By not including internal storage and continued using Proprietary Memory cards that were overpriced.
I like this. I was never interested in plugging it into my TV or detaching the controllers. It would be nice to play in bed at night. But the 5.5” 720p screen is concerning.
I will wait to see what the Pro model looks like. I hope they make its sleek like an iPhone
Nintendo is definitely not going to drop the current Switch model in fact I fully expect a Switch Pro, probably around September or October 2020 just before Microsoft’s and Sony’s next gen hardware hits. It’ll most likely be a hybrid as well.
@reavis86:
Possibly and good point but i still see them offering the option in the form of some overpriced accessory. Instead of releasing it outright though, nintendo will hold a Direct amd "claim" it was out of popular demand.
Cool... pretty much what we expected. Perfect for those that only want a pure handheld (but for people like me who have long fingers, the smaller size isn't good).
And looks like the upgraded Switch will be coming next year, as I expected (to coincide with Scarlett and PS5).
@Archangel3371: What's the point of that though? The rumors for the lite turned out to be true, so if we look at the rumours of the pro they say it's a minor upgrade. It won't even put a dent in the technology gap.
@XVision84: It’ll be a more powerful system that’ll give the Switch another 2 or 3 years until the Switch 2 or whatever Nintendo’s next gen system will be.
great price at 200$
will sell gangbusters this holiday.
still waiting for the pro model myself as i dont use it much in handheld mode

Yeah. I think so too. Basically a PS4 Pro type in-between.
It’s official now. Switch = Handheld.
It is NOT a console. It does not connect to the damn TV at all LMAO.
It does not compete with PS4/PS5/Xbone/XboxTwo.
Sheep are having meltdowns.
Why would it "not competing" with home consoles would cause Sheep to have meltdowns?

I already have a PS4 so this is good for me, I don't want the same games on both platforms, I expect Switch to offer me singular experiences and it couldn't be better. I'm really glad I have a Switch.

I know the idea of it, I just don't think a minor upgrade would accomplish that. What meaningful change in graphics would come out of a Switch pro? Even if they made it a 1080p screen undocked, that would be double the pixel count of their current 720p screen. Wouldn't that require a hell of a lot more than a minor upgrade?
I would never hook up a switch to my tv anyway so I'm not bothered. With Pokemon and fire emblem on the way it looks a good purchase.

No one is having a meltdown here, just you because it's gonna outsell your PS5
@Archangel3371: That's what I'm hoping for, that's just what all the rumours suggest. They're just rumours but they were spot on with the lite.
I'd definitely get a switch pro.
@ajstyles: It’s a good thing the Switch doesn’t compete with the Xbox One. That would be a bloodbath. The Switch has killed the Xbox in sales since release and could pass it LTD this year. That’s more worldwide sales in 4 fewer years... The Switch has also been killing the PS4 as of late and passed it LTD in Japan.
So you’re probably right. It’s best not to compare the Switch with the other consoles. That would be an automatic L for Xbox and PlayStation
It’s really smart. I don’t want one cuz I am very happy with my OG Switch but at $100 cheaper than OG this will increase the install base big time and that means more games for us. I had a strong feeling this would surface around the time Pokemon S&S came out so peeps who wanna still only play Pokemon on handheld can still so that. Also expect a Pokemon bundle with this badboy for $250 around the holidays. All in all...this product isn’t for me but this is a smart as hell business move for Nintendo.
Makes sense. Portability is the big thing with the switch. Playing on TV is just inferior to the xbox and ps4, unless you really want to play Nintendo games on the big screen.
The price point is enticing as it reminds me of the GameCube years back. Intersting enough, Nintendo will still support the aging 3DS with the Switch Lite.
Great for people who want to save money to finally play some Switch games, but my opinion, you're losing too much just to save a hundred bucks.
this is perfect for kids, to keep them off the TV.
the 3ds xl is 200 bucks, so you can now play switch games for the same price as 3ds. Not bad, not for me since ive got a normal switch, but this is even tempting to get for my gf because all she plays is stardew valley, tetris 99, and other indies anyway on the switch, might be worth getting this for her this Christmas
Unless it offers the option to switch saves back and forth between the OG one and the Lite, I don’t see myself getting one. That’s one thing I liked about having two Xbox Ones, with cloud saves being useable on both of them.
As for no TV mode, while it may be disappointing to some, I wouldn’t put it past people figuring out a way to get TV mode working anyway depending assuming it’s not an outright hardware limitation preventing it. A software limitation could be overcome by the right people.
