GOTY traditionally is awarded to the games with the most in-your-face Gears-esque meatheadedness.

However, for the people that enjoy depth of character, story, game world and a sense of wonder and intelligence, the traditionally over the top Idiocracy-inspired game simply doesn't cut it.

Enter SWTOR, the thinking man's GOTY

  1. Bioware Story x 8 classes
  2. Huge world
  3. Real life friends
  4. Star Wars
  5. Persistent game world
  6. Competitive PVP

Recent NDA leaks, which I will respectfully not link to, have confirmed the epicness of this game. Apparently the story/presentation rivals KOTOR and has ME2 style cutscenes. Could anything be more amazing game-wise? Doubtful.

As other gamers argue over this years iteration of a CoD-clone inspired MP experience, Bioware will be electrifying the PC game world with a new style. A better style. A GOTY style in the truest sense.

i have been following this game since it was announced, however at this point i am highly sceptical of the game, to me from leaked gameplay video it looks like WoW with a star wars skin, and the space combat is effectivly a rail shooter

Sotonian_Rebel

The gameplay is faster and more impactful than WoW. Space shooter ... meh; better than no space.

However, the experience of the game (especially with friends) will be unparalleled.

No. Also Demon's Souls got GOTY before, it isn't the "in your face gears-esque game". In fact, I'm sure Demon's Souls requires more thinking. Story MMOs will always fall into the same trap. I've played a ton of MMOs, and the way it goes, it may give you 20-30 hours of quality story telling, but MMOs are made to last months. Either the story bits will be between long boring bouts of grinding, or all the story will happen at the start and then you're just left with grind. Guild Wars 2 will be much better.

I want it also, its a highly story driven game by the sounds of it i think it is expected to be 7 sequels to KOTOR games which i like, i prefer playing a game than playing graphics anyway.

Basically if you like ME2 and KOTOR this game is the magic pasta sauce.

You would be crazy not to at -least- play it for the free month.

There never has been a game like SWTOR, at least in presentation, you will feel like you are IN a Star Wars movie.

GW2 also looks impressive, but Bioware + ME2 cutscenes + Star Wars is something unique.

It just won't work out the way people expect. With full voice acting on all NPCs, there is no way they can afford to have a ton of story quests.

Meh. Star Wars and MMOs: one things I hate with a passion and another that I haven't really been able to get into. Besides, if any game changes MMOs it'll be Guild Wars 2.

It looks bland, and besides Mass Effect, BioWare hasn't been particularly good lately. BioWare Austin has still to prove themselves.

Or, to go back to the concept of intelligent thinking - you would be crazy to waste money on something that will inevitably fail. I'm not going to purchase the gaem, only to be allowed to play for a month. That's assuming I even enjoy it. I would no doubt get more enjoyment out of another RPG that doesn't cost me more every passing month. So, with that: I enjoy my hobby, AND I don't pay a fortune for it. Now that's intelligent thinking. Good show....good show....

"The thinking man's GOTY"

I guess every other choice is retarded . Glad to know other people opinions are idiotic and wrong.

TrapJak

I'm not saying that.

Just that Gears-esque meathead games usually garner the attention, rather than a thinking man's game.

I wouldn't call an MMO a thinking man's game. When I think of a thinking man's game, I think X3 and Starcraft II and Civilization V.

Ugliest 'art' sty1e I've ever seen, terrible rigid animations... admitted wow clone, no.. if this is the thinking man's goty, then what's wow, the second coming of Christ? No reason to touch a re-skin of wow. Plenty of much better looking games coming out (and all of them are visually more appealing)

Imo, playing a MMO like a single-player will kill this game. I have yet to see someone who plays an MMO and cares a **** about the story. All the rest it looks like a WoW re-skin.

Most of the WoW players I know, are big time RPG fans, and they love the story. The reason so many don't give a ****, is people like me, who see quest text, turn it into a bullet point, and complete said quest, and return it. I've not played enough Warcraft to know the story behind WoW, and the only reason I don't care for WoW's story, is it's piss poor presentation.

Questing with a group of friends is no more fun than doing it alone, all it really is, is a race to max level, with how it's done in WoW. If anything, it's the only redeeming feature of the whole game, to give the player a proper story experience.

WoW has only a ~10% adoption rate, it is very rare for it to hold interest past lvl 10, this is all on the fact, the game starts at max level, not during leveling, and leveling takes a long time, and max level still means grinding your balls off just to compete.

That.

TOR looks so dull and boring compared to Guild Wars 2. Without the Star Wars name or world the game would be a joke.

But SWTOR already looks last gen. yes Guild wars 2 will look aged in 2 years time, but youve got to remember the game has been made to run on old pc's [same as Wow is, you could run that thing on a toaster] And SWTOR has issues to do with lag/framerate and it looks worse then most games that came out in 05

So MGS4 is meat-headed? And Demon's Souls, which requires incredible skill and patience? And I'm not a fan of MMOs, so there's no chance SWTOR will win anything from me, at least. A bad move by BW.

Game looks like a 5.5/10. It looks dull, rather slow combat, weird and stiff animations and they've gone the "This is a WoW clone but even more singleplayer"-route which feels like the complete opposite direction of what'd you'd want from a mmorpg. They could've made it a sandbox mmorpg and at least tried to revive the roleplaying part instead all we get more instanced dungeons and more instanced battlegrounds. No I just feel so disappointed, it could've been grand but all we get is a bad WoW clone. There is nothing wrong with WoW, if you like the kind of gameplay WoW offers then there's is no better than WoW out there but WoW clones are just no no.

Seriously, some big company should pick up Darkfall or something and turn it into an epic mmorpg.

Also not to nitpick but I couldn't help but to see that the damage text is yellow and the experience gain text is purple, just like WoW not even a change of color. But that's jut too much nitpicking I guess.

What you guys are failing to mention is Bioware.

KOTOR/ME1/ME2/DA:O all have mediocre combat at best, but are still top tier works of gaming art.

Your judgments are based on flashy A-A-A-Awesome, and not a total picture of scope and value.

Sure a linear corridor shooter that is single player can do interactive combat better than an MMO, but it lacks:

large world

epic moments in the persistency of the world

cohesive massive alternate reality

depth in classes and strategies

persistent pvp battles

etc.

TOR combat is actually better than the aforementioned; of which are considered the best games ever made.

So, if it didn't kill Bioware as a studio in their previous smaller scoped games, it probably won't kill them in their new mega-scope SWars game.

Scope and immersion trump combat for the thinking man.

Your judgment is based solely on the DA2 effect; now THAT actually failed.

5 85's before quitting (which was still, very much, early cata), 8 80's, 5 70's 3, 60's (at time of level cap). The presentation is just so bad, I couldn't be bothered to look for the story in it, at any time. The very few times the story was presented correctly (cata va'd quests...), I did think "hmm, yes, tell me more"

The WoW storyline is amazing.

The presentation is beyond abysmal. What a wasted opportunity.

Another reason TOR will advance the genre, which I consider to be the forefront of gaming basically. (MMO)

All games will be MMO in the future, for the most part.

To you maybe. If you don't like playing online then the marketplace will indeed look very bleak in the next few decades.

The next BF game will probably be an MMO...

Clue 1: 'Force Unleashed' - obviously going to be an awful game

Clue 2: developer, unknown [to me]

Counter-clue 1: Bioware

Counter-clue 2: KOTOR

I agree that SWars as a franchise has been damaged / burned out. But, and its a big butt, Bioware made Swars shine with KOTOR. ME1/2 in a similar sci-fi vein proves they get the genre.

The WoW storyline is amazing.

The presentation is beyond abysmal. What a wasted opportunity.

Another reason TOR will advance the genre, which I consider to be the forefront of gaming basically. (MMO)

All games will be MMO in the future, for the most part.

Then the future of gaming is a dead one.

To you maybe. If you don't like playing online then the marketplace will indeed look very bleak in the next few decades.

The next BF game will probably be an MMO...

There is a huge difference between online game and MMO. MMOs will never take over games because A)there's too many people that don't like them, and B)out of the huge amount of MMOs, only a handful can survive more than a year and still be a viable business venture.

[QUOTE="110million"]Guild Wars 2 will be much better. SkyWard20

Nope, sorry. I think you're wrong.

I don't really see how. GW is AAA, made in part by Diablo developers. Is the graphics the best thing you have to bash about it? Because no one plays MMOs for graphics, or FFXIV would be the greatest MMO ever.

Read up on Guild Wars 2 instead of assuming it will be like the first. TOR will fail if it thinks it can provide months of full voiced story quests. I gurantee this with every fibre of my being.

The more i see Old Republic the more i think i'm gonna give it a shot.

the only MMO i've ever tried was DC Universe Online on PS3, and i failed to get into it due to lack of communication with the community. I felt like i was always grinding on my own.. and that gets old very fast.

A strong narrative story with voiced characters of the Bioware style games. yeah.

Count me in.

I have never been bitten hard by the MMO bug before, this may just be it.

and i like the Star Wars universe.

Thats how genres evolve. Take what a game before you did and do it a little better. No different in MMOs. From ultima -> everquest -> WoW -> and now it looks like SWTOR is next.
