Sorry if old.

Found this in Kotaku.

Widely acclaimed when it released in 1999, System Shock 2's cinematic conclusion nonetheless disappointed Irrational Games creative chief Ken Levine. The reason: The video that was shot wasn't anything like what he had scripted.

"Due to miscommunications or differing ideas, a different cinematic video was created from the one that I originally scripted," Levine says in a behind-the-scenes story Irrational published on its Web site yesterday. "We didn't have much to work with. It was like when you look in the cupboard and you're trying to make soup, and you have a bag of salt and couple of pinto beans."

Levine says they bulled ahead anyway, having to rewrite parts of the game's story to fit with the video they'd been given. "We completely ran out of time and that cut scene wasn't the right ending for the game," he says.

System Shock 2 was developed by Irrational and Looking Glass Studios, which led to some tension during the project's creation. I'm wondering if this wasn't also a manifestation of that. The anecdote is one of several about the shooter's development, what could have been in the game, why it was left out, and how they arrived at the finished product. Like, for example, they considered a zero-gravity level, but the technology they had in 1998 would have made its development prohibitively time-consuming, especially for something that wasn't a core feature of the game.

Although the game is more than 10 years old, it is a ****c that some may wish to play, so, consider yourself spoiler alerted.

What Might Have Been [Irrational Games]

So do you prefer the ending of SS2??

I can't comment as I have never played this game.

I liked the game a lot. It has some backtracking but overall it was an instant classic for me. The ending was decent(though there was the part with the ship... you know what I'm talking about *points at other SS players*) and the way it evolved into a horror-shooting "hybrid" with rpg elements was great. Bioshock in comparison is nowhere near the level of System Shock, outstanding and thrilling etc.

I would recommend System Shock to all players. :D

Makes sense. Anyway classic game. Guess the same thing happened with Bioshock, ill thought out, downright poor ending, however difference is the last third of the game was a trainwreck.

Yeah, I'm replaying it at the moment (see sig,) and I've gotten to the last third. Having a hard time bringing myself to play it now :( It's a shame, as the story before that is great, and Rapture is one of the best settings in any game. On topic -really need to get SS2.

Yeah the ending was very underwhelming when you consider the finale's buildup. Awesome game though.

System Shock 2 was a masterpiece, and still holds up very well today.

The game in my opinion was perfect other than the up-side down Von Braun and the last level inside the meaty place (or whatever). After such amazing build-up, yeah the ending was a little tame, but you couldnt exactly expect Goggles to start quoting Shakespeare.

The game's crazy. When a camera spots you there isn't just a couple security bots like in Bioshock, but rather a whole bunch of crazies come after you until that timer runs out.

Kind of makes me question whether or not SS2 might have been Levine's fault as well...
