I would say the most influential games of the generation are:

  1. PUBG - best-selling premium game of the generation and established battle-royale genre
  2. Pokemon Go - most-played game of the generation and cultural phenomenon
  3. Fortnite - cultural phenomenon
  4. Breath of the World - revolutionized open-world gaming
  5. Monster Strike - highest-grossing game of the generation

PUBG is more influential than Fortnite for a number of reasons:

  1. It was PUBG that established the battle-royale game genre, not Fortnite. Battle royale games were already popular before Fortnite jumped on the bandwagon.
  2. Fortnite was inspired by PUBG in the first place. Without PUBG, there is no Fortnite Battle Royale.
  3. PUBG has a much larger global player base (400 million) than Fortnite (200 million). While Fortnite makes more money from its players, PUBG has more players overall.
  4. Fornite is largely irrelevant in Asia, where PUBG is far more popular. For example, PUBG is dominating Fortnite in China, PUBG is the biggest online game in India, etc.
  5. PUBG has helped popularize PC gaming in Japan. The country's PC player base has increased to 15 million PC gamers, part of which can be attributed to PUBG.

Still better than Xbone's exclusive list LMFAO!

the order 1886 regarded as one of the worst game ever.

Yeah almost as bad as Doom or the new Metro.

You know most PS4 exclusives have higher meta scores than doom and metro right? Also, RE2 remake is better by metacritic standards.

RE2 is multiplat. and its ok.

Half life 2 still has better metacritic score than PS4 exclusives. although i hate metacritic because they dont count youtubers. only professional paid critics who are corrupt.

Most of the influential games seem to have derived from the PC. Not big AAA games but smaller early access types evolving over time growing from youtube than the typical marketing campaigns of yore.

Which is great.

I like how two of these started life as Arma mods. Arma low-key most influential game of the gen?

Sure. It's a repeat of Team Fortress and Counterstrike and similar ilk back in the 90's. It's testament to the importance of user-created content, something many dev/pub still opt to ignore.

atleast CS and TF were good. PUBG might be influential but its one of the worst thing ever happened to gaming today.

i struggle to think how are people so addicted to that. that and fortnite.

Couldn't give a rats ass about battle royal, but if people enjoy em, more power to em.

Not liking something doesn't mean it's objectively bad.

Aside from racing games.

PUBG is bad. too many of my cousins and friends are addicted to it. and they are non gamers.

while I (ie me) as hardcore gamer tried PUBG for 10 minutes and realize its one of the worst game ever made. worst than COD and BF combine.

if in 2009 someone told me there will be a PC game that will be more popular than COD and will be invaded by casual gamers. i would laugh. but now it happened in a form of PUBG and fortine.

If people that are not gamers are addicted to a game and said game has non gamers and gamers fans, chances are that said game is actually good.

@knight-k: You know the thread is ‘most influential’, right? How are ps4 exclusives influential when they’re mostly rehashes of existing games? Bloodborn = Dark Souls, Horizon Dawn = Far Cry with mechs, Spider Man = less cartoony Sunset Overdrive, Uncharted 4 = other Uncharteds...and that’s all I can think of in terms of quality ps4 exclusives.

@ghosts4ever: I got the order for $10 and I really enjoyed it, however I would of been pretty angry if I paid full price because of the lack of content. Story and graphics was good for the time considering how small the team was.

God of War won many Goty's. Bloodborne is a souls game but maybe the best out of them all. And every game is a "rehash" of something else.

Looks you're just jealous no Xbone exclusive comes close to the quality of PS4's exclusives.

Definitely.

But Fortnight is more polished. PUBG was in first but PUBG cannot program nearly as well as Epic.

@sakaixx: Monster Strike is a mobile physics/RPG/puzzle/strategy game from ex-Capcom dev Yoshiki Okamoto (who created Street Fighter II and Final Fight). It's popular in Asia, but largely unknown in the West. Same goes for Arena of Valor and Fate/Grand Order (based on Fate/Stay Night), which are also mobile games popular in Asia but largely unknown in the West.

@jackamomo: Guys, Arma 2 is a last-gen game. It came out in 2009. So it doesn't count for this gen. But it was one of the most influential games from last-gen.

  1. No Man's Sky
  2. Red Dead Redemption 2
  3. Hollow Knight
  4. Astro Bot
  5. God of War

Then you have Dead Cells, DOOM16, The Witcher 3, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Life is Strange, Horizon Zero Dawn, Guacamelee, Detroit Become Human, etc, etc. It's pretty hard to do a top 5 after having played literally hundreds of amazing games!

1. Yakuza 0 - This game got me into the entire series and I have had a blast playing them all, It's a shame I didn't play them earlier.

2. GOW - I was in awe almost the entire time

3. Bloodborne - This game's combat was so good it made it hard to play other games for a while

4. Spider Man PS4 - I've never had more fun traversing a game world before, the swinging mechanics are amazing.

5. Dead Cells - It reignited my love for retro games, and metroidvania titles, I know it does't do anything groundbreaking unique, but damn every mechanic in this game is just so smooth, and I can tell a lot of love was put into the game.

Edit* Honorable mentions would be Mario Odyssey, Witcher 3, Yakuza 6, Ghost Recon Wild lands, Horizon Zero Dawn
