I would say the most influential games of the generation are:
- PUBG - best-selling premium game of the generation and established battle-royale genre
- Pokemon Go - most-played game of the generation and cultural phenomenon
- Fortnite - cultural phenomenon
- Breath of the World - revolutionized open-world gaming
- Monster Strike - highest-grossing game of the generation
PUBG is more influential than Fortnite for a number of reasons:
- It was PUBG that established the battle-royale game genre, not Fortnite. Battle royale games were already popular before Fortnite jumped on the bandwagon.
- Fortnite was inspired by PUBG in the first place. Without PUBG, there is no Fortnite Battle Royale.
- PUBG has a much larger global player base (400 million) than Fortnite (200 million). While Fortnite makes more money from its players, PUBG has more players overall.
- Fornite is largely irrelevant in Asia, where PUBG is far more popular. For example, PUBG is dominating Fortnite in China, PUBG is the biggest online game in India, etc.
- PUBG has helped popularize PC gaming in Japan. The country's PC player base has increased to 15 million PC gamers, part of which can be attributed to PUBG.
