The Dark Knight Rises was really great, however I think it's easily the worst of the three (but that's not a bad thing by any means). It lacked the cohesiveness of the other two films. There's a lot going on in TDKR and it felt like Chris Nolan had to condense all that he wanted to say in 2 hours and 45 minutes. As such the newer characters had less time to develop, whereas both Begins and TDK only had a few characters to develop and took their time with them.On top of that the editing was kind of jarring - It went from one character's event to another character's events.
I think if there's going to be an extended cut on blu/dvd release, it'll probably be better than what we saw in the theatres. Nolan went big with story in this one and I think that provided TDKR with more flaws than Batman Begins and TDK. However that being said, the scale, scope and epicness of TDKR was amazing. The film actually has a lot of amazing scenes within it, but like I said the way it was edited down hurt the final result a bit. I actually really how they portrayed Bane and the ending of the movie in my opinion was perfect.
I think the lack of it being my favourite might have to be with the tone of the movie too. Batman Begins and TDK felt like crime/drama movies, where as TDKR felt like a chaotic war film, which in all honesty was a nice change - but if it was delivered in a slightly better way in terms of characters, it'd probably be at the top of the three.
I still think 10 years down the line, The Dark Knight will be the stand out of the three films, simply because of how close to perfection it came and how everything just fell into place and worked together.
Still, with Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises - Nolan has created an awesome film trilogy .Although, not as good as The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Toy Story Trilogy as far as all three movies being on equal grounds. It's by far though the strongest comic book film trilogy.
